The german in the chorus translates into "not a battle, a rescue mission" which was the best description of this event, the 12th army's intent was to rescue civilians and not continue the battle and cause lives to be wasted for a battle that had all but been lost
@Iamthesun3142 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I first heard the song I was confused what they were there, besides the “nicht ein, ein” because I take German in school so I looked it up with Apple translate. It said “ not a battle, a bail” so I assumed the last part was right because I know that some German words are pretty long for English words that short.

Ah yes, a long waited video has arrived, thank you Dave! Walther did make it out if Berlin, lived till 1982, died in Austria in car accident. On 10 April 1945, Wenck was appointed commander of the German Twelft Army located to the west of Berlin to guard against the advancing American and British forces. But, as the Western Front moved eastwards and the Eastern Front moved westwards, the German armies making up both fronts backed towards each other. As a result, the area of control of Wenck's army to his rear and east of the Elbe River had become a vast refugee camp for Germans fleeing from approaching Soviet Army. Wenck took great pains to provide food and lodging for these refugees. At one stage, the Twelfth Army was estimated to be feeding more than a quarter of a million people every day. According to Antony Beevor, Wenck's eastward attack toward Berlin was aimed specifically at providing the population and garrison of Berlin with an escape route to areas occupied by U.S. forces: "Comrades, you've got to go in once more," Wenck said. "It's not about Berlin any more, it's not about the Reich any more." Their task was to save people from the fighting and the Russians. Wenck's leadership struck a powerful chord, even if the reactions varied between those who believed in a humanitarian operation and those keener to surrender to the Western allies instead of the Russians. According to Randall Hansen, Wenck's actions, with the help of luck and U.S. General William Simpson, successfully evacuated a large number of troops and civilians (variously estimated from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands), with Wenck himself being one of the last who crossed the river. I recommend you to check out the Sabaton - Wehrmacht next tbh. That song is about, as the title says, German army in ww2 and the men who fought in it. Very heavy and dark song. Also this is must react, one of the greatest performances EVER! Don't worry, it has subtitles. SABATON - En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg)

In case someone wants to know, the German passages are a tad incorrect. They're technically correct if you directly translate them into English ("Not a fight, a rescue mission"), but it's not grammatically correct German. Also, Kriegsglück can most accurately be translated as War's Luck, as in, there is no plan that can make this happen, we just have to hope for the best and be badass.

You know, a lot of people villainize all of Germany during WWII, but the truth is, they were just people. Ordinary, everyday people. There were only a few truly EVIL people, but they were all in charge. My grandmother was a german citizen during WWII. She actually turn 17 on D-Day. So hearing a song praising the actions of a german at the time, really brings me hope that at least SOME people can understand. FYI, she lived to her 90's, married an american nurse/doctor, moved over to the states, became a chemist and helped research for a cure for cancer. Just so you know.

That first Germans who escaped Berlin after siege was made, encountered soviets but siviet troops were so tired that they couldn't lift rifle. So no combat was born as tired soviet trrops let germans who possessed no danger to them go... Reprisals among soviet troops after this was found out was horrible.

About Wenck: Wenck was offered the rank of "Generalinspekteur der Bundeswehr" (Main-Inspector of the german army) after ww2 and supported the build up. But he demanded the rank "Oberkommandierender der Bundeswehr"(Grand-Commander of the german Army), so he will do the job. The goverment declined this offer, so Wenck declined the opportunity. I don’t think that he would’ve been put to death because Berlin was falling and in flames, hitler had already committed suicide or was going to shortly( I don’t really know) and the rest of the high command was probably evacuating or had other things to do. And, I’m pretty sure the Allies took most of the soldiers and civilians in( besides the ones that got killed because of the surrendering rules ( you know what I’m talking about if you watched the Sabaton history video). During the the war, there is a rule of you only can capture soldiers that fire on you or attack you. You cannot take people from the eastern front, and they used to run to the west because the soviets are fighting and going to get revenge for what they did on the eastern front, so they had a attack the us troops And then after firing on them they had a surrender to them Sad fact, most of the civilians I got rescued with the ninth italian and the eleventh army got sent back to berlin to be under soviet rule.
