"Monday, Monday" Dedicated to the One I Love" "Dream a Little Dream of Me" all good songs. The group was central to the California Sound of the late 60's that followed on the Beatles' success. btw,,,,, Mama Cass is the woman in the Monterey Pop performance you saw of Janis Joplin; she's the one sitting in the crowd with her mouth wide open in awe of Janis' singing.

The Mamas & Papas recorded a song from 1931 (Dream A Little Dream of Me), featuring Mama Cass (Elliot) on vocals. You ought to check that one out. It's probably the most beautiful interpretation of that song ever. The really great artists know the roots of their music, and look back for inspiration. The Mamas and the Papas were huge in the late 1960's. Part of the soundtrack of my adolescence.

Thanks for doing this song. I forgot to mention that it's "pretend" to pray not "began." That line gets misheard, too. Michelle Phillips, who co-wrote the song and specifically the second verse about the church, said they only went in to get out of the cold and pretended to pray for the preacher's sake who lit the coals for them. The band had been living on the beach in the Virgin Islands for a couple of months working on their sound (and doing enormous amounts of acid) when they flew back to NYC where it was snowing. Michelle, a California girl, had never seen the snow, so they walked around the city and froze. She begged the guys to move to California, and later that night her husband, John, the group's leader and principal songwriter, woke her up so she could help him with the song. And she gets a boat load of money in royalties every year.

The instrumental break that you liked so much features flute, similar to your favorite band, Jethro Tull. Other songs that feature flute include Up the Country by Canned Heat, Moondance by Van Morrison, Undun by The Guess Who, Color My World by Chicago, There Is a Mountain by Donovan, Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones, and Spill the Wine by Eric Burdon and War. The only one of these you've reacted to is Color My World. Maybe you could do a flute series. Other notable songs by The Mamas and the Papas include Monday, Monday; Words of Love; and Dedicated to the One I Love. Under her own name, Mama Cass recorded Dream a Little Dream of Me (an exquisite performance, in my opinion) and Make Your Own Kind of Music.

In 1970, Dunhill Records released "A Gathering of Flowers: The Anthology of The Mamas & The Papas." Inside the lid of the front of the box are the lyrics to all the songs, including "California Dreamin'." The record company, not google lyrics, not some random person posting the lyrics online, published the words. Here's the answer: pretend to pray and lights the coals. I just looked at it again to make sure. And someone sent Daniel the Anthology a few weeks ago. He can verify for himself if he's of a mind to do so (but unlike me, he has a life and can let this go).

This song perhaps seems a contender for Top 10 status in the musical category of Ubiquitous, as in past decades it was frequently used in commercial advertising and soundtracks for '60's documentaries involving hippies, Vietnam, etc.; a mainstay in the arena of easy listening and oldies radio. They were a fresh, contemporary west coast contribution to the established folk rock scene when they came out.

Like raspberry beret by prince, it’s a perfectly arranged and structured pop song coupled with an underpinning of standout talent, in this case of vocal harmonies. Lastly, though clearly a pop song, it has an artistic quality to it, that creates an edge couched in such well structured harmonies. In this case it’s the haunting element. There is a real melancholy element to it that sticks in your head but also bones. I hear the hope of the Kennedy sixties mixed with the coming danger of nam going off the rails and rioting and milk/rfk assasinations nearing.

This was written by John and Michelle Phillips based on an experience on a cold winter day in NYC. The record business was still primarily based in NYC, so they were stuck there for that reason. Michelle kept begging John to go to California to escape the cold. As they were walking down a New York street, they ducked into a church to escape the cold wind. A priest walked through, and they pretended to pray so he wouldn't kick them out.

It was probably in a ton of movies. John seemed to have a limited number of great songs in him, but the best are truly superb. But their albums are full of filler. Some classic tunes, but he ran out of memorable songs rather quickly. Wonderful vocal blend. Mama Cass had a special voice. She wouldn't have made it in the MTV crowd. We became too focused on the visual rather than the actual music.

What you said at the end reminded me of how Simon Cowell, on American Idol, had said to Jennifer Hudson that she didn't have the look of a popstar... Then she went on to win a friggin' Academy Award in a Musical! ;-]

John Phillips, the tall guy on guitar, was the group leader, very particular on the vocal harmonies. Had a very specific sound he was going for and wouldn't let a song go till they had it like he wanted. Back in those days most songs very driven by the vocals. This has lessened over time IMHO. It might sound familiar because it's a common musical motif ala Greensleeves.

I do like this genre. Of course I was just 13 when this song hit the charts. However, I really wish you can react to The Association, Along Comes Mary (Studio version is so much better than live performance.) They were a great group with other hits Windy, Cherish, and Never My Love.

I stopped making requests at some point in September, Daniel, I thought you were getting overwhelmed, and I think that is still the case. But The Mamas And The Papas were in my next set of requests. George, Me too on the request point. Decided to just see it unfold rather than add to an already high pile of "to do's". These comments had me go back and listen to Dancing Bear again. Far to long for that and others by them... As you said short but impactful body of work. All the best.

@@daveking9393 Thanks, Dave, I have around 20 or so groups that have not been explored, but will kindly ask Daniel in time. First time I heard this song, it was because a friend of mine's older brother was very much involved in the anti-Vietnam protests going on at the time, and he had the Barry McGuire album on which he'd done "California Dreamin';" the first to record it, as it happened. Singing back-up on it were....the Mamas and Papas. A few weeks later, I heard the Mamas and Papas version on the radio. Very definite differences, most notably the harmonica solo vs. the flute solo. I've never heard that the lyrics might have been "...preacher lights the coals," and certainly don't hear that on either version...the lyrics *were* "...I pretend to pray," however, and NOT "...began to pray." Whole point of that was getting out of the cold, so one would pretend to be praying, so you wouldn't get asked to leave...Another very good reaction...really enjoy hearing a fresh perspective on old, familiar songs!

This is an interesting group. They put themselves together after breaking off from other bands, went into a new genre, argued about that, had some issues with booze and drugs, argued about that, had affairs, argued about that, and then tried for solo careers which didn't take off. I wish they had been able to work things out, because their sound is unique and had a strong impact on the era even though they were only together for a few years. When I was a kid they used to show up quite often on a variety show, at a halftime or even a parade. They got into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1998.

Way back when this song dominated the airwaves, thank God we didn’t have lyric-sheets to ponder. Pop songs were well written, well performed, and beautifully produced. Iconic ones like this example created uniquely-original worlds of their own, allowing the listener to form their own individual interpretations. Of all the elements involved in producing a record like “California Dreaming”- writing melodies, chords, arranging, choosing and recording/mixing instruments and vocals- no doubt the actual writing of lyrics involved the least time and effort but nowadays often gets the MOST by reviewers, how ironic!

Very famous song. I got annoyed from hearing it so much at one point like 9 years or so ago, and it kind of left my personal rotation at that point. Part of it was I watched a movie in college called "Chungking Express," which is a Hong Kong film in which one of the characters is obsessed with this song and plays it so many times in the movie. It was enough for me.
