I've listened to both these songs since they came out . and I can't decide which is the best. There so real. And harsh. I even ended up in London myself at 18 for a couple of years. When you start out with -20 while others start out at +30 you can never catch up

The old main drag is a song about the flotsam and jetsam ‘rent boys selling their bodies just to make money’ to stay alive. No one writes songs better than Shane

Lou edges the Pogues here, with his reprise of the infamous Walk on the Wild Side It is impossible to overstate his contribution to the ROCK CANON.,.. ESPECIALLY WITH THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.He influenced Bowie,Waits and a number of New Wave artists such as Tom Verlaine and Patty Smith.

The Pogues started out as Pogue Mahone which is the Anglicicaisation of pog mo throin which means " kiss my arse. Lol. Both songs are sad for me but good. I'll have to listen to them a few times more in order to decide which is better for my ear. 😊 🎶

Lou broke the door open for literature of the marginalized and even honesty about homosexuality he was fearless. And American rock’nroll content was directly affected by it even if it would be years later. And the same time the Irish and Scotts were treated like lower class people. So you know they had those feelings and folk music played into that undoubtedly Shane heard that. The American tours of New York Dolls and Ramones were massively influential. And Westwoods’ bi-sexual theatrical bondage clothing clashing with Bowie’s and Iggy’s collaborations in ‘76 and on. And even by the Anarchy tour in ‘77 any and all sexual proclivities went on in the Roxy. Even with Shane’s Nipple Erector band I have the feeling without the Velvet Underground none of these songs make it mainstream. Especially after reading Skagboys, even tho they are dancing to Northern Soul they are still listening to Bowie, Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop. All that nihilistic and marginalized brilliance. Also Tuinol gives away the time frame, as far as I know that shit was long gone by 1985. Those pills were cheap and readily available in the late 70’s but very soon gone like ‘ludes. Dirty Blvd is from the end of that time period in the early 80’s with Puerto Rican gangs in New York having a big cut of that pill trade. It’s a great comparison in terms of time frame. I know both songs by heart, 2 of my favorites, so I don’t need to watch the hype of a versus comparison. If some younger people could get into those songs I encourage them to watch it.

Bowie and Iggy’s collaborations were a little earlier than 1976 more like 1973, Bowie had a drag queen minder on him, Leee Black Childers in those post Raw Power drug days, would also be recruited to handle the Heartbreakers for a year in London 77-78. Lee bought his share of rent boys I’m sure if he could get them for free at the Roxy! RIP Leee!

As much of a Rogues fanatic as I am, I think Lou just shaves it here with a more fully developed depiction of life at the wrong end of town. Oh, and if you like the guitar on this track, then check out the rest of the album, as it is a real guitar player's record, with Lou writing virtually everything for electric, along with able support from , if my memory serves, Robert 'Bob Quine.

I love Lou Reed more than life, he's my absolute favourite musician ever but... I love Shane too and Shane wins this one- maybe his best song whereas Dirty Boulevard probably wouldn't make Lou's Top 30

Easy call. Dirty Blvd is one of my favorite Lou Reed songs. I'm not really a Pogues guy. Lou is more my style, his poetry always works for me.
