I had the enormous pleasure to meet Shane at a small gig in London ages ago. He was the total opposite when you met him in person. He was kind , very down to earth and his sensitivity transpired. Thanks for the beer and the song Shane, I'll never forget that, and above all thanks for the music!!!! . The world has lost not only a great musician a fantastic lyricist and a poet but a wonderful human being too. RIP kind soul. ☘️😥

A bit but not totally wasted..He knew what he was doing and could hold a conversation. In fact, he asked me quite a few questions. First thing he did is invite me for a beer though 😂. . He was, without any doubt, quite clever, very humble, down to earth and very genuine and, amazingly, quite shy too. I am totally sure he talked to me because I didn't behave as a fan.. I am spanish, had only been living in the UK for a couple of years then.and Ididn't have a clue he was so famous in the UK but I remember well I thought he was special. There was something unique, about him... a special kind of sensitivity... . Top bloke indeed!!! Top bloke!

I compare this concert to the 1985 show in Munich... the degradation in Shane is huge in just six short years. Very sad, but was also fortunate to see them in Chicago after he'd put it back together a bit. Rest on easy, poet. There will never be another one like you.

Alcolism doesn't take that long to destroy you at the age he was at, he's not in his early twenties and also he's on loads of heroin and loads of downers from doctors and suffering from mental health. It's disgusting he was put on stage to be a freak show

Did anyone else pull this up after reading James' book "Here Comes Everybody"? The last pages talk about this very show. They had already informed Shane that he was gone. And they were all essentially mourning him from the stage. And you could see how bad he had gotten. Especially on "Sally MacLennane".

The band thought they were better of without him, but realized they robbed the band of their sole. It is amazing Shane had although he was in this state had some moderate succes with The Popes, while The Pogues had to dissolve themselves. I am very glad though they found their way to each other after a long time and they performed once again with their old numbers for more than 10 years.

All these comments about Shane and the band being pissed @him. Yes he was let go from the band but you know they loved him as a brother. Speaking from experience its hard as hell to watch your brother kill himself slowly in front of the world. Maybe they were using tough love on top if being angry. If you read Shane's account you'll see there are two sides to the story of their/his downfall, with neither side particularly in the right or the wrong. Two-bit celebrities like Bob Dylan, Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Depp and Bono spent many years basically praising MacGowan to the skies and basically not lifting a white-gloved finger to help MacGowan get into REHAB. The band was put in a position of being betrayed by his off-stage antics and had no choice but to fire the guy, but next time you see hilarious brown-nosings of various celebrities blowing smoke up MacGowan's arse, just remember that it was only O'Connor who attempted to help him, and in the end it turned out to be more or a less a garbage publicity stunt.

In Shane's defense, he probably could have hung in there a little better if Andrew Ranken (the drummer) wasn't in the mood to go so fast. That being said, firing him was most likely the right decision.

I feel like his slurring was real bad there, and all the members kind of turn their attention towards it realizing Shane was too wrecked. He quickly got it back together a few moments later.
