Van Halen wasn’t glam - they were a PARTY band with the greatest guitarist on the planet defining their sound. I consider them the hard rock bridge that connected the 70s sound to the 80s sound. Hair bands in the 80s took the sound of Van Halen and mixed it up with the look of Queen and KISS.

I don't know if I'd call this glam metal, but VH definitely defined the L.A. Sunset Strip scene in the late 70's. One could argue that the glam-rock, hair band scene of the 80's was everyone else trying to be the next VH. Or more correctly, VH was trying to be the next Led Zeppelin, Motley Crue was trying to be the next Van Halen, and everyone else was trying to be the next Motley Crue.

Let me tell you, growing up in the 80's was a blast. Saw them many times. They were high energy and full of life. Eddie was so magical and a pure genius on the guitar. Or pretty much anything he played. It doesn't seem right that he's gone. If you haven't checked out Right now or Poundcake. You need to, it's so of Eddie's best work. His piano work is brilliant on Right now and the riff in Poundcake is unreal. RIP Eddie

Van Halen heavily influenced what came to be called glam metal but they were ahead of those other bands timeline-wise and in their development. Kind of in a category of their own. Hard rock's not a bad term for them.

Every video I’ve seen of the group, Eddie is always goofing around. It doesn’t help that his face is also naturally goofy 🤪 . 80’s rock bands had a lot of humour in their videos, it was a fun time to be alive.

Love it! VH was a top tier fave of mine in the 80s FOR SURE! I did an oral report in English on them, I recall my teacher being pissed, (all my teachers got sick of me turning everything into my music obsession lol) but I still got an A, when she saw I was serious AF with my presentation & knowledge lol Next up: try & LOVE "Hot for Teacher", grrreat tune, & the video is a riot!!♥️✌

One of the VH signatures was that slow down section mid song. Never really thought about that until recently but they have a lot of songs were they utilize that. Aint talking Bout Love is a good example. They obviously learned that from there early days

DLR was super inspired by wrestlers. Going so far as to be one of the first guys to incorporate wrestling pants as a part of his “look” during the 70’s and 80’s. He said he was looking for comfort flexibility and bright colors as an alternative to the hot non stretchy leather pants he wore previously.

Sweet is considered by most to have revolutionized the "Glam Rock/Punk" back in the 1970's and have many huge hits such as "Ballroom Blitz", "Fox on the Run", "Love is like Oxygen" and "The Six Teens". They had a great band that could have and would have done a lot of interesting things if they were given the chance but the studio prevented them from following their dreams to include grunge music YEARs before it was a thing.

AWESOME tune! I've never really placed Van Halen in the 'glam metal' genre - more just hard rock. I defer to groups like Twisted Sister (a personal fave - and one you should definitely check out! Stay Hungry, The Price, I Wanna Rock, Don't Let Me Down for starters), Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant - as prime examples of glam metal. Van Halen were generally about fun - at least in the David Lee Roth years. They got a little more serious with Sammy Hagar on vocals (subject matter changed, but still rocked!) Highly recommend checking out Unchained, Ain't Talkin' Bout Love, And The Cradle Will Rock, Hot For Teacher for your next Roth era tracks. I especially want to mention a very unique track in the VH catalogue, more of a synth piece (Eddie VH was getting more into keys in the 80's), from the same album as Panama, called I'll Wait. It's an absolute banger! Great reaction - can never go wrong with VH!!

VH was never ever EVER anything close to glam. Kickass hard rock from beginning to end. For the epitome of glam, I'd say Poison. But, T-Rex in the 70s is hard to beat.

sounds like you are a huge fan of amazing guitar solos and you have to catch live performances were very few people improvised like Eddie Van Halen and transformed the song into an incredible solo just with your playing skills and genius. I’d Love to see your reaction to those so all send some recommendations. I guarantee you’ll be blown away and have a new appreciation of why Eddie is so revered by fans and guitar players

Biggest Glam Rock/metal bands…Van Halen, Def Leppard, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Poison, Whitesnake, Motley Crue IMO. Keep in mind…just as Punk was a reaction against prog rock line Yes and the huge bands of the 70’s like Zeppelin, Floyd etc , so grunge was a reaction against glam rock. It all comes in waves as the pendulum swings back and forth.

GLAM METAL = New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks, Poison 🤘 also, if you want to see a fun VH show watch the '83 US Festival. The complete show is on YT and yes they are drunk off their ass but what a show 👏

I think they were more the hard rock, party band, in a similar way to AC/DC. Glam metal was a mixture of glam rock and heavy metal from the '70s, more like KISS. And Motley Crue in the '80s. But both AC/DC and VH also inspired the glam metal bands. :)

Wouldn’t call VH Glam but, they were one of the most influential bands for Glam Metal along with Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, and Kiss. Def Leppard, who was also very influential, isn’t really Glam either… they were part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) along bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, and Venom though, that scene is pretty extensive and a topic for another day. If you do want to check out some glam bands Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, and Dokken were among the best known bands.

Van Halen always put on a show. Dave was more Glam than any of them, I'd call them hard rock or even party rock. Motley Crue was probably most epic of glam, and Poison was pretty much the epitome of Glam.

Van Halen was a rock and roll band. No self-respecting heavy metal band would sing "Bop-bada-shooby-do-wah" like they did in I'm The One. And they definitely wouldn't record a song like Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now.

For me, Van Halen was not a glam rock band. David Lee Roth was arguably a glam front man, but the band, especially Eddie, was not. IMO, glam rock bands included Poison, Ratt, and Warrant.

Except for David Lee Roth, VH was barely even a hair band and definitely not glam rock. When you see a glam rock band on your tour of the 80s you’ll go “ahhh-THAT’s glam rock!” (ie. Twisted Sister, Nelson, etc.). To get more perspective on VH you need to watch Eddie’s “Eruption” guitar solo. Bring diapers. 😊
