“Come on Concept Kings! What have you got for me!?” : plays space vampire music video

There're many kpop groups who do neat concepts thru their MVs along with fashion too. However, what makes VIXX especially called "concept kings" is that once they decide a theme, they make everything the theme-centered. You see some groups make MVs that tells the story of their song, but you don't see groups that make all elements of a group comeback (the song, MV, fashion, and choreography) altogether unified by the theme. But VIXX purposely have been doing that since On & On. For the song Shangri-La (도원경), they wrote the song only in Korean to fit the Korean traditional concept (There is no English word in the lyrics) and it is written very much like Korean old poem style which you can hardly see in kpop nowadays. And the instrument that is used in the intro is Gayageum (Korean traditional musical instrument). 桃源境 (the Chinese letters of the title) each means peach tree, endless water (stream), and horizon. That together means utopia. That are all seen in the MV as well. There're definitely reasons why people called only VIXX, concept kings.

Fun Fact/s about On & On: - VIXX consider it their debut track. Any mention of the releases before it, "Superhero" or "Rock UR Body" and they'll be like "Nope, not us. Sorry. Don't know those songs. Never heard of 'em." It's hilarious how much they hate those songs, lol. They were the first idol group from their company and Jelpi didn't really know what to do with them, so (according to the members) those two songs were "trial-and-error". Finally, Hyuk was like "How about we do space vampires?" and they were like "WELL WHY NOT" and it was a hit. - They are the first idols to wear SFX-contacts on TV. They actually had to negotiate with the station to let them each wear ONE contact, and then when the station decided it wasn't as much as they thought it'd be, they were eventually allowed to wear two. - They did, however, scare the living daylights out of other idols. A female idol apparently turned around and screamed when she saw Hongbin(?) and actually raised her hand to slap him, haha! (Look up VIXX Lost Fantasia 6 Years with Starlight, Love4VIXX has it subbed, it talks a lot about their journey and it's only 11 minutes long.)

First of all, thank you for reacting to more Vixx!! Second of all, MODESTY TUB LMAO. I also wanted to give you some more background info on these MVs! For Shangri-la, you're absolutely right in that their sets are much simpler here than for some of the others, but because they're Vixx, even they have deeper meaning! Shangri-La is actually a concept from Asian folklore. It’s a mystical, exotic utopia isolated from the outside world. As a “lost paradise,” some say that it’s a real place that can no longer be accessed or found, or that it's located in another world or that it is actually a place of the imagination/state of tranquil consciousness to be attained through inner exploration. You can see such imagery and symbolism expressed in the MV (e.g. the cut out windows, the two worlds separate and then eclipsed, the blooming plunge inside the "modesty tub" HAH). The lyrics also reflect aspects of this when applied to love as a state of utopia that they’re trying to reach, and the MV gives off a similar yearning, dream-like quality. And back to the set design, shangri-la is said to be a paradise of nature and vibrant beauty, so the aesthetics and colors used here actually tie in with each member’s birthstones/birth flowers. I think the deer and peach were also used as symbols of longevity in ancient oriental culture. Hope this helps! Also, I love that you always react to MVs from completely different Vixx periods lol. They actually started out with a bright pop art concept (Super Hero/Rock Your Body) to try and stand out from the mass of grunge/edgy debuts in 2012. Which didn't really work out for them, unfortunately. A lot of the Vixx members actually regard On & On as their "true" debut because it's what finally got them some notice! They really pushed boundaries with that one since back then, crazy hair colors/contacts/eye makeup weren't really done. They even received backlash because many people thought it was weird and creepy, but this is the beginning of Vixx starting to get more creative license, and it was baby Hyuk who came up with the freaking vampire concept idea to go along with his Twilight phase haha, except, you know, intergalactic because why not. And then in an ironic twist of fate they actually found their niche as the kings of dark concepts in the following years, (Hyde/Voodoo Doll-where they finally got their first win, then Error/Eternity), and then eventually progressed to being acknowledged as concept kings/concept-dols in general! And that's when they began to push again, this time with more abstract rather than plot-based MVs (Chained Up, Shangri-la, etc). For Eternity, I think you got the gist of what was happening since that was more plot-based, but I would love to see a dance practice! There are two lifts done at the very beginning that you don't get great angles of in the MV, but they're pretty cool. Voodoo Doll and Shangri-la are also great dance practices to watch!

The choreo on Shangri-La is so cool! Especially when you hear the fans all at once being opened in sync. Such a pleasing sound. Error - Errored dance opening is sick! Then its just them goofing around lol.

The opening is called Steel Heart. There are live stages with Steel Heart opening added in too. You (Kaia) should try that out if you want just the actual choreo for the whole thing. ie without the goofing around lol.

fun little easter egg: the clock in eternity stops at 6:20 (you can see it turning in the mv, and then towards the end and also at the end it shows). now you might be wondering, why is 6:20 an easter egg? well... VI is 6, and XX is 20.... guess what that is :D

You should check out their song G.R.8.U!! They recorded the song backwards. So basically they had to learn how to sing their song backwards to make it look like it’s going forward in the mv! It is a highly under-appreciated music video👌🏻

I am so glad you are giving vixx so much attention. Choreo wise hyde, voodoo doll, eternity and error are top tier in terms of choreo dictating the song. I am usually dense about catching clues and hidden meanings in choreos but never with vixx because they dive into the theme and concept so deep that its impossible to miss all the references and details. Especially hyde which is a song about having split personalities has such a perfectly matching choreo that I still get excited watching it and catching all the little details. I'll be looking forward to your dance practice reactions now :D BTW now that you have seen on & on, can you please react to a.c.e's cover of it? they are huge vixx fanboys (chan especially) so they went all out for it and it was AMAZING!!!!

on and on concept was their first dark concept and it bring them to name "concept kings" because everyone just shocked when they saw those contacts and eye make up. There is a story says, they were going to a tv show with full costume on them and their car was broken so they had to use subway. The people on subway were shock and the other day news came out with the title of "vampire idols on subway". About Eternity, thats one of the most complicated concept for me :D But definitely one of my fav because of those vocals and Ravi's perfect rap part. fyi the girl in eternity mv is the leader of gugudan, vixx's sister group. They're under the same company and all of their songs are really good so please react to their songs because they're so underrated. Their vocals are really amazing, trust me you'll love them after you watch their the boots acapella video. 3 of the members were in produce 101 and 2 of them got into ioi. The concept of Shangri-La is a kind of god. The background is where peach flowers are in full bloom. Peach flowers do not appear in the music video, which is the paradox of the song toward the woman in the dream. The costume is 'Hanbok', a traditional Korean costume. I've modernized it with good dance skills. The costumes shown during the opening ceremony of the 2018 IOC show the Hanbok better.I'm worried if my words will be delivered well using a translator. And there are many better songs by VIXX such as 'desperate' and 'love me do'. I recommend cross-editing videos because he is a famous singer for his facial expressions on stage. If you search 'cross-edit' in Korean, there are more videos.
