He was one of the best and brightest political satirists and cabaret artists in Germany. He has withdrawn into private life for several years now. The interesting thing is that what he said many years ago has lost none of its relevance today.

Which was also the main reason he withdrew in the first place. He claimed that nothing he did changed anything and grew tired of it. Understandable, if you're day job for 20 years is to point out everything that's going wrong in your country on the big stage, only to see the people applauding you the night before vote for the same politicians responsible for the horrible status quo the morning after.

Volker Pispers said that he retired because he kept saying basically the same stuff for decades, people laugh, but nothing changes. I can understand that he is just demotivated to keep going. Sure he makes money, but I think he's in it to make a difference more than anything.

Look out for some material from German cabaretist Urban Priol with English translation. He is a similar caliber as Volker Pispers. He was a member of the "Anstalt" satire TV show. Don't know what he does now.

Pispers was the most honest thoug and had no problem to call out the system. Others did, too, but they almost always still went with the system and for example either didn't speak at all about the "Left" or badly, so they mainly helped the system by joking about it = making it feel less serious and by that acceptable, while spitting on the actual alternatives. Even the new Anstalt started better, but meanwhile still went back to that, likely because they were threatened to lose the show. Worst kind of satire is the one that spread system propaganda. What includes "yeah, sure, they are all criminals, but it's the best we got." Pispers meanwhile spoke openly about that - but a single man got no chance against the level of stupidity of 'us germans' and the masses of manipulators.

Volker Pispers was a master of dialectic thinking detecting contradictions in principle of political systems. As a Marxist, he knew that the bourgeois state acts as an ideal overall capitalist, but ideologically disguises the true interests of their protagonists.. He publicly deconstructed these ideologies and debunked their platitudinous character. No other political cabaret artist has ever reached his intellectual class. It was always funny that he took off the masks of the protagonists of power, because he couldn't defeat them, but at least he could expose them to ridicule.

Volker Pispers had nothing to do with comedy, he made tough political satire and cabaret and he first held the mirror up to the audience and then hit the audience with this mirror so that the laughter often got stuck in their throats and his content was fact-based.

Some jokes did not age too well. For example we know nowadays that invading Crimea was preparation for a larger attack on Ukraine. But about the directness: I grew up with his shows and to me that’s normal. What I like more with shows these days is that many provide sources in their videos. When watching Pispers, you had to trust him (or fact check afterwards and find out that he’s usually right). With all the people spreading unsourced claims these days, I wish Pispers had already provided sources.

"Die Anstalt" still produces content regulary and is highly critically against our goverment and world affairs. He shouldn't have gone too far with the satire. Crimea was an extremely bad example. As funny as it may seem.. in this context, it was an attack by one state on another which he, like the politicians of most countries, simply ignored! Since when can you vote on something in a FOREIGN COUNTRY? If you try to reconcile the criticism with the arguments, you have to say that it wasn't better than some of the comparisons in the "Bild-Zeitung", at least not in some comparisons.

I looked a lot into background info afterwards and that cleared up a lot I had not seen before. My main mistake was: I thought Putin would never do something which obviously would hurt most people in Russia. Since then I’ve been gradually understanding more and more how much ideologies shape actions even when they hurt all parties involved and especially the parts of the population that do not get to decide.

If you really like him, you might want to watch one of Hagen Rether's subtitled ones, I really can recommend "Hagen Rether on Islam" or better yet "Hagen Rether - Nothing changes [eng. subtitles]"; that's peak German political cabaret. 😅 He shines a light on our every little prejudice and double-standard; and then lights it on fire. Besides Jan Böhmermann he's one of the founders of the "true German" - movement. A true German isn't someone who likes to hurt others, wants to separate and kick out people considered non-German. The true German is helpful, friendly and welcoming to everyone. The true German knows that mixing cultures will lead to the most amazing and surprising results, whereas trying to keep your culture "untainted" leads to elitism, boring traditions nobody even knows the reason for their existence and seclusion.

He decided to quit to some degree, because neonazis started to pull his videos out of context. His shows were always for the audience he spoke to - that’s why he really dug into hypocrisy among the left and the green: to make them think and reflect. Neonazis who watch parts of his shows do not get that thinking from that, only reproduction of their own hate. The shows of Pispers do not work without their context, without being watched by the people he knew would be in the audience, so the context collapse we have in social media these days destroys them. They would not work as intended on youtube.

Let me tell u about the Norwegian teachers during the Nazi occupation, who resisted introducing Nazi uniforms and propaganda at their schools. 10% of teachers in the land were either shot on the spot or deported into concentration camps, often never to be seen again. But they held out, resisted, and achieved a small but important victory against the occupational government. Those people are heroes. And they are heroes, because they were principled, because they were not rolling over for the Nazis, and because they recognized that education is inherently political, and fought for their children to not put under the brain washing Nazi lies and propaganda. Being "neutral" here probably would have been yielding to the Nazi oppression. Thats NOT what teachers "should".

Since when do teachers have to have a neutral standpoint? I'd prefer it if my history teacher, teaching me about WW2, does *not* have a neutral standpoint, but a strong and grounded urge to teach about the barbaric cruelties of the Nazi regime.
