really you couldn´t? this episode restarted the flame war over tobis identity if you remember. you know several guys in the community were not convinced tob iis madara, but had to keep quiet, due to tobis power and him naming himself madara, but that scene got all the doubters back in one trail. i admit i wasn´t 100% certain, but it could only be two persons that would startle "madara" actually one would startle the fake if it was a fake SPOILER (just to make sure curtis doesn´t read it) and one could startle the real madara. either the man himself or his younger brother who was said to be equal to him in skill. if we assumed what "madara" said was true and he was just a shadow of his former self, than his younger brother would be a force he could not counteract. and ofc if it was the man himself, the whole madara show would be over

Yeah, it always seemed pretty obvious to me, especially in the original Japanese. When Tobi started calling himself Madara he always did it in this weird third person way, like he was putting on a show and trying extra hard to convince people, rather than just speaking naturally. And all through the encounter, Kabuto is toying with him, "Tobi -- oh wait, you're calling yourself Madara now," "don't underestimate my intel network", "don't worry, I haven't told anyone about this," etc.
