Totally unique and an absolute classic track. OMD are still going strong, still touring and producing new material, their last two albums both received critical acclaim and saw decent chart placing. They have a rich and varied back catalogue, well worth a deep dive, per some other other comments posted in this thread.

Thanks Shawn , great info as usual. This album has everything, experimental electronic soundscapes , like the title track, catchy synth pop and a couple tunes that wouldn’t be out of place on a Joy Division lp. The next album , Dazzle Ships is similar, perhaps even more experimental. After that didn’t sell well they started going in a more pop direction. The results tunes like If You Leave and So in Love.

Not heard this for a long time and forgot they did two songs about Joan d'Arc! OMD are another band I only really know through their singles (more of a guitar guy!) I really like the early hits, 'Messages', 'Electricity' and of course 'Enola Gay' which was massive in the UK. Cheers for another great reaction.

OMD has a whole string of excellent singles and this is up there as one of the best. It took me a little while to warm up to synth pop, especially the very electronic sounds of OMD and New Order, but I'm becoming more and more a fan of the genre. At least in its 80s incarnation. This song is a good example of why - however much they may rely on electronic noodling and drum machines (I'm actually unclear if this is a drum machine), the vocals are still 100% human and super, super hooky. Plus, yeah, that march-time rhythm that goes so well with the subject of the song is just ace.

Not sure if this is a drum machine or not, but they play actual drums on almost all of their songs live 🙂

OMD was my favorite of that era, especially of those bands who cite Kraftwerk as a major influence, they still put on a great live show. The first 4 albums are all excellent and the next several are good though spoiled by the commercial hits, to my taste.

Epic quality to the sound, reminiscent of Kate Bush Hounds of Love, Running up that Hill and Cloudbusting from around the same time. For me, Electricity, Messages and Enola Gay, their early singles, were era defining songs, drawing on the influence of Kraftwerk and making perfect electronic pop singles. The OMD singles collection would deffo be in my Top5, along with such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, Joy Division/New Order, The Smiths, Human League might sneak in there. Music that makes you glad to be human.

In fact I recommend you listen and review the song Louise by Human League, released in 1984. A beautiful and touching little vignette about love lost and possibly refound. Was later covered by Robbie Williams, of all people, in 2006, which really pushed him up in my estimation.

Their song "Joan of Arc" is, imo, better. "Maid of Orleans" is still a good song. Actually, OMD is technically the first band I saw live as they opened for Depeche Mode in 1988. Their songs are borderline cheesy they are so poppy, but they are a staple of 80s new wave for sure. Electricity Souvenir Talking Loud and Clear So in Love Forever Live and Die Secret I covered "Joan of Arc", "Souvenir", and "Secret" in my youth. Great band.
