It’s wild how mature this film is. I definitely didn’t recognize the mature themes of Bob’s midlife crisis and the irony of him being incredibly powerful yet feeling entirely powerless. It’s so strange that when I first saw it how much I felt like the kids and related to their struggles- now I see the scene on the plane and I literally almost cry listening to Mrs Incredible beg for her children and Mr Incredible break believing in their death.

Early 2000s was just a reaction to computers and technology, that used to be something just for geeks, taking over and becoming the "cool thing". All of a sudden superheroes weren't just for geeks, MCU was mainstream. Fantasy and magic wasn't just for dorks, Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter and then Game of Thrones made fantasy mainstream. So it become this golden era where the nerds and geeks were actually cool. All of a sudden even the jocks played games, and watched avengers, and game of thrones and so on. Even anime, with DBZ and cartoons all of a sudden everyone knew anime too. Kids these days don't know how it used to be shunned upon and you'd be watching this stuff alone and made fun of for liking it lol.

Interesting thing about each of the characters in the Parr Family is that each of their powers represent their typical roles and personalities. Bob is the father and they usually need to be strong and stable so he has super strength, Helen is a mom that needs to be flexible to keep up with everyone in the family so she has an elastic body, Violet is a shy teenager that puts up walls so she can turn invisible and create force fields, Dash is the young, energetic brother and as such has super speed, Jack Jack as the baby has an incredible amount of potential and, as we see in the Jack Jack Attack short film and the sequel, has A LOT of powers and even Lucius applies as the honorary COOL uncle and as such, has Ice powers.

I once read a lore article about Jack Jack's powers; and the general idea is that as a baby his power isn't quite permanent yet, so it goes through a kind of "anything goes" phase. That being said it appears to be a variety of different shapeshifting abilities. Turning into fire; a monster; turning into metal.
@jessecortez9449
@jessecortez9449 Жыл бұрын
I've heard it put similarly in that babies are full of potential yet to be realized so to the baby anything is possible. The other kids may not have realized their powers until a bit older as their parents were trying to keep their powers low key and thus resulted in their powers being fixed by their more formed internal identities. Dash rushes things out of excitement so his power became speed and Violet is the awkward teenager that doesn't feel comfortable being seen yet so she goes invisible and creates invisible barriers. Jack Jack noticed the powers at such a young ago and his potential is completely unfocused so anything goes until it is focused through his identity.
@patrickcromwell7554
@patrickcromwell7554 Жыл бұрын
@@jessecortez9449 Yeah that sounds like what the lore was going for. But I noticed that whatever Jack Jack did seemed to be categorized in some way as a form of shapeshifting. so while his powers may not have settled on a specific type, they SEEM to be about that category: shapeshifting.
@donaldwatson7698

Brad Bird is, and has been, one of the strongest western voices in recognising animation as a medium, not a genre. He uses Incredibles as example #1 of Disney-style movies being appropriate for adults too. We use the term “adult animation” for either super edgy things like Rick&Morty or ‘spicy’ films. But if we see animation as a medium we can get great movies like Incredibles or Spiderverse that have their own genre away from animation.
@Jupiter-T
@Jupiter-T Жыл бұрын
Yes! I totally agree. I hate the Hollywood idea of "it's not REAL until we make a live action version", as if animations are made just for budget purposes or just for kids. Of course that's ridiculous - animation often can take far longer and cost way more. Animation is, as you say, a medium! It communicates not just through writing and cinematography, but also through design, movement, exaggeration, and stylization. Many of my favorite animated shows or films would lose something if they were redone in live action.
@mjvdg4194
@mjvdg4194 Жыл бұрын
@@Jupiter-T love it as artists and critics too, since it’d actually get assessed properly. Because you also have the bonus of the artists being able to control ‘every’ element of mise-en-scene in the shots, so they can have it mean something in the background. Wind direction, wind speed, city traffic, an extra’s back hair, etc. I remember someone trying to say that the lighting on Miles in Spiderverse 2 didn’t have meaning and, like that legit isn’t possible anymore.

I'm sorry if someone already said this. What I love even more about this movie is that they're each based on familial archetypes. Bob has super strength because he's the father bearing the weight of the world to provide for his family. Helen is a loving mother who is always flexible and gets pulled in multiple directions. Violet is a shy teenage girl who is facing social anxiety so she's always wishing she could be invisible and puts up walls (force fields) to help deal with the fear. Dash is a ball of energy just like any other elementary-age boy so he has super speed. Lastly, Jack-Jack is a baby. Babies are full of untapped potential, but we also start to see personality develop in infants, so we don't see his powers until the end. And even then, it isn't set in stone.

Why not have your wife comment on the movies first since it is the first time reaction that we are here for? Then you can give your comments afterwards, but the initial reactions from someone's first experience is what I would most like to see.

One of my favorite Pixar films. And definitely one of my top ten best movie experiences in my childhood. I remember when my family and I watched this movie on opening night the theater room was so packed that some of the audiences had to watch the movie sitting on the stairs. Good times good times. Plus, Dash was always my favorite character in these movies.

I stand by that this movie even though it’s older, looks way better than the sequel. It has a style that fits itself. It isnt trying to be super realistic. Not trying to make them look like real textured humans. Not trying to get you to notice the tiny wrinkles, fabric strands, or hair follicles sticking out.

One of the most amazing achievements Pixar had from this movie is creating Universal Man/Woman. All the other super heroes and heroines (except Frozone) and all the other people (besides E, Bob's boss, Syndrome and the Parr family) were variations on that character rig.

One of those movies up there u can watch as an adult or child and still be entertained, Quality of animation is creative, funny and good enough for it to be timeless, some things get lost when so much can be gained from a pretty picture. Such as story, character delevopment, silly risks that makes something a classic.

This is the movie that started the "Pixar Mom" thing. Also, one of the greatest line deliveries ever: "Oh no... you married Elastigirl?! Oh! And got BUUUUSSSYYY!" This movie came out of nowhere and just absolutely owned. So freaking good. Brad Bird is a phenomenally good director as he proved with Iron Giant and this. And then again with Ghost Protocol for the Mission Impossible franchise. He really gets action and how to film it. Great sense of humor in this film that feels completely like it belongs in each situation. Nothing forced.

John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin on Cheers) makes a cameo (or more) in *every* Pixar film: here he was The Underminer. The dad in this was the dad in Poltergeist. The mom in this was the would-be mom in Raising Arizona. Director Brad Bird was the voice of superhero costume designer Edna. Mr. Incredible's boss is known for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Gossip Girl, the Toy Story movies, and The Princess Bride.

Both Disney and Pixar's The Incredibles and Sam Rami's Spider-Man 2 are the best movies to come out in 2004. Are you going to react to Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy that also came out in 2004? That movie is also worth celebrating 20 years.

I give a like for the costumes alone 😁 Content Idea for Holden for darker times: Document your weight loss process to cosplay Balon from Ashoka to become this towering figure of a fallen knight. Maybe even to become the real live Mr Incredible as an next step afterwards.

Did you realize their powers reflect their age, and the kid’s names reflect their powers? Bob: The overworked dad, 30s ish, keeping them in one house, incredibly strong. Helen: The mom, stretched thin dealing with everyone’s problems, keeping the family together, elasticity. Violet: The shy teenager, late middle - early highschool, uses ultraviolet (violet) light to disappear, force fields are violet. Dash: The kid, late elementary - early middle school, energetic, can run super fast (or dash off). Jack Jack: The baby, don’t know what they will do, unpredictable at that age, making him a Jack of all Trades. Syndrome: Buddy has hero syndrome, as he creates machines he destroyd. He wanted to be incrediboy, but got rejected so he started taking superheroes powers

The Incredibles is on my list of favorite movies. I saw this while in college as an animation major, with Pixar being across the bay. So my fellow college friends and I were excited to see this when it was released, also cause we all knew some of the people whom worked on the flick. You defiantly need to watch the short "Jack-Jack Attack" and I do hope you watch The Incredibles 2 Brad Bird is one of those writers and directors who I feel puts alot of thought and feel behind his projects, The Iron Giant defiantly being one of his finest pieces of work in my opinion, that did not get the recognition it deserved in theaters and box office. Side note: Brad Bird also voices Edna Mode. "NO CAPES!" 😂

I loved this movie so much that I have the fancy DVD version of it, and watched all the background info on it, it even goes into the past heroes of that age, their bios, their powers, and what happened to them in universe (the movie explains it, but the bios don't know up to that point.)

I get the feeling that people don't often pick up on the pun in Violet's name. "Dash" is obvious, so is the family name "Parr" when they are anything but standard. "Violet" appears to reference the phrase "shrinking violet" someone who is reticent or shy, and Violet Parr certainly is for much of the movie.

When Mr. Incredible throws the rock at the guard up on the catwalk, it's the little attention to detail - the guard's head doing a quick bobbing snap before falling over - that just helps sell the humor.

If this was really something you liked enough, there's also a live-action Superhero Family show called "No Ordinary Family". It stars Micheal Chiklis (The Thing from Fantastic Four) and Julie Benz (Darla from Angel). It only lasted one season then was cancelled but I believe it could have been really interesting.

Still one of my favourite movies of all time even as a grown up, i’m really surprised neither of you brought up how this movie is similar to Civil War in the way that it shows consequences of heroes without supervision and the conversation about do they have the right to get involved in all these situations without being asked. Also has one of the best villains of all superhero movies animated or live action, he really nearly wiped all the superheroes on his timeline and thats with having any super powers really impressive him and Capes were really the biggest threats to this universe luckily Eda was there to help combat both😂ps the game of this was incredible pun intended but no games that are made from movies usually aren’t good but this was an exception

I think the biggest struggle Marvel Studios is facing right now with developing a Fantastic Four movie is because of how The Incredibles already nailed the dynamic of superhero family. They have an uphill battle when they have to do a Fantastic Four movie that isn't just a rehash of The Incredibles.
