Though it links to varios stories in India, I am mentioning the one famously listed under Akbar-Birbal Tales. The emperor Akbar wanted to test Birbal’s intelligence, so one fine day, the king gave his ring to one of his court members and asked him to hide it and act as if it was stolen. When Birbal came, the king pretended about the stealing of his ring and wanted Birbal to find out the thief. Birbal was extremely clever. He knew that no one from outside the court could even reach closer to the king’s private space, and thus he asked for the place where it was last kept. He went near the almira where Akbar pointed that he had kept his ring before going to the lavatory. Birbal placed his ear on the almira, as if hearing it whisper a hint. After a while, he uttered, “the almira tells clearly, that the one who has stolen the ring, has a blade of grass in his beard”. The one who had the ring immediately reached for his beard, and exposed himself. Hence the proverb, “Chor ki dadhi mei tinka” with an English variant, “A guilty conscience needs no accuser”

@@Nat4Brendan To tell the long story short, an investigation was ongoing to find the thief in a king's court with all the suspectes lined up. A wise minister announced that the thief is in the plain sight because of the twig of grass in his beard. It was a bluff but the thief couldn't stop from checking his beard and hence was caught, hence the idiom "Chor kee daadhi main tinka", (Twig in the thief's beard).

One of my favorite memories of the two years we lived in SC was discovering tomato rice in the school lunchroom. That's some wonderful stuff. That school was also where I discovered dairy butter. We had only ever had margarine at home, but that school gave us little squares of real butter between two little pieces of wax paper. It was white as porcelain and mindblowingly delicious.

That's one of the things I wish they could do is bring someone over who is native to the dish that will cook it the way it's meant to be. I'm sure they do the best they can, that part of the world has a lot of great dishes. There's just nothing like having someone native to the dish cooking it. I think back to my grandmother's cooking and the memories of the smells, I would never claim to cook as well as she did but I would feel honored to be able to cook for them. It's great seeing how food from all over the world reminds them of something they have there.😊

Pickled is the only way I can eat okra. I'll still think of this quote anyway. If you can get it in your area, Wickles Pickles pickled okra is incredible. Sweet, garlicky, with a big fat cayenne pepper floating in there with the okra. Marvelous, especially in the summer heat.

This channel is so great this episode touches my heart because soul food is apart of my culture. I must say, that’s not how hush puppies got their name. Slaves weren’t allowed to hunt. Hush puppies were used to keep dogs quiet while the person tried to escape captivity. Hence the name “hush” puppies. Although I do understand you trying to keep the channel as positive as possible. That’s the part that I love. Stay positive friends.

Actually, “Hush Puppies,” got their name because as the slaves tried to escape the slave master’s plantation at night, the fleeing slaves would feed the watch dogs the fritters to keep them from barking. It was a way to try and escape enslavement.
