Seatbelts- spot on! To avoid the “seatbelt stuck when on an angle”, I have a peg clipped to my sun visor- before I take the seatbelt off, I clip that to the top of the seatbelt preventing it from retracing. When getting back into the car I can put the seatbelt back on and take the peg off.

Apart from the seat belt idiocy, the guy took the wrong line, drove too fast, and because the left rear was so far down in the hole, he suffered a massive amount of rear steer which pushed the airborne front further to the left until it rolled. It's a case of doing the same thing and expecting a different result, by taking the same line three times, the third time too fast. After the second fail, he should have grown some balls and winched up, or looked for a different line where he could keep the rear end level to avoid the rear steer. Different topic - when doing deep river crossings, leave your seatbelt off.

Hi Matt, in a recent safety review at work, machines were found to have the seat belt fastened with the operator sitting on top of the seatbelt. The seatbelt belts keep you in control of the vehicle especially in rough conditions. There is now a policy of cought without a seatbelt on you are cought without a job. In the case of this 4wd , if the driver had been wearing a seatbelt could he have stayed in control and saved his vehicle calling it a near miss as you had happen?.we may never know . All the 👌

I would also argue that having a suspension with way too much travel and a very light spring rate can also help cause this type of rollover. The other issue is weight distribution....having what appears to be at least 150 lbs (not including the aftermarket bumper/tire carrier) of tire/gear/water hanging off the rear end only makes the front end lighter and the springy suspension rebound that much harder. 50/50 weight distribution isn't correct either because it depends where the center of gravity is. Hanging 1000 lbs off the front and rear bumper may still be 50/50 weight distribution but the vehicle would handle like crap. I would think having shocks with a very robust rebound valving would help keep the truck closer to the ground when making extreme climbs on rutted trails like this. Hopefully no long term human damage other than egos.

Without a seat belt he has all control in the cab he may have as he was thrown about. Brakes are on.
@overlandready2 ай бұрын
The obvious thing to me is the back axle pivots the vehicle body up and back, this looks like it's some form of spring dislocation system to give more articulation, but the effect it has is to put the body weight higher and back so altering the CoG of the vehicle in those directions. The brake is ineffective as it locks the wheel to the radius arm, which is still free to rotate as there is nothing stopping it until the damper is fully extended, that is too late for the vehicle and it goes over. Personally I advokate no great amount of lifts and certainly no dislocation on the axles, as it has no real benefit. In this instance it proves to be a massive failure point.
@MadMatt4WD2 ай бұрын
I don’t think there’s any dislocation system. The patrols have short lower control arms so the rear axle swings forward under big flex
@overlandready2 ай бұрын
@@MadMatt4WD yeah, maybe, but the dampers hadn't broken so they were too long for the springs, I suspect something like +5 dampers on +2 springs. So it was able to over stretch. As it goes over you can see it folds under. Unfortunately you can't beat physics on these things.

In relation to the whole seat belt thing. I ride mountain bikes & there is a school of thought that I subscribe to with it. I ride with cleated pedals & shoes that locks my feet into the pedal, It is designed that when I twist my feet, they release from the pedal. Some like them some don't. It does take some use & practice to become confident with them especially when come off. When I 1st started using them I was coming of more often, so I was not doing the hairy stuff during that period. When you come of the bike especially @ speed & down hill, staying with the bike generally means less injury & damaged. Two objects tumbling on the same trajectory disconnected have a higher chance of colliding. You don't need more to collide with, you already have plenty! It is possible that the feet can disengage from the pedal before stopping & perhaps that is even possible with a seat belt too especially in a role over. In both situations you are better locked in. I think too it is important to makes sure you have a means of cutting the seat belt mounted within easy visible reach. That was a nice Patrol. That gas bottle hanging on the back I would of mounted some where in the cab further forward, it might not of made much difference but any weight you can bring forward & lower is better in my opinion. The problem is you are never really going to know how much of a difference & I think that is often a trap in many peoples thinking. So too in MTB weight placement is so important.
@MadMatt4WD2 ай бұрын
Here in OZ we’re not allowed to carry gas in the cab because if they leak you can get an explosion or gassed.

To big of a lift in this car, must be 5”, you can see the rear wheel out of set location to the vehicle with to lighter springs going everywhere, and then how much weight on the rear bumper, sure, this set up great for hard tracks with large deviations, not hill climbs, because you have a LARGE lift doesn’t mean INVINCIBLE. Thank goodness the driver survived, and has learned a lesson that could save his life = always wear the seat belt. I’ve seen cars roll over at less than 20ks an hour bush tracking, because of spent shocks on the rear end.

Matt, the only thing I can see is the gas bottle etc adding a lot of weight to the backend and sticking out well over the axle line. Also, he is not wearing a seat belt, he would get thrown out should he roll down the hill. I think that the big issue here is that people are too reluctant to say enough is enough and back off. Peer pressure, perhaps.
