I liked Lydia's line about sleeping with "prince valium", but my favorite is "Open this door you dead people, or we'll bust it down and drag you out by the ropes you hanged yourself with!!" Catherine O'Hara is amazing. I love that Delia's first instinct when she finds out her house is haunted is that she can bully the ghosts. This movie is so silly. Probably my favorite Tim Burton. Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and The Nightmare Before Christmas are excellent too.

I'm honestly with Beetlejuice 100% on the Exorcist thing... that film is so f'ing stupid and silly I laugh out loud whenever it's on... can't even fathom how someone could find it scary. I mean.... I *guess* if you believe demonic possession is real and believe that they care about your imaginary friend's name getting shouted at them repeatedly, and you don't find the entire premise inherently silly, then... maybe?? but even in that case, the makeup and FX are so goofy and everything is just so incredibly over the top. Seems like a comedy to me. Though not as side-splitting as the Blair Witch Project.

I think BJ says 20:59 ‘the only one I can deal with is Edgar Allan Poe’s daughter, she understands me’ is referring to how Charles sort of looks like paintings of Poe with that suit he wears to the dinner party and that Poe wrote about birds and was reportedly a bird watcher like Charles.

Jax, this is another from my childhood! Glad you enjoyed it for what it is, even though a lot goes unexplained in the film itself. Having done some reading on Wiki and other places, I can answer at least a few of your questions. Betelgeuse does seem insanely powerful. Exactly why is never stated, but my guess it that he's driven by hatred of the living and a desire to make them suffer. I think that's why he wants so badly to be free -- to bring chaos to the living world without restraint or anyone to stop him. It's also why the rest of the afterlife bureaucracy is so eager to keep him sealed away. And you're right, the abjuration spell prevents Betelgeuse from freeing himself by saying his own name. You're also correct about what was happening to the Maitlands in the climax. Otto thought that he was performing a seance, but it was really an exorcism ritual, which means that Adam and Barbara would have ended up as Lost Souls. And while I get your frustration with them, and I can also sympathize with the Maitlands for finding the "Recently Deceased" book a hard slog. Sure, the information there is necessary, but it can be awfully difficult to get through a book written by bureaucrats who seem unable to write without overly technical language. I'm not sure exactly what happened to Betelgeuse in the end. One theory that I've read is that his wedding to Lydia was actually completed! He returned to the living world for just an instant until the sandworm devoured him, which sent him back to the afterlife's waiting room. Just a theory, but it kina makes sense to me. And rather than a favourite line in this movie, Michael Keaton's was my favourite performance. It's so manic and menacing you can be forgiven for not recognizing him, and yet he makes the character almost lovable. Can't wait until "Infinity War"!
@TheTrashStash

loved the reaction! the thing about beetlejuice is that he's not necessarily evil, he's just shady. he's kind of like a sleazy used car salesman but for exorcism haha. also one of my favorite things about the movie is how quickly beetlejuice actually did solve the problem when lydia needed his help lol, he showed up and solved it in like 10 minutes

Always a fun watch with Jax. Being a lifetime Southern California resident, I've had opportunities not available to many people. Back in the day, 1979, I went up to CBS Television City tio watch a taping of the short-lived Mary Tyler Moore Hour. As is typical with live television tapings, they had a "warmup" act to whip the audience into a laughing frenzy, so to provide the hilarity for the necessary soundtrack for the show. In the case of this show, it was a very young Michael Keaton, who also served as a minor player on the cast. He was still developing his chops, but we all know they developed well. It's a great memory, having seen him at 28 in a role very few saw him do ... standup. The show only existed for a single season, but it turned out to be a launching pad for a remarkable career. This movie is sort of Tim Burton's take on an old Cary Grant movie, "Topper" in which a ghost couple live with an older man and help him through life. Thanks for sharing, Jax. You're a true treasure.

@@reactswithjax I don't think he performed standup outside of this "warmup" task. I never saw an indication of it, but he was incredibly charming and put everybody in a great mood for the show. He was basically low man on the totem pole on that show, it being his first break. I was lucky enough to see several other great moments in television history ... like the All in the Family episode where Archie recommended arming all the passengers on a plane to solve the hijacking crisis. Thanks for doing what you do, Jax. I loved Lamby "running" or "Dancing" at the end - whatever that was you were doing with his front legs. You take cute to a whole new level. My best to you!

Favorite line is when his deceased wife says it'll just be the two of them forever, Alec Baldwin replies "Maybe this is heaven." We all need an Alec Baldwin in Beetlejuice in our lives. People were upset about Michael Keaton becoming Batman because of this movie. They figured with his stature and his performance here, he'd make a better Joker, starting the trend of fans being mad at every single actor cast as Batman since. The Harry Belafonte dance scenes are iconic. "Sounds like Lydia got an A in math" always pops in my head when I hear the end song. Sadly Harry passed earlier this year, but at an extremely advanced age having lived a very successful life as a civil rights activist and popularuzing Calypso music worldwide.

@26:19--Otho, it seems to me, prides himself on being hip and trendy, hence being a hair analyst (briefly) and a paranormal researcher (until the bottom dropped out.) So ending up in a powder-blue 70s leisure suit would indeed have been a nightmare for him, especially out where everyone could see it. My favorite lines in the movie are many, but two always stood out: "Don't mind her, she's still upset because someone dropped a house on her sister." and the one guest as everyone was leaving the first party: "Delia, you are a flake. You have always been a flake. If you insist on frightening people--do it with your sculpture."

There are little bits going on in the background that you only notice on repeat watches, for instance; In the scene where Charles is in his den reading a magazine while Adam and Barbara are talking around him, you notice little subscription cards are falling out of the magazine, but every time he turns a page more of them just keep falling out. In the scene later in the movie in Juno's office, there's a mirror in her office, and in the mirror you see people reflected, but they're dead people, or skeletons, and you realize they're in a theater, it's supposed to be a reflection of the audience in the theater watching the movie!

@@reactswithjax Beetlejuice is extremely rewatchable (maybe I'm biased). Even now I could probably recite all the dialog as I'm watching it, and I think it's so memorable because there really isn't any wasteful dialog in it, there's intentionality in everything said. Danny Elfman's score is amazing, I believe on the DVD there was an alternate score only audio track, and it really highlights how important the score is to the feel of the movie. One of my favorite scenes at the beginning of the movie, when Adam goes to the hardware store to pick up supplies, the old barber's story just cracks me up every time, especially how it just gets cut off abruptly where it sounds like it's about to get ugly and violent, and Adam rushes off, because he's probably heard and been disturbed by it many times before.

😎👍 A movie that came out a year before this one that has a similar ambience about it is "The Witches Of Eastwick." It has Jack Nicholson playing the same sort of anti-hero that Michael Keaton plays in this film, and also features an all-star cast.

The movie that introduced me to Michael Keaton (all hail the Keaton), and Wynona Ryder, on whom I've had a crush since...since I saw this movie (I was 11 at the time). Tim Burton has made some spectacular movies (Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Ed Wood, this), and some...crap (Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Planet of the Apes [remake...blegh!]), but this still remains my favorite. Just a great big weird grab-bag of original ideas, and kick-ass performances. Hope you enjoy.

1:40 "You just threw him out the window?" He'll be fine. He could have thrown it off the roof of a skyscraper and the spider would fall all the way to the street and be just fine. Until the car runs over it, but still, the fall wouldn't kill it. Really big spiders like tarantulas can be hurt or killed from falling, but not that little guy. Physics.

I didn't see anyone else comment on this. When Beetlejuice makes his big appearance and knocks the pair through the ceiling...he next changes Otho's clothing to that awful blue suit...you were wondering about that, that's the suit he (Glenn Shadix) wore in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, when it happened, there's a little music change similar to Pee-Wee's theme music as well. Tim Burton also directed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. It was just a wink-and-a-nod to the 1985 film.

Great reaction Ms. Jaxx. This is a classic that I have seen so many times and it never gets old for me. There is actually a sequel coming up soon where Winona Ryder I believe will be a mom with a child. I know Keaton will be back as well. Not sure on anyone else like Geena or Alec considering age and such. Looking forward to the next reaction. Enjoy the weekend

Regarding the fly screaming “help me!” It’s referencing the original ( *NOT* the 1986 remake) movie “The Fly” from 1958, starring Vincent Price. The remake stars Jeff Goldblum, and…Geena Davis! They’re both worth watching, but the “help me!” comes from the original.

Since you asked, my favorite line was "I've seen The Exorcist about 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it!" Another Burton/Keaton movie you should check out is Batman (1989). Keaton's also good in a small role as Dogberry in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing (1993) 1988 was a good year for Winona Ryder. I had a big crush on her after seeing her in this movie and in Heathers. Btw, Beetlejuice 2 is in production now for release in September of next year. Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Michael Keaton will be back, and Jenna Ortega will play Lydia's daughter. Tim Burton is directing it.
