Same where I'm at. Appointments are having to be mades 2-3 months in advance. There is a person in a neighboring county who does "bulk" sterilizations not taking anymore Appointments for female cats and dogs. Emily, the Spay Neuter clinic is where everyone goes in our city for neutering and spaying. It is so much cheaper than the vet. The problem is, there is a long wait list. I heard that Brockville spay neuter clinic is much shorter, and it is actually DRIVE THROUGH! Lolol! We are bringing our cat there. Also…go a bit out of the city for your vet. I go to Manotick, but I hear great things about Carp, Perth, etc. for my cat’s vax, it was a couple hundred bucks.
@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
So happy to see someone from Canada who can offer some useful information. I hate the feeling of wanting to offer help and advice but the CA and US systems are definitely different, which is frustrating. Like, here in the US, there are mobile neuter vans. You need to have an established vet who has signed off on them being healthy enough (which they can do when they get their shots and whatnot), but its like $70 for a male cat and $120 for female (more invasive). The waitlist is LONG though. And here, rescues can't adopt out intact animals (at least the places I've lived). They must all be fixed. I just wish that were also true for animal shelters (they're different here in the US) because the voucher you get from the animal shelter won't come close to covering the cost of a neuter, much less a spay.
@deendrew36 Жыл бұрын
@@Chaotic_Pixie I am sure it is very different between the two countries. I think I live in the same city even as Emily, so it is easy to give a recommendation. It is just nuts how you either have to pay through the nose, or wait forever. Our vets are super crowded these days, I don’t know why? More people with pets since pandemic? I don’t know.
@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
@@deendrew36 definitely more ppl with pets or more pets in pet households plus vet medicine has one of the highest rates of burnout in any profession. I think NICU and ER nurses are the only professions with higher burnout rates? I’m not entirely sure exactly where they fall, but vets & vet techs are in the top 10. You go through as much education as an MD, more if you’re going to specialize in big animals or exotics or a specialty like Ortho or Ophthalmology etc to make half or less what an MD does with the same amount of school debt. At least that’s the case in the US.

I would say keep contacting different vet clinics. Maybe it's regional (I'm in Ontario in a small town), but a spay here is well under $300 and a neuter is even less. If you watch for a microchip clinic, you can get them chipped for $25/cat. Sometimes shelters/rescue organizations will also offer what they call "spay/neuter vouchers" where they do cover some of the cost.
@MovieTrollop Жыл бұрын
(I have no idea about Canada so this just just ideas) Asking in feed stores and pet stores if they have low cost vaccine clinic days and low cost spay days anywhere… it can really help. Contacting rescues instead of the aspca can also be helpful resources. Kittens are so cute!

I would really recommend looking into more rescues besides the SPCA. I don't know how it all works in Canada, but I know the rescue where I got my dog who was not originally fixed like she was supposed to be when I adopted her did the surgery for free. I also know they do free Spay/Neuter events throughout the city during the year. Also my old neighbors cat was also impregnated and she needed to get fixed since she lived with a boy cat and they did that for free because my neighbor couldn't afford it, but it needed to be done.

At least in California, the shelters aren’t full because people are returning their pets. It’s because during lockdown, people didn’t sterilize their animals so the number of puppies and kittens is way up. Also, there’s a veterinarian shortage - it’s a super high attrition job and lots of vets quit during the pandemic. Plus there are not enough vet schools to meet the need. I used to volunteer at my local SPCA so got the scoop. I love the kitten content!

I’m a bit behind on my videos right now but hopefully you’ll see this (and it won’t be too late!). I used to do a lot of kitten rescue here in the US so I’ve dealt with a lot of the issues you’re experiencing with the kittens. I would look online to see if there are any low cost spay/neuter clinics around you. Where I live there is one that travels between several main cities. I don’t know where in Canada you live but, rural areas usually have them for barn cats. Depending on how you feel about it, you can also try looking into TNR services. (Trap, Neuter, Release). In some places they will provide low cost spay/neuters for found kittens though they will likely require them to have their ears clipped to indicate they have been fixed. It’s not my favorite method due to the ear clipping but… if it’s that or having to abandon the kittens I’ve always viewed it as the lesser of two evils.

I remember when I got my cat it was $250 to adopt, which included shots, spay, and chip... I'm in Ontario, so you definitely have cheaper options... Though I will say it is getting harder to get vet appointments as my girl had to wait 2 months for her yearly checkup (a little over a week to go - she's not complaining!!!) If you're near either of the the provincial borders, maybe see if there's options in Ontario or New Brunswick you can take advantage of?

Vets get the same amount of education as a people doctor but vets get less respect and less money. I can see why there’s a shortage. Neutering is cheaper than spaying (IIRC) since it’s external. I’m surprised it’s so hard to get and so expensive. I love the little kitty chirps.

It’s actually good to hold off on the boys for a while. I mean, not TOO long because they’ll eventually start spraying and you don’t want that. But I think my two boys were nearly six months old when I had it done. It allowed them to develop more fully, plus they got the big fat tomcat heads which are insanely cute. She was a black fluffy kitty like mama kitty - like so similar to her. Book content great as always! I'm getting through some fun children's books I found at a used book event in the town I work in and finishing up book 1 of The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels. The language is giving me Bronte or Austen vibes. It's quirkier than what I'm used to, but enjoying the book.

May not hurt to hit up other shelters and rescues about how to get the fuzzy butts fixed and shots update at an affordable price. Someone at one of them may have information, or even a way, to get them cared for. Also, not sure how different the vets in Canada are different from those here in the U.S.' but I've found that prices can be very different between the vezs for the same thing. FYI: female cazs are usually more than the males, because it is a more invasive surgery. If she is in heat or preggers than it'll be a bit more. When speaking with the rescue/shelter, it might help to explore the possibility of the kittens you aren't fully adopting be adopted out through the shelter or rescue. You could then just foster them while they await being adopted by their forever family. Shelters usually assist with the medical needs of those in foster. Would also make finding good homes easier. (I've been fortunate to meet those who adopted kitties I've fostered too. Most have been kind to even let me know how the kitty is doing after about a week.) Also, look into kitty recovery suits/pjs before they are fixed. They are a whole lot easier to used on the ladies instead of the cone after surgery. Lol, also not likely to be taken off by the little booger.

When you find a vet, check if they have a health plan or something similar. In the UK some vets have them, it's like £10/20 a month and it covers anual vaccines and other stuff. Then, when and if you can, I highly recommend insurance, even if it's the lower coverage, it's worth it. (and because mama cat and kitty, or kitty if you keep one, are going to be spayed/neutered, the premium is lower). I also read Remembrance of Earth's Past, totally agree with you. I think part of the issue was the writing was the translation because I found the 2nd book easier to read and only at the end realised it had a different translator.

Veterinary care is expensive; years ago, over Xmas my cat ate some string and it became entangled with internal organs, by the time the issue was resolved I spent close to 10 thousand dollars. I was lucky in that I was in the process of changing jobs, so for a short period had a double income and received a signing bonus. I think that is one of the challenges of pet ownership in that most people are not aware of the costs if our fur babies need medical care. I hope you are able to find a solution.
