This story puts me in mind of that quote that is in front of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline: “Fairy tales are more than true. Not because they say that dragons exist, but because they say that dragons can be beaten.”

The grandpa surprisingly saving the day with an unexpected ability at violence reminds me of another Stephen King short story whose title I won't mention. :) I like how Grandpop's experience in Vietnam enabled him to recognize what kind of men they were confronting, as well as to go into combat mode... unlike the father, who just froze up. The father freezing up and doing nothing to help reminds me of "Force Majeur", where it resulted in creating a real crisis in his marriage.

Fantastic video , loved the breaks where you gave your thoughts , very similar to what I was thinking as you read the story . Kingo is brilliant . Great coincidence for me with your Flannery O'Connor story comparison . I just finished reading Lucinda Williams' autobiography and she talks about her Dad , who was a poet , taking her to visit his friend Flannery when Lucinda was a kid . Never heard of Flannery before so I wanted to know more about Lucinda's influences . The first story I read was "Good Man..." . Thanks for making me aware of a Flannery and Stephen King connection .

Message from the future here. (May 2024) It’s interesting how, now that the story is printed in the short story collection You Like It Darker, there are subtle changes in the text of this story like the removal that the Buick is a station wagon in the first paragraph and “there they are” replaced with “there it is” at the end of the second paragraph. Reminds me of George Lucas not leaving his Star Wars films alone.

If you like this you should read King’s ‘Batman and Robin get in an Altercation’ - Harper’s magazine 2012 and Bazaar of Bad Dreams 2015. Just for the record I was rooting for Granpa from the moment his ungrateful son started his whinging. It’s easy for people to forget that old people have lived an entire life without your help. They just might be better at it than you think. I deleted my other comments bc they weren’t to complain, or get attention, just for you to see but I didn’t get to read your response about the -Sugar babies- ‘inward babies’ 🤢🫣 and waving from the gutter. I saw you did respond after I already deleted. What did you say?
@stephenkingbookclub10546 ай бұрын
Oh, I was saying that it's not a reference to "sugar babies" -- there was a black licorice candy back in the mid-1900s that was called by a racial slur: "The N-Word" + Babies. Yikes! --- As to your suggestions about the interruptions, I get it... If I could, I would just read the stories... but just doing that would be copyright infringement (which could result in the channel getting a strike). I do have 2 videos that are just the story & visuals -- and hopefully those won't get flagged because they are from the 60's. But I'm sure I wouldn't be able to simply narrate King's new stuff. So I thought the next best thing might be to do a long-form reaction and review mixed in with the Stephen Kingo stuff. :)
