A technique I've been doing is getting an audiobook or some kind of ereader (usually the textbook publishers have the robotic reader with the ebook) for the books. It makes reading the books a lot easier and you can retain the information a lot better. But definitely what she said though, don't read the whole book if it's just some novel or some reference book. One semester is not enough for that bullshit.

1. Circle the most important bits about the question. 2. Go through the reading list and highlight the reading materials that are most relevant to the question. 3. Read the question and on a piece of paper, write up your initial impressions and questions that pop up in your mind. Define the terms in the question ie. what "women" does the question ask about? Disabled/married/heterosexual. What is "literary genre"? 4. Writing notes when you're doing the readings: The Red/Purple/Black technique (she made it up). Red highlights - literary sources. Purple - your own thoughts. Black - secondary contemporary sources. Then when you actually get to writing, your arguments are gonna be the "purple thoughts" first. Then you'll back it up with the "red sources" as your evidence. The blacks will supplement your argument to show what modern scholars think. tips on reading/taking notes: if you need to read a really long book, go on google and read the summary because there's no way you can finish 10 thick ones in a couple days. Look for the key themes you want to know, locate which chapters it's in, and skim read that chapter for key info. if you have time read the intro and conclusion to get the general gist.

I think reading for the sake of it and reading to write a paper about what you've read are worlds apart. Sure I could read several books in a few days but if you were to then make me sit an exam of specific details of those books...I doubt I'd do well. I'd likely retain the story and the general message of what I've read but thassssit. That being said, maybe I'm just slow.

Vee - YES! I love that you talk about this. I think too many people assume that they can't do a degree (or course) because they don't have the ability to read 5+ books per week, while also writing, doing other courses perhaps, and trying to keep yourself alive. All you need is an effective system - and you have nailed it!

So I can only advice everyone to give this a HUGE try if you want to have an easier life! Also, do your citation work right away and not wait for it to the end!!!

It is similar to my technique but yours is slightly more effective than mine. I'm definitely going to try the color coding and initial thoughts page the next time though. (I just realized the next time I write a history term paper I will be in a masters programm. Time flies like crazy) But I will stick with taking notes by hand since I remember what I have written down better when I do that.

girl. this was so. helpful. omg. I study History and I already feel like I have a good notetaking system for essays and I'm doing well - but your red/purple/black system is going to save me when I write my dissertation this semester, this way I can see and keep track of how many primary sources I'm including and make sure I have enough. thank you!! best of luck with your disso

The reading and note taking advice you gave about writing out your initial thoughts of the question and then just looking for that in the reading, was super helpful! I have to read a lot of case studies for business and I'll definitely be trying this tonight. Thank you, love your channel and your energy 😊
