“It feels stupid to talk about books, but it’s felt that way for a while.” Your content acts like an escape for a lot of people, and I certainly don’t think it’s stupid for you to talk about books while the world is on fire. People need some reprieve, and we are lucky to have your content to provide some of that. You aren’t obligated, obviously, to provide this content. But we appreciate it. (And this is not to say don’t talk about what you want to, American politics or otherwise. Escape or not… life goes on, and that’s part of life, and you’re not an addition to the stress people are feeling.)

Please do not “shut up” about what is happening in other countries. Your concern and empathy is important and, as someone who lives in America and is sad, scared, and angry with what happened with the election and where things are going, I greatly appreciate you. Also, please don’t minimize your own feelings! If you feel depressed from the weather, you are 10000% allowed to feel that and talk about it!

Highly recommend putting together an outfit for walking in the rain and every now and then just, well, walking in the rain. It's difficult when it's cold and wet and miserable, but I've often been really grateful that I did. Wool socks, a comfy base layer, a pair of good waterproof boots (I use my hiking boots!), a reliable waterproof jacket (especially one with room for layering), basic rainpants for when it's really pouring, and the knowledge that when you're done you can go home to a warm dry place and drink a nice hot drink. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it sucks, and a lot of the time you might just pick the walking pad instead- but every now and then a walk in the rain is just what you need. (Also that second Liam goal was ABSURD!)

I’m sure many of the comments have said this - but you’re offering enough by creating content we can escape in. I’m devastated by this election and I’m processing so many stages of grief. But seeing your life moving forward is helpful. My grief is real and valid but life DOES keep marching on and I can’t help my brothers and sisters in marginalized communities if I don’t allow myself to move forward too. So as a depressed American, thank you for speaking on it. Thank you for holding space for us but mostly thank you for being a bright light for me during this turmoil. 💙💙

I don't know how exactly to word what I want to say, but I genuinely was happy to hear you complain about the weather! It was like a time capsule to how I felt before Tuesday. It's nice to turn on a video and just hear about some books and not have to think about things for 40 minutes. It's the same reason I read; sometimes, I want to learn and be empowered and improve myself, but sometimes I just want a silly time to distract myself and take a little break. And I think you strike a really comfortable balance for me between being aware and talking and sharing your feelings about current events, and also just yapping about books to recharge and be able to do something instead of just spiraling into helplessness.

You're incredibly valid. The thing about American politics is that it affects everyone. Even if folks in other countries think it won't affect them, it absolutely will. Your empathy is a gift, even when it feels so hard because you feel so much. Anyone who says that politics don't belong in books is so wrong. Reading is inherently political -- it's where we form our thoughts and opinions. Your content is very comforting, so please don't think you don't do enough. You truly do.

I appreciate you bringing up these heavy, horrible things that happen in our world. We don’t live in a vacuum and I think the thing most people don’t realize is how much we need to adopt a more community-minded approach to world events. Social media and airplanes and travel have connected us all more than we could have imagined and what happens in other countries will eventually affect us all. I have space to empathize with you about the weather being horrible because it dictates my mood as well, but I also appreciate you acknowledging how horrific our election was.

I think its completely normal to question your role or idea of a role in the exspanse of all this chaos, but I always think of it like this; even doctors and scientists and activists need to come home and watch tv. People who do work that effects people on a greater level then most other people still need to decompress and relax and your content helps fill that role in the 'social ecosystem' (a silly term but super fitting). People need to look at art and find escape in order to get that energy back to go out and do the work to make peoples lives better. You help others help others~! Thank you for all you do~!!

Honestly, the thing that makes me most upset about the US election outcome is that I am hyperaware that the US is a very powerful country and that it will have impacts globally. When I voted, I voted not only for myself but for those who could not. Minors, international folks living in the US, incarcerated people, and those for whom life circumstances have gotten in the way of their ability to vote. It makes me mad that so many people /who live here/ don't get a say in the election. And yes, I also voted for those who don't live here but will be impacted by my country's politics. I don't think you shouldn't talk about this because you're Canadian. You're our neighbors. It impacts you too. Also because you have American friends. Also because you're capable of compassion for people in a different country than you. Also because it's your vlog and you can talk about whatever you want. No need to justify what you talk about, whether it's the weather OR US election outcomes. (because yes I also relate to the "why am I sad?? oh it's because it's so much darker out." We're just lil human beans tryna make a connection.)

Okay, so, I finally read Coup de Grace. I’m in the midst of writing my review and I had to come see what you had said about it (we tend to agree on a LOT). I 100% understand why you didn’t like it but, as someone who was in that very deep, dark, terrible place mentally (I’m doing so so well now. Honestly fantastic. Figured out a med combo that worked for me, worked on myself/triggers/coping skills etc., graduated from therapy (yay!)) I have a different view of it. (Ps. 100% NOT speaking for everyone who was/is in that dark place, we all have our own experiences!) I identified so highly with this book that, before the elevator, I cried. I cried for the MC. I cried for past me. I cried for others in that place. I cried for those who came out of it and those who didn’t. And I NEVER cry in books. You saw his 3 page descriptions as passionate and not genuine but I saw it as his brain taking him hostage in such a visceral way that it can feel impossible to claw your way out of those thoughts. I saw reviews that didn’t like the flowery language or the vocabulary the author used as it made them feel disconnected from the MC, but I think that was the point. I think you were supposed to feel isolated and lost and maybe a bit confused (and disconnected if you needed to pull up a dictionary every few sentences). I have thoughts on the ending but I don’t want to post spoilers here. Basically, I just wanted to say that I absolutely understand why the ratings and reviews of this book are all over the place and that I appreciate your view!!

Now that the weather is getting worse, you can try other forms of exercise. I love running but I don't even think to run in the rain, so on rainy days I usually do yoga or weight training. In winter, if it snowed and it's sunny, I go trekking (I don't run in the snow because its slippery). I think it's better to change the type of exercise you do than to let the one you like become a nuisance.
