When to DNF a book? I use the “Rule of 50” created by Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl. Nancy says, “Give a book 50 pages. When you get to the bottom of Page 50, ask yourself if you're really liking the book. If you are, of course, then great, keep on reading. But if you're not, then put it down and look for another.” There is an action figure based on Nancy Pearl (as you probably know) so her advice is worth listening to. 😁

I DNF frequently, I heard a professor once say you subtract your age from 100 and that is how many pages you need to read before you DNF, for example if you are 20, then you need to read 80 pages, but if you are 80 you only need to read 20 pages - I like it and I use it - I won't tell you how few pages I need to read.

Removing guilt also makes room for spontaneity and flexibility - and whim! Great video, like the new angle. I am currently reading Bibliomaniac by Robin Ince which is very heartwarming about his trips to various bookshops around the UK. I think in Jan my main aim is to set goals and intentions and try to tell people so I am accountable. I think that will motivate me. I also want to keep active and hack the happy hormones: serotonin-sun exposure/meditation/get out in nature, dopamine-self care/completing tasks, oxycontin-socialising/ physical touch/ playing with animals, endorphins-exercise/listening to music/watching a film/laughter. I can end up scrolling and not being present too. Not beating yourself up about not being productive is always tough but, I try to talk to myself like I am a close friend. Rather than the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. You deserve the compassion you give to others is something I am still learning.
@SavidgeReads9 ай бұрын
I think the angle is going to switch about dependent on the lighting, hahaha. It is all about the lighting, nice to change it up now and again though. Interesting about telling people your intentions to then be accountable, I don't know if intentions need accountability as then they become goals and resolutions and more rigid... leaning into the drill sergeant side of things more hahaha. I mean I put mine out in the internet just for a chat, if anyone tries to hold me to them other than myself, erm no thank you please hahaha.

I'm love/hate with DNF'ing books. It's hard being a completionist! Hardcovers are expensive in the U.S., so if I've invested a great deal of money into book-buying, I feel an obligation to continue on with them to the end. I don't have the luxury of getting a constant stream of free books from publishers, so our monetary investments are vastly different. I'll certainly donate books that I'm done reading, don't want to keep anymore, or lost interest in, and I get the "life's too short!" argument. One thing that helps me a great deal is doing the research beforehand and also using libraries, so I'm not buying too blindly. I fully know my reading tastes at this stage. I have to read the blurbs at all times lol! I know you always avoid that.
@SavidgeReads9 ай бұрын
I can understand if you’ve paid for something the desire to finish it. That’s why I don’t buy hardbacks very often, unless I’m fairly certain that I am going to read them and love them. It’s also why libraries are brilliant! Borrow and return, buy the paperback later if you love it.

I DNFed a hardcover book last week. It had a 50-cent sticker on it so I either found it at a yard sale or it was in a little free library. I am a big fan of used books. My town had a Goodwill Outlet open up last fall. I can’t wait to finish my read-what-I-own challenge in the next month so I can go back. Books were 59-cents per pound. Can’t be picky about only reading new releases or Murphy’s Law will have the customer ahead of you grabbing all the good ones.

My general life intentions for the year are very similar to yours, particularly concepts of intentionality (esp when and how I work vs relax), being more present with people, sometimes less is more. I think my only reading intention is to read more classics including some of the big ones like Count of Monte Cristo. I have so many books I want badly to read that I feel somewhat anxious about getting to them all, so big, densely-written books are hard for me to commit to. Have a great year - I'll be watching!
