Ooh we have an abundance of them. Well three but I don’t tend to film in the spare bedrooms or lounge (there’s two others that are concealed on the ground floor) I’ll see what I can do with the library though. Maybe the revamp will enable that a bit later in the year.

Well whenever the foxes are about I try and snap them and will carry on doing so. I’m still so cross I didn’t capture the hummingbird moth in the garden this summer, that was an incredible sight. This summer I would like to celebrate the joys of the garden more. I’m also now second in the queue for an allotment, so that could be some nature content too. Ooh and I have signed up to a walking group website so the first baby steps complete, pun intended. Ha.

I’d love updates on how you get on with these intentions and am really excited for your “reader’s year” vlog, which sounds amazing. And can I just say that, given our Slipper and Rose bond, you must must must watch Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. Both were absolute favorites from my childhood. Pure magic. Honestly!

When to DNF a book? I use the “Rule of 50” created by Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl. Nancy says, “Give a book 50 pages. When you get to the bottom of Page 50, ask yourself if you're really liking the book. If you are, of course, then great, keep on reading. But if you're not, then put it down and look for another.” There is an action figure based on Nancy Pearl (as you probably know) so her advice is worth listening to. 😁

Oh I know. I love Nancy Pearl. I had the pleasure of interviewing her for Turn Up For The Books. You can find the episode here www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0bv9dr6 My Grandad did 60 which is what I’m sticking with, no disrespect to the iconic Nancy.

Thanks so much for the link, Simon. I just listened to the Nancy Pearl segment of that episode. I DNF frequently, I heard a professor once say you subtract your age from 100 and that is how many pages you need to read before you DNF, for example if you are 20, then you need to read 80 pages, but if you are 80 you only need to read 20 pages - I like it and I use it - I won't tell you how few pages I need to read.

Hi Simon, I have done the same thing with my phone going down a rabbit hole for hours so you aren't alone on that. I like this new background its not as distracting as the one before. My intention because of budgetary constraint is to not pay full price for books. So I am trying to get all the books from my library. I'm only buying books when I cant find them at the library. I'm finding that hard because I like books to be in new condition I'm very picky about that.

It honestly makes me feel so happy to hear you wanting to focus on self-love this year. Also shifting the focus onto intentions as a way to be more gentle with yourself is so admirable. It might sound silly but we all know how easy it is to be hard on ourselves so it really is sth we actively have to circumvent. Removing guilt also makes room for spontaneity and flexibility - and whim! I hope you have an amazing year full of bookish delights and other treats throughout, Simon 🕺 I absolutely love how excited you are about the year ahead. Sounds brill to visit or revisit different places and I’d be happy to see whatever you want to show us - a walk, your garden, renovations, bits of work, travels, unhauls, bookish thoughts, etc. Your grandad was smart about that 60 pages in rule btw 🫶

Great video, like the new angle. I am currently reading Bibliomaniac by Robin Ince which is very heartwarming about his trips to various bookshops around the UK. I think in Jan my main aim is to set goals and intentions and try to tell people so I am accountable. I think that will motivate me. I also want to keep active and hack the happy hormones: serotonin-sun exposure/meditation/get out in nature, dopamine-self care/completing tasks, oxycontin-socialising/ physical touch/ playing with animals, endorphins-exercise/listening to music/watching a film/laughter. I can end up scrolling and not being present too. Not beating yourself up about not being productive is always tough but, I try to talk to myself like I am a close friend. Rather than the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. You deserve the compassion you give to others is something I am still learning.
@SavidgeReads
@SavidgeReads 9 ай бұрын
I think the angle is going to switch about dependent on the lighting, hahaha. It is all about the lighting, nice to change it up now and again though. Interesting about telling people your intentions to then be accountable, I don't know if intentions need accountability as then they become goals and resolutions and more rigid... leaning into the drill sergeant side of things more hahaha. I mean I put mine out in the internet just for a chat, if anyone tries to hold me to them other than myself, erm no thank you please hahaha.

Living in the Northern hemisphere with less daylight and weather often on the more miserable side January it is not for me personally to introduce resolutions. Bookish intentions: 1) along the other reading, read a book under 200 pages a week, make a preference from books in my collection (this one is from September 2023, and I keep it; so far I read incredible books I kept on shelves for months if not years). 2) unhaul old books that doesn’t appeal to me anymore (I put them into Little Libraries or sell on Pango). 3) Have a planned TBR every month (and it helps me to keep reading books that I own). 4) but do not judge myself for picking up (library, shop) a mood read from time to time. 5) buy LESS books! I am a European living in Africa and therefore its nonsense to read so much US literature. I'm love/hate with DNF'ing books. It's hard being a completionist! Hardcovers are expensive in the U.S., so if I've invested a great deal of money into book-buying, I feel an obligation to continue on with them to the end. I don't have the luxury of getting a constant stream of free books from publishers, so our monetary investments are vastly different. I'll certainly donate books that I'm done reading, don't want to keep anymore, or lost interest in, and I get the "life's too short!" argument. One thing that helps me a great deal is doing the research beforehand and also using libraries, so I'm not buying too blindly. I fully know my reading tastes at this stage. I have to read the blurbs at all times lol! I know you always avoid that.

I can understand if you’ve paid for something the desire to finish it. That’s why I don’t buy hardbacks very often, unless I’m fairly certain that I am going to read them and love them. It’s also why libraries are brilliant! Borrow and return, buy the paperback later if you love it.

I DNFed a hardcover book last week. It had a 50-cent sticker on it so I either found it at a yard sale or it was in a little free library. I am a big fan of used books. My town had a Goodwill Outlet open up last fall. I can’t wait to finish my read-what-I-own challenge in the next month so I can go back. Books were 59-cents per pound. Can’t be picky about only reading new releases or Murphy’s Law will have the customer ahead of you grabbing all the good ones.

I’ve also not seen The Sound of Music, but I don’t think it’s a requirement for Lesbian Club so I’m okay. Excellent intentions for the year especially doing nothing, that’s definitely underrated 😊

Underrated yet weirdly comes with so much guilt. Are you sure about Lesbian Club… I’ve heard rumour there’s a cult following for The Sound of Music there too 🤣🤣🤣

My general life intentions for the year are very similar to yours, particularly concepts of intentionality (esp when and how I work vs relax), being more present with people, sometimes less is more. I think my only reading intention is to read more classics including some of the big ones like Count of Monte Cristo. I have so many books I want badly to read that I feel somewhat anxious about getting to them all, so big, densely-written books are hard for me to commit to. Have a great year - I'll be watching! BTW, how can you have not seen Sound of Music? I'm not gay (I had never thought of it particularly as gay fare, although I suppose I can see that), but I've seen it at least 3-4 times!

I always think I want to try a classic and then don’t once I have. Hahaha. I’m very contrary though, hope you enjoy the ones you’ve head to. Oh and anything Julie Andrew’s is gay culture, facts are facts. Hahaha.

Simon apologies if you have covered this already but will you still keep dnf’d books on your shelves ? ❤

It depends. If it’s a DNF forever then no. If it’s a DNF for now then probably. Will probably change from book to book. Maybe. Lol.

Should have also added that the literary and other chemistry between Louise and yourself is a joy to watch.

Obviously I was listening to every word you said, but I was also looking at one of the books on your shelves. The book next to Sankofa; does that have a snake on the spine? If so, would you mind sharing the title for inspo? 😊

Aha. That is a ribbon. Lol. It’s The Disappearance Boy by Neil Bartlett. I can see where you would get the snakey vibes from though. Alas no 🐍
