I so was not expecting this, but I’m honestly honored you chose to read a book from my list! And I’m in good company, too! I’m so glad you enjoyed A Heart in a Body. ❤️ I was also kind of blindsided by how much I loved it. It’s definitely very character-driven, which I think is why I loved it so much! And YES about Annabelle’s grandpa. Ahhh, I’m just so happy you enjoyed, and even more happy it was your first read of the year! 💖💖💖 I also loooooved Blanca y Roja, so I’m glad you liked that one, too! Based on your description of the Humans, I think you will like Eleanor Oliphant if you haven't read it already. It has similar elements but is much sadder and definitely not sci fi. I'm not sure I'm selling it well, but it is absolutely stunning, I tried not to be affected by the hype and still I was blown away!

Yay! So glad that you liked Reign of the Fallen. It was one of my favorite fantasy books in 2017 (arc copy) but I don't see a lot of people talking about it. The 2nd book just came out & I'm so excited to read it (apparently it's a duology... which I didn't know. I kind of thought it would be a longer series).

If you like themes of mental health/well being and substance abuse in fantasy you should try The Human Cycle by J. D. Estrada. The second one has solving drug dealing and substance abuse as a focus (and the way the drugs are created, that's just disturbing and oh man the plot twist). The series isn't YA though, and has graphic elements in it (and a nicely woven in criticism of racism). It's mostly paranormal, but literally every paranormal creature in there has a twist to it (this includes God, who's here considered a paranormal creature). It's great, it's one of my fave series of all time :D
