I have been crocheting/knitting for 60 years, but I haven't the past 5 years. I got a crochet pattern book at the library and was shocked when I saw the new way of reading "diagramed" instructions.". I had no idea how to do that. Your video is EXCELLENT. Thank you, thank you. Now I can also teach my granddaughters how to read them.

During the Corona Virus quarantine, I promised myself to learn how to read crochet patterns with symbols. You made it so easy. By the time you finished, I didn't have one question. Now I'm going to look for an easy pattern and try it. Thank you for your time and effort and easy teaching style. May God keep you safe.

This video was so wonderful! I learned to crochet using crochet charts. I still have a few copies of Crochet Fantasy magazines from1985 and 1986. These magazines had both the written instructions, which I rarely used, and the charts for the patterns. When I started crocheting again I had difficulty reading patterns because, in many cases, charts were not included, only the written patterns. It was like decoding a secret message. I can now read and write patterns using this "code." I agree with you when you say that the chart makes following a pattern so much easier. I am a visual learner. Watching your video was such a great way to refresh my old chart reading skills. Your explanation of the symbols was so easy to follow I know It must have helped many to understand crochet charts much better. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making this video.

Thank you so very much for this video. I am still trying not to quit crocheting after 6 months because even if I know the basic stitches, I get totally discombobulated trying to follow the written patterns, really totally lost. I am 73 and although my mother tried to teach me several times I just could not pay attention, get into it. I’m glad I recently found out that I’m autistic AND have ADHD which basically explained my life! My autistic “special thing” all my life has been researching and learning, even though I was probably never really going to use whatever that specific knowledge was. I really like crochet but I after I got the basics I tried to make things ,if I have a video tutorial and play it multiple times until I memorize it. So I think this will be my hobby for hopefully a long time after now “ getting” how to read the chart or diagram and forget reading the pattern. I felt so dumb and frustrated getting lost in the pattern. So thanks again and please forgive the long boring “rant”.

I have been crocheting since 2011 and never tried to learn to read chats until just now (needed to know for a pattern). I wish I had tried to learn before because this seems to make it easier! Thank you for your detailed explanation.

You are A-M-A-Z-I-NG!!! I can NOT Thank You ENOUGH! I have been watching "how to read Crochet Charts" videos ALL DAY, and I swear, none of them made any sense until I watched yours!! It's like you are the ONLY person out in KZbin-Land who took the time to explain the charts at a beginner's level, whereas everyone else was trying to sound all hoity-toity, "I know more than you do", yadda, yadda, yadda... 🙄 I just found you, so I am going to see what tutorials you have to offer! I am praying that you are offering what I'm needing! Thank You again SO MUCH! Consider me a Subscriber-For-Life!!! 💕

My biggest problem is where to start, and in some cases where to go next when following a mess of symbols. Your chart is nice and obvious as you say, but some I have seen are just a big mess with no starting point. I try to work them out in my head but end up baffled. How do you handle rows when they don't actually indicate where the row is going, it seems to have several paths it could follow. This post is as hard to understand as the patterns I try to read, hope you can grasp what I mean.Also would it be clearer if I actually crocheted instead of trying to understand it mentally. Thanks for a great tutorial, I have subscribed and liked.

Iryna Boehland Yes, but that is what is so wonderful. Without even knowing the name of the stitch you know what to do when you see the capital T with the slash on it. In the UK that would be a Treble but in US it is a Double crochet ;)

This is so helpful, and I just wonder if there is a similar video for making a chart from written directions. I'm a bit dyslexic when it comes to reading patterns and sometimes don't catch an error until I'm rows and rows into a project. I find that when I have both the chart and the pattern it is easier to double check my work. I'm really tired of making a project even after a swatch, that I still have to pull apart because I didn't 'see' it right. Right now I'm working on a dragonfly pattern and just want to transpose the written directions into a chart. Any suggestions?

judy HI judy, If you look at the chart...do you see the orange line showing the repeat section? When your piece gets larger and larger you will repeat the repeat section...just like you do when you are working with the words and you see * then a repeat from * until... :-) I hope that helps.

As you say that with each row ,to turn the work .is it important to go that way or to carry on without turning? Is there a difference in both ...I'm actually confused as I'm a beginner . Btw, you are concise and you are the best! Keep up the good work.
@MarlyBird6 жыл бұрын
If you are working on a project that requires you to turn the work then you would do that and read the pattern in a snake like motion. If you’re working in the round you would read the pattern from right to left, then start at the right again for the second row. Does that help?
