I cackled when the lights started flickering. 😂 Very dramatic. Reminded me of something my partner and I do called Horror Movie Mode. When something happens we can't explain that looks like a stereotypical start to a horror movie, we pretend like we're in a horror movie and do all of the things that survivors do and avoid the things victims do. It's a whole ride.

I actually really liked the use of mental illness in The Silent Patient. As someone with BPD, it dealt pretty well with the stigma around the disorder and it didn't feel as exploitative as a lot of thriller/horror books which feature mental illness do.

@@oliviareadsalatte It's not trying to be BPD representation, as in trying to show what it is like to live with BPD but I liked the conversation on the stigma. BPD is one of the most stigmatized mental illnesses out there. We're made out to be master manipulators, unable to actually hold healthy relationships and taking advantage of everyone we come by. When I first started reading the book, I was really scared that the author was playing into those stereotypes by throwing around that diagnosis, but actually using the stigma as a plot point? That's clever. I like that.

@@mlleariane6667 I think BPD and Schizophrenia are the 2 I’ve seen where they’re utilized in an exploitative and stereotypical way in thrillers, which is why I was nervous about this one too. I’m so glad to hear it wasn’t the case though and thank you so much for taking the time to let me know! I’m going to give it another go, but through this lens. I think I’ll enjoy it more, so thank you again for that!
