reading KU fantasy romance for a week

I love my kindle unlimited subscription and want to take more advantage of it so I spent the week reading romantasy!

Okay I've definitely thought about this before - in any other genre, I am OK with unlikeable characters. But in romance books, I have to really like at least one of the main characters. This was a fun video - I just got a kindle unlimited subscription last month for the first time when I was in the mood for some romantasy books! I will probably skip A Ship of Bones and Teeth (not the biggest Little Mermaid fan) and I DNFed House of Beating Wings (I wasn't a fan of Fallon and it was too long) but Fear the Flames sounds interesting! The best books I've read from KU in the last month were the two books in the Crowns of Nyaxia series (starts with The Serpent and the Wings of Night) and The Crown of Oaths and Curses which has the most extreme version of enemies-to-lovers I've ever read (they absolutely loathe each other).

I think I heard that KU pays authors by the pages read, which perhaps encourages authors to make books longer than they need to be

I read romance for the relationship and the emotions that it evokes in me so I have to believe in the couple. It certainly helpes if I find the mmc attractive (it makes me love a book instead of simply liking it) but it is not strictly necessary. As a teenager I used to only read ya fantasy (with a romance subplot) and so the idea of fantasy romance is very enticing to me but at the same time I have read so many iterations of the same plot/relationship dynamic that I just get bored by it. Also nowadays I struggle to find adult fantasy romances that don't feel like ya with one or two spicy scenes added onto it.

I agree--I think romance is such a character-driven genre that if you feel nothing for the characters, you really struggle.

Have to admit me and the Amazon algorithm for Kindle Unlimited have fallen out. I signed up again briefly but I get fed up of wading through romance I hate and abandon to find something I actually like. I partly blame EL James, Christian Grey is not my vibe I haven't read it or bought it from Amazon but a couple of abandoned books had some very dodgy suggestions about 'choking' which I think is a dangerous trend to even suggest. I prefer something that works against romantic tropes. I did enjoy 'Chick Magnet' by Emma Barry because there's a defusing rather than escalating incident (I don't want some guy to beat someone up for me!) a hero who's life is not going entirely well (not the multi billionaire) and a brief but not triggering look at mental health. I also appreciated 'The Year We Fell Down' by Elle Kennedy as the heroine has had a serious accident before college, I don't think I've read a romance with a girl in a wheelchair before. Both will have some explicit scenes though so be warned.
