This is a really wise insight. Honestly you just got at the crux of what makes this essay (and college admissions in general) feel so huge. Trying to promote yourself when you still aren’t even sure who you are (or where you want to go or what you might want to do when you get there). Thank you by the way💛 I would say just take it step by step, and along the way you’ll find that you’ve actually learned a lot about yourself

lol i love how it’s a college advice video that doesn’t go over “hacks,” but rather ACTUALLY opens your eyes on what writing an essay about yourself means and needs !!! i really loved how you kept reminding that we shouldn’t dilute ourselves with the thoughts and ideas and essays others may be writing/have written. With so many edgy essays having made headlines or being thrown in our faces it becomes so difficult to focus on authenticity and writing how you yourself would want to write, and even makes it hard to talk about things that actually = you! And your essay is crazy!!! I was able to see (past) you in it as soon as you brought up worrying about if the flamenco dancer’s passion was too much!! That itself is creative- to show how our perspective and thoughts on things are unique and reflective of our own deepest thoughts, and looking into times we’ve been worried about something or happy or anything can convey who we really are too!

Beautiful essay, as always so thoughtful and in depth. I agree with Julia, in high school you have to stay as true to yourself as possible. Easier said than done when you are competing and comparing yourself with other people in your class. But really write what represents you in the best light. Being yourself will save you from going down a path you pretend to love.

I never watched any of these until this week (orientation at my ivy) but lots of people were talking about and sort of wondering what got them in… what about their essay “worked” and it made me curious about it as well. I completed my app and essay with days to spare for the deadline and this was because I originally had no plans to apply for an ivy. But it was suggested so I gave it a go. I wrote my essay in one sitting and edited it for length and clarity over two days and sent it off to do its job. I think it was good… at least I was satisfied with it. I didn’t have any idea what to write about but I researched the school and decided to tell them why I was the perfect candidate based on the culture of the institution. I started with stating I was what they were looking for essentially. Talked about how two of my educators inspired me and changed the trajectory of my life as a student and then talked about the university and how I was a good fit and hoped they’d let me come and study there. I’m a songwriter so I’m used to making few words paint a larger picture. But basically I told them I love to learn, I hear they have dedicated educators and that I think they should let me come learn there. 🤷🏽♀️ I know my recommendations were great as well. I mean, I had the right credentials and felt the school was a good fit for me and just told them that. 🤷🏽♀️ I think all things bring equal, many ppl have the right credentials to get in, schools are not just looking for people ticking off boxes…. If who you are is the right fit and it comes through in your essay, that’s probably the best way to go.

This was amazing! I only wish I could write an essay as creative and profound as yours. How long did this essay take you to write? If others helped you proofread/gave you advice on it, who did you ask? Thank you so much!
@dreammeaname4 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you so much!💛 My first draft was actually only a reflection on the dancer and weaver with no mention of myself at all! I wrote it pretty quickly, putting together ideas over a few days. It had been years since I visited those countries and it was almost like I had all those details and memories brewing in my mind for all that time, so once I started writing about them, I couldn’t stop. Sounds melodramatic but it’s true! Try to think of any moments or experiences in your life that make you feel like that. Your essay will write itself that way. About feedback - I think you have to ask for advice from people who actually care and you know don’t have any interest in being fake with you. I don’t think your peers in HS are the best to ask because 1) they are also trying to figure it out, and 2) the truth is nobody in your class wants you to have a better essay than them. You can’t even blame them. Like I said, college admissions is a stressful time and everybody is trying to figure it out themselves. People would rather put genuine critical thinking towards their own piece instead of yours. I had friends compliment my writing and tell me they liked it, but that would be the end of the conversation. It was nice to hear, but nothing constructive, and I would walk away feeling like there weren’t any ways to improve. (Spoiler: There were. Many.) If you have a fine relationship with your teacher, I recommend asking them to proofread and kindly let them know that you really do want their honest thoughts and revisions. Surprise them - show them that you truly care and value their input. Thank them for their time in advance. Now, I don’t know if your family is as blunt as mine is, but it was only when I asked my mom for her advice that someone actually gave me honest and constructive feedback that I could work with. She told me it was a cool short story, but not a college essay. I pushed back in the beginning, but eventually I realized she was right. That’s when I had to do the hard work of cutting out all the descriptive details that I could do without and instead grounding everything I wanted to say in my own life. That is what it means to write about yourself - mining for the meaning in your experiences. You only have 650 words after all, so make sure you strike a balance between showing 1) what happened and 2) what it meant. From start to finish, I would say I made changes and punched it around for over a month.
