True, you’ll be illegible for many scholarships if you don’t apply by tonight But also if your essay quality is too low then you might not get in, making the scholarships argument meaningless anyways 😂

how different are the early and regular applications? i’ve heard from a handful of people saying that early applications would be better in boosting your chances for acceptance, however does it really make much of a difference to do early applications?
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t necessarily say it helps with your odds, it’s just better to have your options cleared up ASAP so you can make a more informed choice. As long as you’re not rushing through your application, I would recommend applying early!Personally, I simply did early applications because I wanted to get in early and not have to worry for months lol

In general, I recommend starting off with a hook / thesis. After that is the body of your essay, ideally you have 2 - 3 main supporting points for that thesis. And then end with a good conclusion line or two that sums up your points and highlight how they've helped build your skills

hey Hayden, For the 3rd question I took a slight bit approach. I showed I don't know myself yet. I am curious learner who keeps learning about himself everyday. Do you think this approach is fine or should I stop beating around the bush. Your opinion is highly appreciated
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC 10 күн бұрын
Are you talking about the questions where they ask you how the people around you describe you, and what you're most proud of? For this one, I wouldn't recommend your approach. Curious learner is a good point to touch on, but ultimately don't say you don't know yourself, especially when you literally do! You're a curious learner that thinks outside of the box, so that could be how the people around you describe you.

Hello Mr. Hayden! If possible, I was hoping to get your insight on how I can improve my chance to get into UBC (van) Faculty of Science. I have experience in certain leadership roles, as well as a variety of creative avenues but no extra/co-curriculars in sports/ athletics, and I'm worried it will impact my Personal profile negatively. I'm currently taking the IB Diploma Programme in grade 12, my final grades from the previous Gr 11 year are: HL English: 7 (100%) HL Physics: 5 (93%) HL Chemistry: 5 (93%) SL AA Math: 6 (95%) SL French: 5 (88%) SL History: 6 (95%) IB: 34, Avg: 94% My PGs going into gr12 are roughly the same, with french being predicted higher and physics lower. My actual grade 12 predicted grades have yet to be released, but i'm not confident in maintaining my English, French and Physics until end of Feb when UBC collects PGs, I'm worried (with the lack of athletics on my Personal Profile) how much my grades can fluctuate and still be able to fit comfortably in the competitive range! Thank you in advance for the help!!
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC Ай бұрын
I don't believe sports activities is really needed, your experiences sounds good enough for Personal Profile. IB 34 is slightly lower than what would be considered comfortable, but as long as your personal profile is written well enough I think you still have a good chance, good luck!

I would say it depends on your band program. If you spend time outside of class doing band practises or performances, then yea I think it counts!

Should the personal profile be written in a specific point of view? Ex: first person, third person
@HaydenChanUBC

Definitely first person! You wanna talk about your experiences and what you’ve learned, and it’ll sound much more sincere if you do it in first person

hello hayden! thank you so much for this video, it helped me a lot for figuring out what i want to write on my personal profile. i was wondering, for the fifth question, do you think it’ll be worth it to write down an activity where i didn’t take any leadership roles/made any significant accomplishments in? I love my job as a cashier because of the socialization, but i’m afraid there isn’t anything else to write about it :(( awesome video man, i wish you lots of success in life!

Hello! Thanks for the super helpful tips. I got a really terrible mark in culinary arts 11 that is dragging down my average. Without it, I have an average of about 95%. Will UBC still consider it and will it affect my academic profile?
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC Ай бұрын
If your average without it is 95, I would assume with it you still have around 90, which is already good enough Also, UBC focus on relevant courses, so as long as you’re not applying for something related to food, you should be fine

Hey! I’m currently a twelfth grade student, and I have a couple questions regarding the application process for UBC. For my first question, I’m wondering how important are grade 11 marks in considering acceptance? I didn’t do to well in eleventh grade, receiving around a 70-80% average in most my IB classes. I hope to increase my average this year, but I’m worried that my previous grades will be an obstacle. Furthermore, regarding the personal profile, how important are having extracurriculars? I’m a bit hesitant as I don’t think I have any extracurriculars that I’ve done in the past couple years that I can use to be successful in answering the questions. I was wondering if you know any extracurriculars I can start building now, along with any advice you have on someone in my position. Thanks, and sorry for the long questions!
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC 2 ай бұрын
Regarding grade 11 marks, it's important because when you apply, you probably will only have half your grade 12 marks. Honestly tho, I would recommend you to just look forward, cause you can't change that grade 11 mark anymore, so focus on making your grade 12 mark as good as possible. For extracurriculars, do you have school clubs or sports teams you could join? Those are probably the simplest, but alternative options could be a part-time job or community/volunteer opportunities.

@@HaydenChanUBCAh okay, thanks! And also, do they look at ALL your grade 11 marks, or just the courses that are required for a program (ex. A program requires chem 20 and Physics 20)

@@HaydenChanUBC hi hayden! I have a question.. i am trying to apply to ubc kin but last year’s grade is giving me so much stress. (last year i took these courses) 83 on first ppls 12 and 87 in bio12.. Ive been watching some other videos but people are recommending to retake courses that are under 90s.. however its already too late, nearly a month left b4 deadline for early. My avg was 91.5 in gr11 (including the bio&socials, 3 sciences and pre calc11). Im pretty sure they look at gr11 marks for early admissions which I am very nervous ill get rejected instantly no matter how good i write the apps, even if i have lots of extracurriculars.. but this yr im taking only physics and ap calc (recommended by a ubc kin student) and having an avg of 96. will that be able to cover up the rly low mark? tho im concerned about bio 😭😭 bio is important for kin 😱😱 any opinions..?

is it actually 50/50 between grades and personal profile? Currently planning to apply to UBC this upcoming november and my grades are pretty good being around 88-95% average but currently my pre calc 12 is not doing as well as the other classes only being at an 84%. If they actually do weigh it 50/50 say I wasn't able to bump my pre calc 12 grade up but my personal profile was really well made, would they accept me over someone who had a poorly written personal profile but better grades? sorry for the long question been genuinely curious on how they weigh this 😅 Thanks for the vid!
@HaydenChanUBC
@HaydenChanUBC 2 ай бұрын
I have two answers to this. Firstly, I think it honestly depends on the admission officer, as it is ultimately a human being's decision that will lead to an acceptance or rejection decision. I believe that a compelling personal profile could make a similar impact to amazing grades on a transcript. A lot of people could have good grades, but an interesting life experience is what could set you apart from the competition. I also think that ultimately, all you can do is do your best. In my opinion, believing that it's equal weighting allows you to put the best foot forward so that you're taking both parts of your application seriously. Also, thinking about the odds for other people with better grades but a worse personal profile is honestly a waste of your mental energy, and I would advise against thinking about that since that does nothing to improve your own situation. Instead, focusing on improving your own application is a much better approach.
@HaydenChanUBC

TLDR: - 50/50? I think depends on the admission officer - just try your best, and don't worry too much - Focus on yourself and improving your application! Good luck!
