Reading & Northern “Opening Day” at Jim Thorpe, PA. 4/6/24

This brief video captured some of the diesel action on the Reading & Northern at the beautiful town of Jim Thorpe, Pa. This is the first day of their operating season for 2024. You will see the Lehigh Gorge train as well as the Inaugural return departure from here to the new Pittston station outside Scranton. As a bonus we will see the Budd RDC departing for Reading Outer on its return trip. The action at Jim Thorpe was intense and entertaining and their immaculate, resplendent diesel locomotives put on a good show. You will also see the eclectic mix of passenger equipment that they have with many heritages. It was a great railfan and family outing there that day. Everyone was happy. My wife and the grandkids went shopping, and I had a great experience railfanning. We had a great dinner together afterwards at Molly McGuire’s Irish Pub.

Thanks for another great video. The Reading and Northern is a first class operation. I visited Jim Thorpe several times but never got to ride one of their trains. You picked the right day to be there. They have added many different routes over the years so you can see many different parts of their railroad and the towns they serve.

This railroad is quite scenic. My only complaint is that it’s operated by diesel engines, not steam engines like most railroad museums. There’s something romantic about steam engines.
