There is tremendous evolution for several of the characters...just over multiple books. Also, there were characters that died in the final book that I certainly cared about and grieved. Maas does seem to have a tendency to let all or most of the mains walk away though like in her Wings and Ruin from ACOTAR. I really enjoyed that her newer Crescent City series has a main character that is deceased from the beginning so at least there's major loss built-in and therefore has a slightly more believable feeling to me.

I remember reading Heir of Fire and being really excited that Aelin and Rowan were such good friends. Then I read the next book and I realised it was all supposed to be interpreted romantically. I am too ace for her books I swear XD The flip between 1-3 and 4-7 is huge, it's practically a different series after that point. As someone who read the version of this back in the days of fictionpress online, I never really got over that shift. And that ending was just so lackluster. By the time I was reading the last book I was also much more aware of the problematic elements in her work. Actually I think my least favourite thing she ever wrote was when the guys can smell when the girl is on her period. That scene was traumatizing. I would also like to veto the word 'mate' thank you kindly.

Exactly my thoughts! I loved the first 4-5 books, but after that the shift in style was a lot more obvious, and I hate the concept behind ‘mates.’ Honestly I feel like after she wrote a court of thorns and roses (and I don’t like that series), she changed how she wrote throne of glass. I honestly feel like her writing style has progressively gotten worse, not better 😅 I was also traumatized with that period scene too. I freaking hate mates. It’s so animalistic, and takes away from people actually falling in love. I’m not super into romance to begin with, but love is more then just a physical relationship…

As another ace person I’m also too ace for her books and definitely agree about the ending it’s a weird series and there are definitely problematic bits but still decently interesting at some points. Also 100% agree about the smelling periods thing it is incredibly disturbing.

I never noticed how confusing it is that aelin is often interchangeably referred to as a queen/princess depending on the vibe lol. Sjm loves to refer to people by vague titles! The series does go through a big tone shift in book 3 where we start to meet a lot of the characters in KoA, like Manon, Rowan, and Aedion.

The Throne of Glass series was actually never meant to by YA. SJM even said that they are not young adult books, but because the main character is 17 in the first book, the publisher didn't want to put them in the adult section. They are the reason we have the new adult "genre," because they aren't quite adult, but they aren't young adult either.

I love this series, the thing is, the first 2 books are a completly different story than the rest of the books, the tone, plot and literally every thing feel different. Thats why everybody ssays the series takes a turn on the 3rd book. (The 3rd book is a confort read of mine i love it)

I loved Kingdom of Ash! When you said nobody died, my tears of ToG past came back to argue😂 I enjoyed how the last book went into Aelin's trauma a bit. Every time she said she was tired my heart ached for her since she legitimately was carrying the fate of the world and when someone else tried to help (Dorian) and people got mad, I'm like "WTF?????" But yeah! Rhys and Feyre were seen and I believe Crescent City was seen when Aelin describes the skyscrapers and lights next to a river!

Honestly, this is probably the best way to read this series. You just got confusion instead of frustration, which at least was more fun for us to watch :D I loved your confusion about who Aelin was. Also, I was definitely annoyed that more people didn't die in the last book.

if i had to pick any series to confuse someone more by reading the first and last it would be ToG! It's my favourite series of all time and even I have a hard time giving a synopsis because by the end of book 2 the entire plot shifts, there's the big Celeana is Aelin thing and most of characters get added in the 3rd book. If you read ALL of them you see wonderful world building, plot development and character growth. hysterical to watch though, you just really started on extreme mode.

Your confusion over KoA was hilarious! But while most series absolutely should be read in order, I have no idea why more series don’t include a “previously in this series” recap. TV shows do it, and they’re not disincentivizing you from watching the full series for context. I’ve only seen it a couple times, but I think it will help, especially since there’s a big problem with people not buying series until they’re complete, at least partially due to this issue.

I love the Pages & Co. series cause at the start of each book there's a "Previously on" section, which you can choose to read or skip depending. I think when a series takes so long to come out, and people haven't read the previous one in like a year, a refresher would be so helpful.

What I probably love the most about this series is that it turned out SO different to what I anticipated. I still have to read acotar and cc but SJM really did a great job there, especially if you keep in mind that she spent about 10 or more years on this series! I have binge reading all s.j.m. books the last couple of weeks. I started with ACOTAR, then CC and ended with this. My thoughts are swirling after looking for clues and connections to the full picture of the Maasverse. Like, are Throne of glass the past and crescent city the future in the same world? When did the first cross over from other worlds happened? Is Valg the same as Asteri/Daglan? Where does the Asteri Horses comes from? So many unanswered questions. ...also funny...I have a huge book-hangover from ACOTAR and Rhysand, and its still not entirely over after reading CC and TOG. Its like 11 books after reading ACOSF and I still want more ACOTAR.😅😂

There are a lot of things in book 1. Like in book one you learn everything about Erawan and the wyrdkeys and that essentially is the plot that carries you through to the end. You also learn about Elena and Gavin in book 1 which is instrumental in why things are happening the way they do happen later on in the series. The series is really well plotted, (well written, tho? not really). But theres a lot in book 1 and book 2 specifically that really set the ground work for the series. I think people exaggerate when they say books 1-3 and 4-7 are way different books, the books very clearly build on each other, the scope just grows immensely lmao.

I somehow read all of this disaster of a series- although thinking back on it I might have stopped halfway through the last book because I stopped caring that much aksknsbs. This was both the best and worst series to do this with, because I remember thinking that this series has one of the worst cases of the world expanding so quickly as you go that the first book becomes unrecognizable. The first love triangle ceasing to matter and the main characters name literally changing really prove that. This’ll be fun.
