This is the right kick to finally pick up Tomb of Sand. I saw the author and translator at the Edinburgh Book Festival last year and they made me fall in love with how they worked together and what they had to seek to find balance between meaning and sound. It was wonderful.

A gorgeous vlog, as always, thank you ❤️ Tomb of sand reminds me of the swan book by Alexis Wright in how you described it. I live Toni M. She needs very careful and slow reading to really appreciate her. I loved buddy reading Beloved earlier this year as we picked the text apart and it was a rich experience. If never thought of making crumpets either! Xx

Hey Jen, thanks as always for these reading vlogs, I find them so enjoyable and calming. Re. the crumpets :) I have gotten into them as well recently they work really well to use up souerdough discard, what I have been doing is just using my frying smallest pan (it is very small) to make one huge crumpet since i am also lacking the molds... ;) thanks for the idea with the cookie cutters! Wishing you a lovely day

I loved Sula back when I read it. She writes like no other. Also, about Tomb of Sand rambling, I think she was trying to reiterate the culture of rambling that’s rife among the cultural group she’s based her characters on. I loved it because I could imagine family and relatives being exactly that.

Tomb of Sand was my favorite book of last year. Daisy did such a wonderful job with the translation, like the English reads as if you were reading Hindi. I loved it so much because of the familiarity not just in place and family system, but in language as well. I really do hope you love it.

17:00 I just looked up the differences between pancakes, crumpets, and pikelets: crumpets look like they'd be called an "English muffin" here in the USA, and a pikelet is something between a pancake and a crumpet? Also, loving the cute summer look with your hair up, that red and white blouse or dress, and your purple nails. ❤

Love your vlogs Jen, crumpets, mmm, you made me hungry and that lovely strawberry cake concoction looked amazing! Hope you and your friend enjoyed! Hope Mr M doesn't mind Lola sleeping on his garden beds, such a sweety. The Heath looks like a marvelous place to walk on an afternoon. I have the impression from Lauren of Laurenandthebooks and her David that the UK summer is quite warm at the moment so hope you can all stay cool, we are in Winter and it has been very chilly here (Australia-Melbourne), there's ice and snow on 'thems' mountains, definitely! The book 'Employees' glad you liked so much, but I'm not sure. The AI content in novels sort of freaks me out, I think I've seen too many AI/Robot take over movies, don't like them! "Tomb of Sand' sounds very interesting, I'm wondering if I can tackle the depth and length of it. Might make it tbr and wait a bit for the idea to settle. Thank you so much for the wonderful time you gave to the vlog, I love just relaxing with a coffee and watching the videos.

i remember a time when neightbours put out a wooden box on the street and put books they have read so that other read it again. I would be great if on national book day to remind people about this or even just talk to neightbours and ask to exchange books. As we face the uncertain cost of living it would be great if people could exhange books again, not just with friends family but the neighbourhook. Some of my best reading is thanks to Jen campell and other book tubers.

You! You are my favorite booktuber! I noticed you were using gluten-free baking soda when making the crumpets. Did you also use gluten-free flour? I have celiac and am wondering if I can follow the recipe as is using my cup-for-cup? Cooking aside, I decided to order The Employees based on your review because I know if you loved it, I probably will as well.

I didn’t, I’m afraid, so can’t comment on whether it works for those (I have the gluten free baking powder as my mother-in-law is celiac so often bake gluten free things, just not this time). I can attest that the raspberry, yoghurt and honey cake is wonderful gluten free, though ☺️ www.you.co.uk/benjamina-ebuehi-raspberry-yogurt-honey-cake-recipe/

I wonder how much is down to page spacing and font size - fascinating, though. Some languages are just like that; the German editions of my books are so much longer than the English ones, just because German words are longer. xx

Dear Jen, is it too late to submit a request for a book recommendation? 😇 I know you asked on Insta, but I missed that! If this is the completely wrong place, ignore me. Otherwise: My boyfriend wants a science fiction classic that is not too long, has spaceships in it and is not written by Ursula K. le Guin (he knows most of those already). And I am lost 😂 🙏 Thanks so much for everything, a big fan sends love from Germany ❤

Classic sci-fi is not really my wheelhouse I’m afraid. My favourite spaceship sci-fi would be The Book of Strange New Things (mainly set on a planet rather than within a spaceship but same vibes), however that’s not a short book! Perhaps a video like this would be more useful: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmOreGWDeauSebs&pp=ygUZQmVzdCBjbGFzc2ljIHNjaSBmaSBib29rcw%3D%3D (I don’t know that channel but it popped up in a search for books on this topic) x
