Today, I am reading the common application essay that got me into NYUAD. I recently graduated from college and moved back to London and I understand the stress of college application season. Firstly, of course, the common application essay is only one part of the admission process and it is not the only thing that got me a scholarship. However, it is a very significant part! As an international student, I know it was seriously competitive to gain admission to top US schools during my application cycle and sooooo....I hope this video can help anyone who is applying for college this year. All the best!!!

Hi, I absolutely love your content and your insights are always so valuable! Would you consider sharing your thoughts on the supplemental essay question for NYUAD? It could be incredibly helpful for those of us navigating through similar experiences. No pressure, of course! Just throwing it out there as a suggestion. Keep up the amazing work!

Heyy! Thank you for the love, really appreciate your comment. I believe the only supplement when I applied was “Why NYUAD?” And I would suggest for that one to really understand what makes NYUAD stand out to you over NYU or NYU Shanghai. Get real specific on the courses, core curriculum, global opportunities, you could even mention a professor you researched and how you would like to take a class with them/ support them on their work. I could try to publish a video but with the deadline creeping in, it might be a little tough. Regardless, I hope these tips help! Wishing you the best of luck, you got this💃🏽

Hello! I have so many questions). Do you think it may be harder or easier to get into certain majors compared to others? And would the things that they access you on, change depending on your chosen major? For example, would they focus more on your grades in stem subjects if you are applying for an engineering degree? And how much does your IELTS score matter? I have a band 8.0, with 7.0 minimum per section. Is there any point in trying to retake and increase that score? And does an sat score help in any way, if I have one above 1500?
@ladyashong
@ladyashong 9 ай бұрын
Hey, the majors don’t matter at all in my opinion. Remember you are applying to a liberal arts school and so you pretty much decide on your final major in your sophomore year. Saying that, if you have a inkling to do engineering, you might want to explore that i your first year just because it may be difficult to transition into it later if you don’t start early. No, the assessment doesn’t change base on your major. They are looking at the application holistically and so pretty much if you are a right fit by looking at your common application essay, your extracurricular, teacher reference, grades and your overall application. Grades is a small part of the review, but of course you should have strong grades tho. I didn’t take the IELTS because I was taught in a British curriculum and so you would want to check that out. I think you just need to pass the test. On SAT, if your score is that high it would help your application. I would recommend to include it but again, especially for NYUAD, test scores and grades are only a fraction of the overall review. Hope this helps!

Hey, I've a question. I'm an international student and applying to NYUAD. All other parts of my application is above average except my SAT. I've strong rec letters, outstanding ECs, and well written personal statement. I've failef my SAT exams twice, despite the amount of hard work I put into them. So, do you think that it is not possible to get into NYUAD without sat?
@ladyashong
@ladyashong 9 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for reaching out. NYUAD is test optional and so you do not have to submit your scores. I did not as I also struggled with standardised tests. I instead applied with my national exam predictions and then my final national exams (a-levels). They look at everything you apply with and so if you have strong national exam predictions along with a strong application in general, you are in a good position.

That's a good video, I wanted to know if it's possible to get into NYUAD with a full scholarship if I have a good percentage in my 12th grade but don't have many extracurriculars?
@ladyashong
@ladyashong 9 ай бұрын
Hey hey! I have worked for NYUAD admissions for about 3 years and from what I have seen, the selection is a very holistic process. They look at everything from grades, common application essays, teacher references, context of your school, and extracurriculars. You should aim to sell the extracurriculars that you do have or present them in unique ways that sell yourself. Think of these key words like “first”, “best” and “only”. For example if your were a prefect don’t say, “I was a prefect in my school for 4 years” instead I would say “Selected as 20 out of 250 applications to supervise class of 2000+”. That’s just one example tho. Another could be “First student to achieve (blank) award, as a result of 5% increase in punctuality in comparison to 300 students.”. I hope this helps!

@@ladyashong Thanks a lot for replying. Actually, the thing is I'm currently in 11th grade and when I was in 10th I got 2nd position in the Arabic calligraphy competition. So that's the only certificate I achieved in high school till now. I do have other certificates but they are from smaller grades. But I don't know if I can show them as the extracurriculars. So is it possible to show those certificates also in extracurriculars?
@ladyashong
@ladyashong 9 ай бұрын
Hey, of course no problem! The thing is you want to present your best extracurriculars which developed you as a person and which makes you stand out. If it’s more than 3 years old and you don’t particularly do it anymore then it might not be worth mentioning. That being said, you can start an extracurricular right now or go back to one you did in the past and try to make it have a greater impact or even influence you. Honestly, I think sometimes people think extracurriculars have to be these huge accomplishment but not really, babysitting is a very good one if you know how to sell it well or something like having a job at 16. That makes you stand out. You have a lot more extracurriculars than you think but you may need to look a bit further and try to market yourself well, remember the key words “first, best and only”. I for example went to a boxing club for 2 months and was able to say “first female boxer to join x gym, and supporting 20 kids each weekend to accomplish fitness goals”. I hope this helps, feel free to dm me on Instagram as well if you need more clarity @lady.ashong

Another thing that just came to mind, looking after/ supporting grandparents is also an interesting one or volounteering as a mentor for students etc. You can start all of these extracurriculars today and you would still have ample time to submit by the ED1 deadline and especially by Ed2 which is like jan 1st. Feel free to dm me @lady.ashong if you still need help!

Before you read this, please keep in mind I haven’t watched the full video yet (lack of time) Hi, I’m currently in high school, working to get into NYUAD (I’ve got tons of time) Anyway I had a few questions and I would be really happy to know more about this Uni. I’m a student here in the uae (ethnicity is Indian, but I’ve lived her for 7+ years) 1. IELTS, SAT and good board scores, if I have all three, what are my chances of getting a full scholarship? 2. What do I need to do to get a major in psychology? 3. How generous is NYUAD with scholarships? 4. Do full scholarships cover the dorm fee and the food? 5. What are your timetables like (ie, when are your long breaks) 6. What exactly is the common app essay supposed to be about? Will they give you prompts to help you out? 7. What’s the word limit for the essay? Thank you :)

Hi Sai, I would recommend watching the full video when you have time because it will answer some of the questions. However for the ones that it doesn’t, scholarships are based on individual financial situation and so entirely on your financial aid form. There is a different process for nationals tho. You don’t need to do anything to major in psychology haha you just choose the classes you would like to take. It is a liberal arts school and so they encourage you to try everything. I believe NYUAD is one of the most generous schools when it comes to scholarships. Yes, the full scholarship would cover dorm fee. For time tables, it depends on your classes that semester. You can check out the NYUAD website for the calendar for every sem. Hope this helps and good luck!

@@ladyashong hi, I have a few more questions, if it’s not an issue. I was searching the web for details on fees and I was unable to find any. In AED, how much would a course in psychology cost with no scholarship? Also, what are core courses?

The title is a tad misleading to those who aren't full aware with NYUAD's aid system. NYUAD does not offer any form of scholarships to international students (non-emiratis). They only offer financial aid to those who request it through completing the CSS profile. :)
@ladyashong
@ladyashong 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, yes international students have to apply for financial aid. I get the confusion but let me try to explain. It is hard to see when you haven’t received the aid package. When I applied it was need blind and I believe it is still need blind. However, the financial aid is received as a form of various scholarships, depending on what you qualify for. That’s the category I received my financial aid in regardless. Therefore, yes you have to apply for financial aid for non emirates, and, if required, you will receive that financial aid as various scholarships. This is what I got anyways, I can’t speak for everyone.

@ladyashong 10 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for your comment. My top tips would be to watch a lot of common application essay videos and also to research a lot on your school. You fundamentally want to try to learn a lot about the school that you like and also find something unique about yourself that no one else would know. Then try to develop that. I wrote like 10 different drafts until I got to this point. So I would recommend that you first start with the plan and then with writing. There is no specific frame in my opinion when it comes to writing the common app essay but there are key things to look out for. I tried to mention all of them in this video but also checking out other common application videos would help you a lot in terms of inspiration for your own!
