26:01 yah I feel that sums it up tbh 😅😭 I wanted to love "I want to Die but I want to Eat 떡볶이" as a Korean women who does mental health advocacy but it made me feel a lot of heart pain for the author. Cindy is def not as much as a 'dumbass American' compared to other reviews I've seen but yah the Korean cultural context informs all of these little bits that make you feel concerned for the author. Social drinking is a huge issue for women to succeed in the workplace and Se-hee was writing for a Korean audience so neither she or her professionals addressed it but my inner feminist cried a bit at the advice being given. same goes for the frustrating indirect talking-around-the-issue approach as that's still the Korean norm as per the idea of saving face--I still give Se-hee HUGE props for daring to write this book in the first place and admit to her struggles but it's still such taboo to actually articulate the direct causes of depression/anxiety on the patient: practioner sides. I think though that the author's honest attempt at sharing her story will help others understand just how confined the Korean zeitgeist is when it comes to mental health and hopefully encourage solidarity as more young working professionals try to overcome cultural/political barrier (woot woot to the Koreans who are going childfree like me despite the asshole president ㅋㅋ)

tysm for giving additional pov as a korean!! there def seems to be a lot of bigger systemic issues with social drinking, not directly talking about the issue, etc. and i'm sure it impacts women even more so due to societal expectations. i wish she got support and advice from a therapist who doesn't seem to be so entwined with those same cultural and political barriers tho :( i love that u are going childfree!! that's an important decision that makes so much sense when u evaluate finances, the general state of the world and future, etc and most importantly, u not wanting children is plenty reason enough

@@withcindy came back to this vid since I love rewatching your reading vlogs when in a book slump and thank you sm for your kind reply! lot of folks talk about Japan's shrinking birth rate but Koreans are having the same exact convo as the government (again, asshole anti-women president rn) is desperate to increase fertility while not addressing workaholicism. It's really nice of you to publicly encourage a stranger on the internet for their lifestyle choice and I really appreciate your words. I hope ppl scrolling in the comments also feel supported in their choices and/or become aware of women's struggles in pro-natalist cultures!

I read tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow last month and made the big mistake of continuing reading past the halfway point in the middle of the night (while on my period, pmsing real bad). I ended up pulling an all nighter and finishing the book at like five am sobbing my eyes out. I had a whole headache from crying💀 I agree with you about the platonic thing but i kind of interpreted it as him thinking he was in love with her because of how society always puts romantic love above platonic love. Sadie was his favorite person in the world so he assumed his feelings were romantic. From what i remember his ”romantic” feelings dont start until she starts dating a certain other character (no spoilers) and i feel like he was jealous because he knew that while their friendship was the most important relationship in his life, sadie valued her romantic relationship as much as/more than their friendship. I think theyre making a movie adaptation but i kind of wish theyd adapt the games because i really wanna play them!!
@withcindy
@withcindy Жыл бұрын
i hope the movie adaptation happens, i would def watch! i can see how he would get his feelings mixed up but i think it was unnecessary to label it as romantic in the first place. i think it can still be a valid issue where u have a best friend but feel like she's drifting away to her bf instead and ur friendship isnt as important. cuz that happens a lot to ppl too!!
@fannyostman7818
@fannyostman7818 Жыл бұрын
@@withcindy hmm yeah i wouldve preferred it if she kept their relationship just platonic, but i feel like sam is probably somewhere on the asexual spectrum so i think it makes sense to have him questioning his feelings and attraction to others. I lowkey wish gabrielle zevin delved deeper into that. Really excited for the movie i hope they give us some info about it soon☺️

What upset me too with Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is that while it was pitched as a friendship book, from male mcs perspective it was often more of a will they wont they moment, and it just felt so unbalanced and like romance found it's way in the book anyways :( It's like he's constantly kinda hoping for more, and also from before there were so many moments where he overlooked his friends wishes and concerns, in the end it felt like he was way more self centered.

Damn, "Live Laugh Love" Cindy is also deep, intellectual Cindy. Love that for you and I'm eager to read Be Not Afraid of Love too ❤️ Re: Tomorrow×3, I rated that book 4ish stars initially and then ended up reading it a few months later and upgrading it to 5 stars. Reading it for the first time was a wonderful experience, but the author's craft really shines upon re-reads. Maybe it's because I'm a romantic asexual, but I read Sam as asexual too. He LOVES Sadie and there's some sparks as well as comfort and companionship there that could indicate romantic interest, but he's described as not very interested in or driven by sex in his relationships. In that framework, I really liked the idea that it depicted a very different sort of love story and one we don't see often in books. I also liked that it depicted that even as individuals, Sadie and Sam had very different relationships with different people... their friendships and romantic relationships varied but in ways that felt true to character. Just food for thought for my intellectual (parasocial) bestie!
@withcindy
@withcindy Жыл бұрын
really interesting points! u can tell the author put a lot of thought into the book so it doesnt surprise me that it's even better with rereads. i would have loved to see the author explore sam's ace identity more!
@M3LF4C3
@M3LF4C3 Жыл бұрын
@withcindy That would have been great, for sure. The thought did cross my mind though that maybe because of the time frame and how these types of conversations around the spectrum of sexuality weren't front and center until more recently, maybe Sam wouldn't have had the language to identify himself that way and instead would just have a sense that true intimacy isn't sexual. I don't have the book in front of me but there's a moment in the book where in an interview he says that the type of relationship he has with Sadie is way more intimate than sex.

You're the first reviewer I've heard mention that Tomorrow x2 has cancer in it. Thanks for letting me know! 25:50 The Korean therapist responding like that does NOT surprise me. Mental health is still a HUGE stigma and is basically a "you should be able to fix yourself with easy things" still.

The first book's line about suppressing your emotions causing you to doubt the fullness of life and yourself is SO real. I struggle with this constantly. And I also find healing in nature Also I have the Tteokbokki book on my tbr! I'm not korean or a culture expert or anything but from what I've seen about mental health in korea over the years, the way the therapist talks makes a lot of sense to me, but in a frustrating way. Mental health has a long long way to go in SK especially with regard to talking to people with those issues and offering actionable solutions. Often what you hear about is people talking around the core problems and giving surface level fixes that put most of the onus on the patient. And you're right that it's much more normalized in SK to talk about weight and looks very bluntly; even if lots of people don't like it it happens

yea unfortunately its very common in asia to comment on people's weight openly! ppl dont realize how much of an impact that can have :(

Oh man yeah I probably would give daughter of doctor moreau 3.5 stars too looking back. I really loved it while I was reading it but the ending felt wrong and rushed, also just that the story could have certainly been fleshed out more like you said. However I still have mostly positive memories overall because I had the biggest book crush on Montgomery, I think he's great 🤣

I have a few issues with Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow but I think the relationship/friendship isn’t one of them. As an ace-spectrumed person it was actually really interesting to watch the unfold of an unspokenly queer platonic relationship between 3 people that kind of broke down because of poor feelings communication along the 3 separate levels of allo-attraction. It feels true to life somehow - people so absolutely in love, probably in love beyond the level of romantic love, but the necessities of romantic love to some parties within this unspoken bond strain things as certain relationships change. It felt really intentional to me and still representative despite being truly frustrating because it _is_ frustrating. Even being someone raised in the 00s rather than the 80s-90s like these characters and having the vocabulary they don’t to express these feelings, it’s frustrating and tough to navigate when you’re desperately in love with someone and that person loves you but you have almost an anti-desire to do move into a separate type of intimacy even though it would hurt you to see them achieve it with someone else you also love

I think the same could be said for white American therapists with the unhelpful and out of touch insight they can give. For example, when I as a black woman tried to explain the micro aggressions taking place at my work and my white ex-therapist told me I was looking too deep and it was “anxiety”
