If you look at the book as one big metaphor for life and death, it might help. Especially with how we greet death, whether it's fighting and screaming, meeting it willingly (the boy who sat down), being too tired to go on, etc. To me, the book asked the question "why do we even go through the process of living (aka willingly go to the starting line and do the walking part), if we know we're all gonna die anyways" and it really messed with my head, but maybe I read too much into it XD
@madisonestes61244 жыл бұрын
No, that's how I looked at it too. It's a good book that's much better when not taken literally. Someone else said it was a metaphor for war, and I see how that fits too, especially since they are all men.

One of the way you could interpret the senselessness of the plot is to see in comparison to signing up for war, this book was a result of the Vietnam era and like that it makes a lot more sense. Doesn' t mean one you have to love it now, but maybe you can appreciate some aspects of it more under that interpretation?

I loved this book (not including the boy sexualism. I think blocked those parts from my mind lol). I just liked their descent into madness and them realizing they were dumb and too young to make that decision. Like when kids sign up for war thinking it’s the manly and right thing to do because everyone else is doing it. But not realizing the full impact that decision will make or the horrors of war. And like in war, people follow orders and kill kids even if it’s wrong or they don’t know why. I liked the end because I took it as even though he won, after being on that walk (or in war) and seeing all your friends die around you, you’ll never truly recover or be the same. That even though you won, some part of you will always be on that road walking until you die. In my mind the shadow figure he ran towards was death and he died in the end.

Ahhh I feel like I raised your expectations too much! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending but I loved this book. It exhausted me hha, my whole body was so tired reading this book. I read that King’s inspiration behind this was the Vietnam War which was happening at the time of just before this was released. The metaphor of war is clear I think - the televised draft and numbers being called up, friends dying all around, no clear reason for why it’s happening, daydreaming of their loves back at home... and then the end... when the winner finishes and is damaged beyond belief. I love your spoiler vlogs... for me I won’t watch your video until I’ve read the book if I’m interested in it! If I’m not interested I’ll still watch your vlog... @desertrosereads Actually, his writing style as Bachman IS different from how he used to write under his own name. All the Bachman books are much bleaker than his others of the time. The Bachman books don't have silver linings (Danny and his mom got away! Ben and Mark got away! Charlie torches The Shop! etc...), as Bachman, King just let his darkest instincts rule. In fact, Pet Cemetery was supposed to be a Bachman book, but his cover was blown by the time it was published.

*SPOILERS* I finished it a while ago. The ending, yes, was underwhelming. In fact, on the contrary, if King had used the ending he discussed earlier in the novel (the winner whispering something in the other guy's ear even after he was dead), with McVries being the second last (I loved his small anecdotes and metaphors, he was comparatively more mature than the other teens), it would've worked better for me. Stebbin's death was also pretty abrupt, considering he had so much build up. I guess in the end, it was like our protagonist didn't really find his answer, just a life-altering experience that's all which could've been so much more. Apart from these, what I loved about this book, is the physical morbidness of the plot. I literally felt exhausted by the end of it, waiting for my legs to cramp or my brain to lose its sanity. I may not be able to relate to a clown causing wreak havoc in a town for decades and scaring it's teenagers but I can definitely imagine how it might feel to walk with blisters popping inside my shoe, with blood and pus oozing and sloping about as I 'put one foot in front of the other' and the visuals King creates with these specific moments is what sent chills all over my body. The psychological breakdown of each character, the draining of optimism to sheer madness. This is what real horror must feel like.

i feel like the whole book was stalled except for when it was needed, the ending, like the ending was just ‘tgere were 3 left, then mcvires dropped dead then stebbins dropped dead’ but other then that, for me its a 3.5/5 because i live dystopian, the concept was really cool, some cool moments and the brutal deaths were some how intriguing, but instead of just walking and talking we needed some background on how the walk started and better explanations to why they did it, like i care about that way more then other stuff spoken about. but i liked how we watched some characters go from normal to insane, and how the walk to them seemed unreal. i also feel like we needed more information on being scouted (its something like scouted or squad i forgot), and why people even died because of that

I thought this book was a pretty good read, because I believe that the whole message of them doing the walk without them knowing why they are doing it is eluding to things like going to war or things similar of that nature. And it would make sense too considering that the time this was being written was either sometime during the end or right after the war in Vietnam. Many boys at the time would sign up for military service just because they were lost and didn't know where they belonged in society. Not only that, it's a statement on how these characters come to know each other and begin to become desensitized to the violence that they are constantly exposed to as the grow more exhausted. You have to remember too, these boys have to walk faster than 4 miles an hour over an incredible distance. The human body is likely to start falling apart and losing it once you walk as far as they did so it's also more your just watching these characters fall apart. As far as the sexual stuff goes you have to consider two things. This is written from the perspective of teenage boys, so they tend to be overwhelmed by sexual thoughts as they come of age but also this was written by a 18 or 19 year old Steven King in the 70s, and while he had a great writing talent, I'm sure he had a very tenuous grasp on the world and anything that existed outside of his teenage self. The sexual content seemed to be a focus of the book from the point of view provided in this video and it's really not a major plot point in this book. It's just kind of showing you where the characters minds are at. Not to mention there's so many little tiny lines that hint at what kind of sick universe these teenagers live in so that's probably adding to the strangeness of how these boys behave. I can understand it not being you're thing, that's totally cool, but I think a lot of the point is kind of missed as to what this could be eluding to and what it's supposed to mean.

I finished reading this last night and really wanted to know what other people thought of this book. I was underwhelmed. I had two thoughts on the ending ; either the Walk made Garraty insane or he died right after he won and that is why he can now "run". Either way, I was more curious to see what happens after the Walk to the winner (i.e. having to be hospitalized, does the Major parade them around, does the Walk psychologically damage them to the point they cannot interact with everyday people anymore). I was also curious about the world building. There were hints throughout the book about the government in this alternate reality and seemingly because things happened differently during WWII. I didn't hate the ending, but was just kind of meh. I also thought it was a wasted opportunity on exploring this alternate America.

I have only read three Stephen King books so far and besides this one the others were Cell (which I didn't like) and Misery (which I did like). I also liked this book but I did find parts of it totally stupid. I wondered why they were walking because basically it was a death sentence. It really never got into why they wanted to win so bad that they would risk their life. I also think you were spot on with why there were no females...they were definitely smarter than the males. LOL And that ending!!! I am not really a fan of open-ended books. I want to know without a doubt what happened. That ending is still bugging me. Did you ever decide what you thought happened? I like spoiler vlogs but I have to wait and watch them after I have read the book which is sometimes months later.

10:43 Why aren't there any girls in The Long Walk? Because King started writing this in 1966 when he was 19 and a freshman at the University of Maine. King would protest the Vietnam War. The Long Walk is a metaphor for the Vietnam War. The boys are soldiers and only males could be soldiers in the US army in 1966. I'm writing some fan-fiction, a sequel to The Long Walk. It's 14 years later, and Peter McVries 4-year old sister is now 18. They now allow girls in The Long Walk, and family members of walkers can skip the lottery and get a free pass into the walk if they want. I'm guessing they had that rule already because it's unlikely the brothers Joe and Mike would both be picked in the lottery. Garraty decides to train Katrina years before she enters. Remember Scramm with the pregnant wife? Well, his boy Jacob is now 13, and can join for free too because his father was a walker. As you might expect, Katrina and Jacob meet and bond over their common history ... her brother and his father both died in The Long Walk. Although he's 13 and she's 18, he's actually heavier and taller since he's built like a moose, like his dad, and Katrina is short and petite like her mom. This is to their advantage when she can no longer walk, so he carries her on his shoulders.

My favorite SK is Pet Semetary but next to that is Under the Dome. (Special shoutout to Salem's Lot, a Dracula pastiche, so goth 🦇)

Lol. I love The Long Walk, but I can see why you didn’t like it. I always argue with my sister and niece about the ending. I personally love dystopian novels, and I can understand why people would join the long walk. Some would do it for fame, some with hope, and, as you mentioned, some would do it to die. However, I don’t think it’s a competition that is in any way realistic. The only Bachman book that is realistic is “Rage.”

I loved the Long Walk.. Ending? Yes, exactly the way it was suppose to be. Just like in Shawshank, when Brookes was so upset when he made parol. The Rage, must be missing the point of the ending of that book. Would love to hear what you think

From what I remember when I read The Long Walk it reminded me of The Hunger Games but darker. I think the boys were picked to do the walk and didn't have much of a choice. And I believe the walk was live on the TV so it was entertainment for their town. To me the ending made sense. The kid may have won but he was now insane from the trauma of the walk. So he won, but it cost him his sanity.

I'm just half way through and I'm really considering DNFing this. So I decided to just watch your whole review on it just because I want to know if I'm wasting my time. I think I just really wanted to like it but only because it's such a hyped Stephen King book 😂 I like the writing style but it just seems so pointless. The characters don't interest me at all and I keep forgetting who's who. It's so repetitive like you've said and I don't have the attention span to keep going with it. Honestly I think you are being generous giving it two stars 🙈
