Glad you enjoyed The Majesties! I came into the book not expecting anything and was surprised as well by the low ratings. But I thought it was a very interesting look into rich Indonesians, and as an Indonesian I'm super happy that there are more English literature that showcase our country! The characters here are definitely a minority in the Indonesian community, but I really liked how the author inserts a slice of historical events like the economic crisis and how it affected Chinese-Indonesian families.

I really enjoyed this, even though you didn't like everything you read - I like hearing your reasoning about it, also the spur-of-the-moment reactions. I completely understand that you don't want to force yourself to read something that'll put you in that kind of negative mood. I agree that it's important to read about uncomfortable subjects, but I've also experienced reading a few things that made me feel so sick and disturbed for a prolonged amount of time that I wished I'd never picked it up. I'm really interested to hear what you think about the comedy fantasy (and yay for cats in space helmets!), as I'd love to read more of that by women writers as well.

I'm totally on the same page as you when it comes to books like Sweet Dreams, I personally can't stomach books that deal a lot with sexual violence. It doesn't matter if the book is amazingly crafted, I just can't do it. For example, so many people have recommended A Little Life to me but I'm never gonna read it because of the rape trigger warning, I don't care how good it is supposed to be I just know it's gonna have a negative impact on my mental health.

Try 500 Kingdoms Series by Mercedes Lackey for comical SSF (even more up your alley... they're all fairy tale retellings and mash-ups). The dragon scene in The Sleeping Beauty alone is worth the price of admission!

I just googled The Majesties and a few of the review blurbs mention some similarities to Crazy Rich Asians, so that's where I think people got mixed up. But the mass murder part to me seems like it would heavily override the ultra-rich family in Asia part. LOL. ANYWAY, great vlog as usual. Getting your immediate gut feelings of all the books is totally worthwhile alongside the later wrap-up style ones!

girls against god is one of my favourite books! i haven’t read the translation but the original is great! also it’s interesting that the english translation has been blurbed/marketed as horror because that’s not the case at all in norway, it has been categorised more as a piece of experimental writing/ a bit autobiographical - i also think that listening to jenny hvals music would really enhance the experience of reading her books
@JeansThoughts4 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is one of the number one reasons books get rated lower - because of mis-marketing, blurbs that mislead the wrong readers to pick something up! Such a shame.

DNFing a book that isn't working for you is the best thing to do if it has elements that make you feel too uncomfortable. There's been a few books I've backed out of once some themes have came to light.

"The Majesties" sounds so so good! I actually disliked "Crazy rich asians" so, for me it's a good sign that it's nothing like it ^-^ What I also wanted to say is, that I don't find your articulation of your thoughts during the reading process incoherent at all. I can follow your train of thoughts pretty well and always get what you're talking about. So, don't worry too much about it. I love these kinds of videos :)

Oh, the call of the wild bookworm: "I don't know what to reeeeeaaaad!" Is... is your plushie called Sandwich? That's so cute 🥺 I might check out Girls Against God, I like books wot are a bit of a trip. Will definitely try to get my hands on The Majesties too. The first line of the Amazon description for The Majesties is a quote saying, "reads a bit like Crazy Rich Asians if the book began with familicide instead of romance" so... yeah... seems like a deliberate marketing push to compare the two.

I read a different Vanessa Riley book in Feb that was also an interracial Regencyromance and didn't really like it. But I also picked it up not realizing it was basically Christian fiction and it was very religious and not at all my thing. The one I read also had a lot of internal antiblackness bc the heroine didn't know she was biracial until she was an adult, which was also offputting for me. Hopefully you'll like A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby more because it does sound like a really interesting premise.

I get frustrated by a lot of book comparisons, and a little suspicious of ones that seem to be motivated more by identity than by content. The Majesties sounds way more like My Sister, the Serial Killer than it does Crazy Rich Asians.
