@@emmie4628 I wouldn't. It's a series, so reading them in order will make more sense. You'll get to know the characters, the world-building, meeting their friends and enemies, their stories and the over-arching plotline. Both books are adorable and I don't think you'd want to miss out on reading the first, or you'd be missing out on a lot of the things that Emily & Wendell go through 🙂

Coming from someone who first collected Veronica Speedwell in hardback then sold them and bought the paperbacks and then REbought the whole set in hardback…I highly suggest going with the hardbacks. They’re hella cheap on pangobooks. And they’re all the same size. And you’ll think that you’ll hate the first book not matching but if you look at my shelves, they’re very visible and you don’t notice at all.

OMG EMILY WILDE YES!!! I was giggling from pg 4 already XD I loved the first book but holy moly the second one blows it through the roof 😍SOOOOO funny, cute, whimsical, AND THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE BANTER!!! The pen scene and the enchanted stones in the museum in particular had me HOWLING XD I was sending those quotes to all of my friends even tho they knew nothing about it 😂 I even got my mom to sit down and read both books. Omg, I could talk about it for hours. It’s been a hot second since I smiled and laughed and giggled so hard while reading a book ❤😂 As soon as I finished I made a Howl x Sophie amv too cause it was the closest vibe I had to editing with them LOL (the curse of my 2 hobbies being editing and reading is that you can’t directly edit with books 🥲). BUT I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!! AAAAAAAAAH!!!! So glad you loved it as much as I did 😍🔥❤️😭😂

I am so happy to hear your thoughts on Check and Mate because soo many people gave it 5 stars and loved it but I read it and gave it I think a 3? I totally agreed that the romance just wasn’t there, the love interest barely came into play until like the middle of the book. It was a good time but just not 5 stars to me.
