Since 2017, the Toyota RAV4 has outpaced the Camry in sales, and the Corolla Cross offers an affordable, fuel-efficient alternative for those who find the RAV4 too spacious. Competing in the subcompact SUV segment with models like the Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, and Chevrolet Trailblazer, the Corolla Cross debuted in 2022. A midcycle redesign is expected in 2025, given Toyota’s typical vehicle lifecycle of six to seven years. While specific details for the U.S. model haven't been confirmed, a refreshed version has already been introduced in Thailand, featuring a digital instrument cluster, an updated infotainment system, and a new design.
Toyota is unlikely to change the engine for the 2025 model. The current 2.0-liter, non-turbocharged I-4 engine delivers 169 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and either front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional all-wheel drive (AWD). The fuel economy ranges from 29 to 31.1 mpg city/highway. The AWD model takes 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the FWD model is slightly quicker at 8.4 seconds, though acceleration may not meet the expectations of some customers. For those seeking better fuel efficiency and performance, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is recommended.
In terms of safety, the Corolla Cross earned four stars for frontal crashes and five stars for side crashes from the NHTSA and was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes features like automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and emergency braking. Higher-end models often come with additional safety technologies, such as blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.
