READY for the KALAHARI RALLY?!

Let's end this season with a bang and ride the KALAHARI RALLY!
This is a Dakar qualifier and the winner of this rally goes home with an actual ticket to Dakar. I've entered the Adventure Raid class so I don't need a navigation tower with roadbook, but I can just navigate on GPS. This is my first ever rally and I am nervous and excited at the same time. I'm the only woman, only 250cc rider and only European to enter the competition so I better do good!

My last motocross race was 1975. I wish I could say I remember exactly what pre-race butterflies feel like but, I don't. I remember it feeling like everything was happening in slow motion and my brain was WOT. Butterflies is an apt description of how your body feels. It is definitely a time when you are fully alive.

As a New Zealand citizen I loved to see the New Zealand Silver Fern sticker on James' bike. It had the words "Kia Kaha" in Maori written on it too. Kia kaha means "Be Strong".

I’m vicariously both nervous and thrilled for you. What a challenge and adventure! I love the thrill and challenge of track school and track riding, which now seems painfully timid (not to mention a whole lot less scenic) compared to what you have undertaken. This is Itchy Boots taken to a whole new level :) P.S.: I was thinking, while watching you trying to pick the right track at some points in Namibia and elsewhere, that a true off-road GPS (Garmin GPSMAP 66sr or similar) might help where the Zumo XT does not show sufficient trail detail. I have the XT as well, but the full-on GPS units (including the new ones that incorporate InReach) could be lifesavers.

Much respect for you, not only the desire to do the rally but we are on holiday in Amsterdam and navigating all the cycle riders is a challenge.. Tomorrow morning we are heading out towards France to get away from some of the crowd. I know the bikes help the carbon footprint and I a highly respect the efforts but they are everywhere. Ook reed er een vriend van mij mee bij de trucks. Dat was echt super om tussen de grote jongens te lopen en hun materiaal te mogen bekijken. Mostly Husqvarna! Wow! That makes me proud! OMG, even with GPS instead of a road map navigation nightmare, do you think 250 cc Savannah has enough power to carry you through Kalahari sand dunes ??? Lite bike has some advantage - you can pick it up and carry her on your back through the desert....... but I would hate seeing your spirit being crushed. 6 stages - they most likely have time limits ...Do you think 250 is up for the job ? Love your optimism and from all my heart wish you good luck - but odds are big time stacked against you and little Savannah. Even if you finish 3 stages of 6 it's fantastic achievement and experience. You know you already won a prize as the only woman participant. No one would like to see Noraly hurt , but stages have time limits....

@@istra70 - Not for the adventure part. And even in competition it’s wise to don’t push it to the limit. It’s much better to complete every stage with a consistent time. One speedy crash costs usually more time even when you don’t get hurt and be able to continue. Maybe you are every day 2nd or 3rd but if you’re able to archive that consistently you probably 1st at the end summary.

I have no knowledge about bikes, cars or racing, but find it quite interesting. I once had a holiday cottage in a village which has a moto cross on a farm right in the village, with an event that week, so it was either escape for the day or go to the event. I thoroughly enjoyed the day!
