Okay I commented on the latest video about the rabbits. I love the setup you have. I won't take back what I said on your other video because it's true. Just not for your lovely rabbits. Thank you for directing me to this video.

Hi Sam. Good day from a Canadian just north east of you. I see in the construction video that you have placed fiberglass bat insulation in the floor of your cabin. Some wild critters some times like to dig into floor insulation if it is not covered on the underside. A good way to protect it is to "skirt around the cabin to keep the critters out from underneath. Problem solved. Also helps to protect any plumbing if there is any under the floor. Just a thought. Have a great day.Tom in Canada at the NB-NS border.

Yes! We already had some critters steeling fiberglass for nests and what not. We actually just stapled reflectix bubble foil insulation all under the house to provide more insulation, and a barrier to hold and protect the fiberglass in place

That bear looks pretty good! Do you think you’ll ever replace the ladder with a set of stairs?

If I was Moriah’s Dad, I would be so happy that she chose so well when looking to build a life together. I’m 63 and am just getting started on our 4-5 acres. I wish we had started when I was your age, but I’m not sure my wife would have stayed with me. So far we have the pump, well, and solar to run the pump. Next step is planting a fruit and nut orchard. I hope to meet someday.

Am loving your updates on your homestead. A thought for the tree debris is to rent a chipper and use the chips for landscaping/mulch.

Hi Sam & Moriah. All the trees you harvest do you replant or do you want to clear more back first? Or do you have access to more communal trees? 150 Garlic bulbs. Wow. How do you keep them after harvest? Preserved in oil or something? Does the property stop at the river or beyond? Is Elon Musk the cheapest way to get Internet? I hear it isn't cheap, but reliable. How wide/long in feet is the property? Not in square feet as I can't visualise that. The Rabbits, for food? No Chickens yet? Must be on the cards. I still think you will sink a Well in the end. It's fantastic that you are a year in and still love it. Ha4d work but rewarding. Do you grow your own herbs too? Anyways, great to get a vlog again, unless I've missed a few in the algorithm. Will look. Merry Christmas and hope the family are well.

You need nitrogen to speed up your compost. Too much straw is too much carbon to nitrogen ratio. If it's not heating up it's too much carbon. I sometimes resort to just buying nitrogen if I cant get enough green grass. You should not keep adding to it once it gets going (heats up) and moves through different bacterial stages. Different microbes dominate at different stages. It should be between 135 to 160 degrees and only cool off as it all decomposes and becomes nice fine dark compost. 4ft x 4ft x 4ft is a good size for a compost pile. Look at all those green pine needles . . . add them to the compost. It all looks very cool :o)

Yes! For a long time we struggled to find our nitrogen. The veggie scraps from the restaurant are definitely supplementing us well. The amount of lettuce we get is crazy! I think our problem now will be finding our carbons, especially going into winter. We are dying to learn more about this so thanks for the comment! Seeing people whip up a nice pile of soil in a month is inspiring!

@@sam.and.moriah You have way more carbon than you need with all the trees. You just need a chipper to make it smaller. But straw or old hay and dried leaves are mostly carbon. Search for "Hot Compost Pile (Berkeley Method)" or "Berkely Rapid Compost Method" or "thermophilic composting". It will be fun watching your garden grow next year,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to see several improvement projects completed and more underway. 😊 The Starlink service sounds great! I hope you get the 200 Mbs download speed they solicit on their web site. I don't see the upload speed posted and was wondering what speedtest reports for that also. I would also like to see an update on how well the new solar grid performs on a sunny day.

I don’t check too often on the speed test (mostly because we have never had an issue with the internet seeming slow) but every time I look it’s somewhere in between 100 and 200. This is also with it telling us that our field of view is partially obstructed ( lots of trees around us and being in a valley)
