Okay but like kinda a good thing that she didn't choose a different card... obviously choosing hide and seek is supposed to be like the worst option but if she wasn't the chosen "sacrificial lamb" or whatever she would be tied into the family's crap. Like the next in law to come around who drew hide and seek would have to be killed and she'd have to be complicit in that or else she'd die. So I guess it's good that she ended it all rather than having to make the choice between death and murdering someone innocent like 5 years into her marriage or whatever

(spoiler alert) the butler is the most disturbing character because in the (somewhat thin at times, in my opinion but i still like the film) class divide allegory the butler is a class traitor - he's a bootlicker brainwashed by his employers, the allegorical and literal capitalists (as in, owners of the means of production) of the story, to have more loyalty to them than to fellow members of the working or middle class. and alex's turn is disturbing but not surprising, which reflects that when the chips are down capitalists always protect their own, they never choose to protect the outsider. he shifts allegiance after he realises that Grace will never be with him, i.e. after he realises that he can't gain anything - love, affection, a family away from his own - from protecting her anymore. and daniel being ambivalent about saving Grace up to the last moment and dying for it represents the way capitalists will cannibalise their own if they step too far out of line in the process of doing the right thing. if someone threatens the wealth and power of the capitalists from within then they must be dealt with.

@louisac3034 жыл бұрын
i'll also add if you're interested in the allegory, that (at least imo) there are weak points. fun as the ending is, the family's beliefs being confirmed in the end hurts the allegory a little. it implies that it's possible for the rich and powerful as a whole class (because the family can be read as representing capitalists as a group, rather than just one privileged family) to topple just by doing capitalism wrong, by not managing to maintain the rules, when in fact capitalists don't have to follow any rules - rules for thee, not for me etc. I think it would have been thematically stronger to end the film with the curse not being true, and instead of some higher power destroying the family, Grace should do it - because the working and middle classes have to take power out of the hands of capitalists themselves, there's no higher force they can wait for to punish their oppressors. i think it would be a more satisfying reclamation of Grace's power. obviously the movie doesn't need to do this to make a satisfying comparison to real world class divides, but i think it would have worked better thematically - BUT, then we wouldn't get the awesome sunrise scene which is * chef's kiss * so good, so 🤷🏼♀️

@@sIurz just because you don’t think critically about media doesn’t mean the people making it don’t lmao it’s not exactly subtle (or even particularly complex) as far as social satire goes, my guy - I bet you thought us was just a horror movie too haha horror is one of the most common genres filmmakers create social allegory through - reflecting society’s anxieties back at us is an effective way to create horror that genuinely connects with the viewer. that doesn’t stop being true just because you’re not thinking about it that hard, and you don’t have to think about it if you don’t want to. but imo the viewing experience is richer when you do - you might actually enjoy movies more if you did 😉

For me, most of the time in media where they have a woman screaming, it either sounds kinda sensual or like she's singing. i don’t think it was grace killing his mother that set alex off; like trin says, alex said himself he’d be willing to kill his mom for grace. i think alex found daniel’s body and automatically assumed that grace was the one who did it. i ALSO think that daniel 100% would’ve lived through le bail if charity hadn’t killed him. there’s a moment before alex dies where grace is given a chance to decide whether she forgives him or not, and only after she makes it clear she doesn’t want him anymore does he die. i think that, if daniel had survived charity’s attacks, grace would’ve forgiven him and le bail would’ve let him live.

The thing is though that in the movie the mother said herself that “if you didn’t believe it was real you wouldn’t have brought her here” or something along those lines. So at the end of the day he knew it was a possibility that the game could be real as he knew what happened when he was younger when Daniel was the reason that guy was killed so it’s recent but he didn’t want to take the chance of her not taking part in the game and dying himself. He’s just selfish

I kind of saw Alex’s shift when he heard what his Aunt had to say about wishing she had killed her husband herself. You see him taking this in, along with his supposed connection to la belle, and it clicks for him. He tries to deny it to his mom, but she sees through him. By the time he’s free and finds Daniel he’s made up his mind. His last attempt to talk himself down is asking her if she’ll stay with him after this - but he already knows she won’t and he already knows he’ll kill her.
@CLDouglas184 жыл бұрын
Thank you for putting this into words because I was trying to figure that part out! I just wish Grace would’ve explained to Alex that Daniel was trying to save her and that maybe would’ve kept him from turning and they could’ve gotten out alive. But I guess it all ended how it should’ve because every single one of them was wrong from the get go and Grace was the only truly innocent one. But do you think Alex and Daniel would’ve been spared if they stuck with trying to save Grace instead?
@Classyelll4 жыл бұрын
@@CLDouglas18 I’ve been debating that myself and I’m still not sure. The movie definitely seems to follow the “sins of the father” ideology - Alex makes it clear that family members who chose to not have their spouses draw a card died the next day - but at the same time it is hard to decide on if, in a case where Daniel hadn’t been killed by his wife, La Belle would have killed him. I think ultimately the answer is no, they wouldn’t have been spared. In essence, the sacrifice is made as payment for the gift La Belle gave them - Alex and Daniel both willingly used the wealth of their family, participated in their evils, and are therefore judged as such. But I can also see interpreting it another way; I love how the movie left it open for discussion.

You can tell that he wants to help her and knows that everything that's happening is _so_ fucking fucked up... yet he's not all "jump in, save the day, get the girl." The decisions he made didn't do anything to make any of the present danger and risk null, just toned it down from a 10 to a 9.5 for _a moment._ The way his character is able to keep the scary, dangerous aspect apparent whilst also including the emotion that a lot of films in the horror and thriller genre lack is what takes this film beyond.

ah man yes!! Daniel is such a great character. I totally agree that making him the hero of this would have been the wrong play since they were his family and he did have a loyalty to them that he felt guilty about, as people do when it comes to family. I mean, hell, he tells us straight up, "I am not who you think I am." And he wasn't! The whole time, he kept me on my toes about what he was going to do about the situation. He was a drunk sassy bastard of a character, and yet he may have been the best person in that family, which says a lot about them lmao. He was a really good foil to Alex, who was presented to be the "good brother" and who "got out." Alex never told Grace about the game or what she was getting into if they got married. As opposed to Daniel, who we know told Charity before hand by their conversation when he's like, "You couldn't wait to sign your soul away." And the literal parallel of scenes when the family had Grace tied down; Daniel saved her, but Alex stands over her ready to sacrifice her. Like you said, having him toe the line between trying to help Grace but also not wanting to betray his family was such a great take on the character instead of straight up having him get her out of there because Grace saving herself and winning the game against the family was a /chef's kiss ending. Especially because of what happened to him as a child and how that still haunts him. Family vs doing what he thinks is right. And when he hears about what Georgie did, how it paralleled with himself but at an escalation of trying to kill Grace instead of just calling out for someone like he did, like he still does. That's when the flip switches and he knows that there is no getting out. They are, and always have been, fucked from the start, even as children. But Grace isn't, and that's when he actively tries to help her by poisoning the family and untying her. It wasn't Alex. Alex had always been selfish. He wasn't willing to give up the family, as we see when he learns that Daniel died, for Grace, but Daniel was for Alex's sake but also for Grace's, who he said from the start didn't belong to this family since she had a soul. While I wished he could of lived, which would have been impossible??, I did like that he didn't die with the rest of the family by exploding. I thought him getting shot doing what he finally WANTED to do was fitting, especially since he was still trying to reason with his wife and find what humanity she had to appeal to her instead of attacking her if he really stopped giving a shit about the family. But Charity just didn't have any left. He had suffered his whole life, and he also suffered through death by bleeding out with no one there with him. He was selfless enough to tell Grace to go, even though most people don't want to die alone. The rest of his family just got to explode, boom done. Instead he had to choke on the Le Domas blood. UGH, this movie is just so good and underrated. The story was great, Samara Weaving CRUSHED every scene she was in I could not take my eyes off her, and the comedy hit all the marks. I loved it so much, as you can see by this essay lmfao, and I'm soooooooo happy you liked it too!!!
@alexorr57724 жыл бұрын
Finally, an appreciater of Daniel. What I also like is that even though the movie is presented as Alex is the main male and *he's* the one that's good, and *he* will get her out is that if you pay closer attention, even from the start it tells you Daniel is the one who's actually thinking things through and trying to protect people. From the very first scene he's set up to be just as pivotal a character as Alex despite a lot of people missing that. Anyways, I loved him and he deserved better, but with all the possible cards laid out for him it was never going to end well for him. HOWEVER, he could've very easily let her be killed and his life would be no different, he'd remain miserable and be the one who never got out but really he'd be fine. He wasn't doing it for him, he knew it could only end badly for him, he did it for Alex and even more than that for Grace and the knowledge that whether or not the legend was true, if she escaped, his family had a chance to be a whole lot less fucked. Which just makes his character all the more interesting. So yeah- Daniel was fantastic, the acting of the mains was phenomenal, and Alex kinda sucks.
