I think the movie just has a lot of racial parallels like the more I watched it, the more I understood it. Sueann is the perfect example of what being black and growing up in a predominantly white school can look like, especially in the time period it was set in (the 70s/80s). She’s looked at as the joke and the outcast to play with. She’s definitely seen the ways of what society deems is acceptable! I noticed that she constantly keeps her hair straightened, she keeps her daughter’s hair straightened (and cut so she doesn’t look desirable), and she feeds into doing what this group (mainly of white kids) wants because it’ll get her closer to a sense of popularity that she lacked when she was their age. It’s not your ideal horror movie and it can be looked at through comedic lenses but it’s just also really good? (To some lmao) it’s good in its own way when you really look at the Easter eggs and parallels from the flashback scenes of her in school to the present day.

Octavia Spencer is definitely one of a kind and a phenomenal actress just in general. I'm also guessing she tends to switch from a character so innocent to another character that is potentially vile/crooked/deceptive. From the title alone, I knew that Octavia is gonna deliver her acting prowess to the next level. It sucks to even believe that horror movies had given me so much anxiety since I was little until now.

@sad.jackfr00t3 ай бұрын
Idk about that… when I was a teenager, I was pretty damn stupid and after that day I probably would’ve forgotten about it tbh lol
@formlessdivinity3 жыл бұрын
Despite her being crazy, the "I was just a kid" "So was I motherfucker" scene is a really good moment that I think highlights black trauma. Black children have to deal with racist peers, being called slurs, being outcasted, and being treated cruelly just based on te color of their skin. And white people can grow up and realize they were wrong and move on, people get so upset when you mention someone's racist past, but their actions have lasting effects on black people. Black children don't get to preserve their innocence and experience their childhood in the same way as their white peers.

Ma and Sky High have a surprising lot in common: 1) Main "villain" Ma/Gwen is a woman who wants revenge for how they were treated in high school. 2) Gets back at her tormentors through dating/kissing/getting close to their kids: Gwen through Will, Ma through Andy 3) Protagonist Maggie/Will is sympatheic and tries to get them to stop and doesn't listen 4) Ma/Gwen attacks the main guys father and mother because of their status and revenge. 5) Protagonist gets helps from unlikely source (Ma's daughter, Ron Wilson, bus driver) 7) Ma and Gwen lose at the very end, 8) The main girl is the only one to realize something's up while the main guy is way too dumb to realize until it's too late or gets their own realization. Difference is Will doesn't get screwed over.
