To me at least, it's supposed to sound weird as it signifies the sudden tension and panic that comes from a gunfight. A lot of stakes are on the line, and it only takes a second for the player to get shot and die, either by a well landed shot, or a stray bullet. Sounds like the drum players are trying their best to keep the rhythm as controlled as possible in a tense scenario.
