About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.
Music from Epidemic Sound.

Last year I took some fencing and put it up to form an arch for my beans. It worked wonderfully and made harvesting so easy. I had cukes on one side and pole beans on the other. Certainly going to do that again.

So nice of you! It IS an exciting time of year. We still need to be patient about sowing some things, but others are definitely ready for some compost.

Took pallet frames, attached wire mesh on the bottom against the voles etc, put them on a layer of cardboard on my garden floor, filled with leftover compost / soil mix. Matching cold frame on top,and ready is the nursery for my seedling babies ❤ can't wait!

Pallet beds can be great! I don't use them here because there are so many slugs and snails in the grass surrounding the garden and they just make a banquet of all my young plants.

That’s a really interesting bean structure! Like that idea a lot. I’m ridiculously giddy with excitement for the season ahead. It’s been a long time coming, since starting to create our new kitchen garden early in autumn. I sourced some of the dwarf artichokes you mentioned a while ago. Excited to try those, so thanks for the inspiration. Here’s to a fabulous season for all of us and may the voles, slugs and rabbits play fair. 😂❤

I’m on the other side of the world in the sub tropics where it’s been too hot and humid with way too much rain to do much so I’m at the prep stage ready for March. So opposite weather but had the big wait to get sowing and growing like you. The soil temperature starts to drop soon and seeds will germinate. Also the rain lessens. I’m getting ready to sow and need a big clean out of the shade house so I can do some work. I’m planting my tomatoes and eggplants right now and will sow the salad patches under exclusion nets. I’m putting cardboard down for my next beds. At the moment the yakon, pumpkins, tromboccino and cucumbers are happy and producing well and corn is growing. Love your channel, tips and passion! Yes we get a lot from you even in the Australian subtropics 😊

Love the bean support, could be a good plan here in the windy soggy west of Ireland. Happy spring gardening liz, and thanks for sharing.

"Kee'-OH-dja" is the red and white concentric rings beetroot, and the O is a short one like the O in "won," as in "I won a prize." (That g-i combination sounds like the d-j of judge or trudge; to make a ghee-ah sound, with a hard G, it would have to have an H after the G.) How do you keep track of what seeds have been sown in which tray? Just as soon as I have sown more than one crop or one variety indoors (or outdoors, for that matter!), I have to label them! I love that you are able to keep track of yours so well. Happy gardening!😊 💚 😊

Hi Liz. I managed to get someone to recycle my old kitchen appliances at last so that was a great improvement to my kitchen patio. I will be pruning my neighbours tree that overhangs and causes quite a mess on my stamped concrete and I need to buy some potting compost to for some cuttings I managed to root in water. I miss a proper garden. Thanks for another great video

We’ve been fortunate with nice weather I pruned all my fruit trees, and collected scion’s for grafting in the spring. Mr.J did a nice job helping you with the bean supports. I grew Greek gigantic beans for the first time last year. Absolutely love them. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

Really the only thing I have managed to do is get 2 large bags of coco coir in. Weather here is still hovering around the freezing mark. I grow everything in pot, containers, so as soon as the weather gets slightly warmer, I can dump all the soil out, mix with coir and compost, then get some seeds started. I bought a fushia last year with flowers as large as my palms, managed to keep it over winter and get at least one decent cutting going. Revamping my growing areas to allow different plants to get sunlight in a mostly shaded area.

Your bean support idea is the best I’ve seen. I was about to grow beans on a Tee pee structure this year, but I kept thinking about how hard it would be to reach the ones on the inside. Your solution is quite simple and makes a lot of sense. 😁. Thank you for sharing!

Love the bean support -would make harvesting so much easier than the teepee style I have for one of the variety of beans I'm growing at the moment- now just need my own Mr J to build it for me haha!! Thanks Liz - good luck with your coming growing season!! Cheers Linda

We're in the last weeks of summer in NZ. I'm planting perpetual spinach, leeks, celery, kale and beetroot under frost cloth for sun and heat protection. I've sown and planted zucchini, yellow cherry tomatoes and beans for late warm weather crops. And I've trench composted in beds and pots I'm planting those in, to enrich the soil for them after summer, chopped and dropped to keep the soil cool.🍅🥒🥬
