Watching you work is like watching Bob Ross paint. You’re excellent at your craft, you make everything that’s really complex look like it’s easy, and it’s just a joy to watch.

Randi, in my opinion, you are an absolute Genius! Wow, you tore into that complex thing like nobody's business and everything works like new! You really are something else young lady... Amazing! Fred

Randi is definitely the one to call for stuff like this. Absolutely second to nobody. One thing to keep in mind though, is never look at the whole thing. It will seem incomprehensible.. This is true in any troubleshooting situation. It's like looking at your engine and electrical system all at once when the battery isn't charging. You have to break it down into the individual systems/circuits. It's far more manageable in that way. Often times what looks extremely intimidating and hard to understand is more understandable when you move inward and look at each individual system. It's like the opposite of a view from 30k feet.

Very nice job on the restoration. He's as good as new. It's hard to believe this thing was 600 1984 Dollars new. Even using the very conservative inflation calculator numbers, that's 1800 Dollars today! I was too old for it in 1984 (15), which is good because my parents would never have shelled out 600 bucks on a toy robot. The tapes are almost certainly good. The one thing that goes wrong with cassette tapes is the pad falls off. You can glue the pad back on. I have pre-recorded stereo cassette tapes from the late 60s that still sound as good as they did in the 60s. Even the mix tapes and radio recordings I made as a teenager in the 80s still sound the way they always did, though they were made with a crappy boombox with DC biasing and permanent magnet erase heads. Tapes I made with good decks from the late 80s onward sound excellent. Most of them are copies of friends' records or CDs I was too cheap to buy.

Oh yeah... We saw the sites too. The state flower, the blue bonnets, are blooming. We saw the JFK spot. Where they shot the end of the movie Logan's Run. We had a blast.

The cassette player - perhaps a bit of lube on the capstan bearing might perk it up. Just a guess.
@RandiRain6 ай бұрын
Yeah... It was really bad. I did add some lubing and I got it to that point. Then running it back and forth helped. Not really my specialty.

It is amazing this robot is still around here's why. The wires in older tech. The plastic casing of the wires will disintegrate over time. Wow Wee for example....open any of their robots that are 10+ years old and you will see how the plastic coating on the wires turns to flakes. Omnibot was made with better wires.
@RandiRain6 ай бұрын
TOMY used quality parts. The plastic is really good.

1:15 You can try to put some tuner cleaner (like de-oxit or the WD40 brand of deoxit which is cheaper and is sold at Walmart) in a dropper/pipette. Then you put a drop or 2 on the phenolic and let it soak in. It works much better than spraying it or WD40 and lasts a very long time because it is now soaked in to the phenolic board. It's almost like loading up a felt washer with oil in a fan bearing. It also vastly reduces the chance of staining, which deoxit is known to do to some plastics. It also stretches out the supply of deoxit. Spraying is nearly always too much. The last time I purchased deoxit, it was 18 bucks for small can of maybe 5 oz. But you can't argue with the results.
@startedtech4 ай бұрын
I've never bought deoxit because the price always seemed ridiculous to me. Like $5 for a 11oz can of CRC (or other cheap brand) contact cleaner, if there's tougher corrosion then I guess I'll have to work a little harder!
@tarstarkusz4 ай бұрын
@@startedtech Yeah, the stuff is overpriced. I used to buy the radio shack tuner cleaner. That was the best. But I think they outlawed the chemical in it and radio shack is long gone.

What does the tape do? Is it programmable or something, or is it just for music? Did it come with a tape that said robot type things or something? Without the ability to program it or save some sequence of movements to the tape, it seems like a rather random addition. Again, great job on the repair.

The whole thing is done by sounds, and you could record the sounds that make it move, and then play it back.
@MrJDNJ6 ай бұрын
Yikes, how many batteries does that thing take? Seems like a good candidate for some rechargeable battery upgrades....
@RandiRain6 ай бұрын
It uses the standard 6 volt rechargeable brick battery that's been around forever, and two AA batteries for the clock, and four AA batteries for the remote.

Question could you custom build or add lets say Alexa in it & actually command it to do things at all?
@generic536 ай бұрын
Why aren't you keeping it for your collection?
@rivards16 ай бұрын
I want to see one of these things upgraded with a real computer, a wi-fi camera feed and some kind of intelligent control. It's mobility and dexterity are very limited but it could be made smarter and more control-able from a distance. You could defuse bombs or chase the dog when you're at work.
@RandiRain6 ай бұрын
There's been some people that have done stuff like that.
