I know first hand between the two that the original Mavic Pro is much more stable in high wind then the Platinum. The more efficient ESC and quieter props do have a practical downside - ability to stabilise and fly against strong wind. With the Pro I’ve never had an issue even in strong wind, a lil genius of an aircraft. The Platinum though can’t stabilise or hold position - very noticeably gets blown away in comparable wind. Working with them commercially to observe and take field data this is very important

One more point is that the Platinum runs at lower RPM because my guess is the props have a steeper pitch. With that in mind, I would not run the props on the old one because it might damage the ESC with a load they are not designed for.
@lifeingeneral91117 жыл бұрын
the forward movement you speak of is called translational lift effect TLE which happens around 11-15 kts
@richarddeleo66716 жыл бұрын
Just a side note I am sure someone else said below somewhere but the RPM is not the only thing that affects battery. When changing props they might have a different pitch so to move the same amount of air it can use a lower RPM but require more power. Think biking in a really high gear. You might be pedaling slower but having to push on the pedals harder. Two motors using the same amount of power but one turning a prop with a steeper pitch will have a slower RPM. The decrease in sound is likely due to the lower RPM and less turbulent noise.

Well done, guys. On the flight time tests, I think you need to account for the fact that you used the new Mavic Platinum batteries for both drones; could it be that the Platinum batteries are optimised to improve flight (in the Platinum drone) and may therefore account for why both drones only show a slight variation in flight times? What if you tested the drones with their respective custom batteries?
@aland16187 жыл бұрын
Here's something you should test for. The Mavic Platinum was slow to wind up so does that effect performance if racing. I mean does the prop response show slippage when making extreme flight changes. Is it even noticeable. I'm thinking the slow start up is slippage between the motor and the blades at first start and then they sync once the blades are in motion but I could be wrong. There could be an efficiency factor designed into how much juice is used to start up which could add a few seconds to flight time.
@readysetdrone7 жыл бұрын
Nope - there is no slippage between the motors and the blades. The spin up is designed do work that way. Not sure why, but it is definitely not slippage. The Mavic is not really a racing drone, but it is super fast in Sport mode!
@NaudVanDalen7 жыл бұрын
The perfect sound measurement would be if they were held in place with something and measured from exactly the same distance, because while flying it's hard to keep the same distance. A few cm makes a lot of difference. The new one is still going to be much quieter like you tested, but the exact difference may differ.
@justuslm5 жыл бұрын
The whistle is caused by the ESCs, the Platinum has sinus ESCs, while the voltage the regular Mavic ESCs put out is a square wave. This means it has worse efficiency (because it puts out the full voltage all the time and doesn't build it up and down, leading to the 3 minutes shorter maximum flight time, and this creates the whining noise, similar to how in soundwaves a square wave sounds compared to a sinus wave.
@headsupfiction85827 жыл бұрын

Indeed , sound measurment uses a logarithmic scale. Sound is a order of magnitude. I also think that our ears are more sensitive to high pitch noises. Therefore even if we had the same decibel noise , but one in lower sound spectrum and one in higher sound spectrum (both discernable), we will still get the impresion that the higher pitched sound is louder. I hope it makes sense.
@readysetdrone7 жыл бұрын
That definitely makes sense! Thanks for the comment!
@michaeltranchina63586 жыл бұрын
Nice job guys...Let me explain the sound issue...The sound from these drones are determined by the RPMs... What they did was increase the pitch of the props , which increases the torque, so they could lower the rpm of the motors...The new ESCs were designed to efficiently handle the higher torque at the lower RPM... To summarize, they shifted the power curve of the motors by increasing torque and decreasing RPM. The new props on the standard Mavic have the higher pitch=higher torque, so the RPMs will drop, but the ESC’s are not as efficient on this part of the power curve, so it is a bit of a compromise and battery life will probably be lower than with the more efficient ESCs.

FYI, in logarithms, working in base 10, for each 10 dB of is a change of 10 or 1 order of magnitude. Doubling or halving the sound level is a change of 3.01 dB (let's just round off at 3). So comparing between 89dB and 95dB is 6 dB or meaning the value of 89dB is 25% the sound power (remember sound energy is measured as a function of power) of the unit that was putting out 95dB of sound. Thanks for the video BTW, I've been entertaining getting a drone, but I am not very coordinated, so it needs to have enough smarts on its own to avoid walls, trees, and poorly coordinated drone operators.
@quentinbush7 жыл бұрын
You may be pleasantly surprised if changing from the original props to the newer design props on the older Mavic may extend its flight times. The Platinum versions flight time may decrease with older design props. The RPM of course are linear to the pitch design. I wonder if the same can be said for the Spark drone prop design which is something for DJI to think about..

-3dB is a halving of sound intensity. -6dB means a quarter of the sound of the Mavic Pro
@MrDoucheChill7 жыл бұрын
Actually, -10dB is halving the perceived volume, but 1/10th the acoustic energy. A 3dB difference is what is considered a 'noticeable' difference in volume by most listeners, but is a factor of 2 in acoustic energy. So your statement may be misleading as 'intensity' suggests human perception of sound, which would only be 'noticeable'.
Take a look at the Mavic Pro Platinum *BAM* And the original Mavic Pro *bam*

@ 10:45 you describe that a forward moving drone would fly longer. This is true, but not because any lift is generated. The downward motion of air creates an area of low pressure under a stationary drone. If the drone is moving, it is continuously moving away from that low pressure zone and the props can work more efficiently. If instead of just hovering, you put the drones into a "fly around point" mode, you would have likely had somewhat longer flight times. Nice job!! Oh. When I go to the DJI store. The Pro is $899 vs $1099 for the Platinum, so $200 difference, not$100 2:00. If you go with a refurb Pro (full warranty), the price is $799. The Platinum is really cool, but do you really think it's worth an extra $200-$300?

Decibels are measured logarithmically. Definition - A logarithmic scale is a scale of measurement that uses the logarithm of a physical quantity instead of the quantity itself. On a logarithmic scale, each tick mark on the scale is the previous tick mark multiplied by some number. The logarithmic scale can be helpful when the data covers a large range of values - the logarithm reduces this to a more manageable range.

From previous experience building and flying multirotors with all kinds of various props, yes, the Mavic will fly just fine using a mix of the two kinds of props. The Mavic's flight controller has no way of knowing if there's a different prop attached...for all the Mavic knows, that arm is just experiencing a slightly different wind...updraft, downdraft, etc. Flight controllers don't know the RPM of a given motor...all the flight controller knows is to either speed up the RPM (by telling the ESC to send more current to the motor), or to slow down RPM by doing the opposite.

I like that you guys are trying to show the differences but I have to disagree with the "scientific" level of your sound test. It looked like the sound level meter was being held directly below or nearly below the drone which would cause a lot of prop wash onto the mic thus greatly affecting the true sound level of the drone. It's likely that the blade design differences cause a different airflow under the drone. Also, just an inch or two difference in distance when so close can cause a significant change in db reading so there should be a method to keep the meter an exact and constant distance from the drone, ideally along a flat horizontal plane to the drone.
@cyoteone5 жыл бұрын
seems that your new motors are designed for those new propellers. Meaning, its like buying an aftermarket set of props that are quieter for the Mavic pro when in reality, the props are of a higher pitch (speed) than that of the original mavic pro propellers (power). Be willing to bet that the only test the Mavic Pro would beat the Mavic Pro Platinum at is how well it fights the higher winds during flight. Might be why the original Mavic seemed to hover better that the Platinum Mavic.

Thanks for the video. Needs more test being done when pairing platinum props with mavic pro. Lower rpm does not necessarily translate to better efficiency when flying in real life conditions because flight stability is determined by a number of other factors. In windy conditions, mavic pro may not fly as good with platinum's prop. That is something that needs to be further tested. My advice would actually to buy mavic pro, save the extra $100 to buy DJI drone insurance. Anyway, in the coming months there's a good chance that a new mavic model is coming in.

I have heard that same thing about the batteries. And these were brand new batteries at the time, so you may get a few more seconds of flight after you cycle the batteries a few times.

With dB every 3 dB increase doubles the amplitude so a 3DB difference would be half as loud
@bikepimp727 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly from doing car audio DB drags, every 3db is twice the volume. so that being said, the old Mavic was 4 times louder. In car audio in order to gain 3db you would have to go lets say from a 500 watt to 1000 watts, and to gain 3db over that you would have to go 2000 watts. But you will clearly hear the volume difference

The silver color is pretty cool but try finding it in the air is going to be very tough.

The rpms have to be the same when using the same props. The weight is the same, therefore the thrust created by the propellers must be exactly the same, and the only way for that to be the case is if they are spinning at the same rpms

Hey guys,... Thanks for another great comparison video. I wanted to point one thing out on the prop swap evaluation. You mispoke on the rpms between the platinum and the original mavic.During your test at 7:52 you said the rpms on the platinum with its own props were 480 rpms & bouncing between 475/490At 20:06 you said the original mavic with the platinum props were 490/487 rpmsThen at 20:16 you mispoke and commented the platinum props were 450 rpms which actually they were spinning at 475/490 like you said at 7:52 So in conclusion the platinum props on the original mavic are the same rpm as on the platinum mavic and I'd like too see you guys do a battery test on the original mavic with the platinum props running at the lower rpm vs the platinum with the original mavic props. I installed the platinum props on my mavic pro and they are definitely quieter. They don't have the annoying whining, swarm of bees sound that you can hear from a long way off. The big differences are at 50ft, 100+ ft and higher. You can barely hear the platinum props unlike the original ones. Thanks again... And keep up the great work !!

I was just handed a Mavic Pro to use for work. The majority of this video is about the battery life and decibels, but what I am looking for concerns the upcoming changes to Remote ID transmission. The Pro Platinum has been updated to have a Remote ID, but my understanding is it needs an external module. I can't find anything about the Mavic Pro, it's like it's been erased from existence. If I can get a remote ID module for the Mavic Pro Platinum, will it work (and should it even be the same ID?) as the Mavic Pro?

My understanding is that when using an external RID module, it will work on any drone that you attach it to. Also, I believe it can be used on multiple drones, but one at a time, but I'll need to learn more about that.

11:10 It's not necessarily the ESC and props. You need to repeat that test with the batteries swapped around.
@readysetdrone6 жыл бұрын
The batteries are exactly the same (except for the color).
@marcel9116 жыл бұрын
Ready Set Drone technically but no two batteries are identical.

I would have liked to see the Platinum props on the Mavic Pro for the sound test. Would there be a big noise difference between them? Would it be better to sell the Pro and get the Platinum or just upgrade to the Platinum props?
