First of all, I would like to commend the young man who did an excellent job comparing and contrasting the beliefs, customs, and traditions of both the Baptist and Methodist denominations. There was absolutely no attempt on his part to suggest one denomination was better or more acceptable than the other. As one who was born, raised, and serving as a certified Lay Leader in the Methodist church there have been some extremely controversial issues - many of them social - which have divided the church in recent years, but when it comes to comparing and discussing denominations and how they differ, the key is the foundation on which they are built. Anyone looking to see what the foundation on which the United Methodist Church is built can be found is found in the Apostles' Creed, which is the foundation for practically all the Protestant churches have been established as well. While the customs and traditions may vary and can be discussed and debated, it is this foundation that unites us all.

I have been truly interested in taking myself and child to church and had planned to just check out different ones until we find one we feel is for us. As a child, my Grandma and Dad took me to a Baptist church but I was baptized in a Lutheran church. There's one near us that I have been very drawn to and my daughter spoke up about it without knowing I had been thinking of it. It happens to be Methodist which is why I am trying to learn about it since I have never been to a Methodist church. Much love to you 💜

I was born in an Orthodox sosciety but never fully agreed with its practices and beliefs about certain things (like praying to saints and Mary, the icons in the churches, the leturgical nature of worship instead of a more personal one, the belief that certain physical objects can have the presence of God in them etc etc...) I'm now doing some research into different christian denominations and I'm astonished at how much the Methodist denomination agrees with the core of what I believe and also experience in my life as a new-born christian (after spending most of my life as an atheist because I was raised by atheist parents lol)! It's truly amazing, I'll look into it even more!

Worship isn't about you, Its about God. If your bored in an Orthodox service then that's your fault. Singing silly songs and dancing around is for fools, worship is meant to be solemn not ecstatic. Methodists still have iconography anyways. Icons aren't worshiped and the Jews literally built statues of seraphim in the bible. Icons have the most beautiful symbolism, the whole point of an icon is a celebration of the incarnation. He who made flesh holy.

A correction to this video is that most Methodists see Baptism as a celebration of prevenient grace, not as the New Birth. Like Baptists, Methodists teach that the New Birth is the time in a person's life when they realize the need for salvation, repent of their sin, and accept Jesus as their Lord & Saviour. It is a 'decision' each person makes and hence both Methodists and Baptists are known as proponents of 'decision theology'.

I find your videos on this very informative and I appreciate the effort you put into it. I currently attend a Methodist church and wasn’t really sure where they stood on many issues. I am still torn on the issue of communion. On the one hand they have an open communion and if I participate I’d blend in with everyone else. My wife and kids take communion. On the other hand, I am not a member of the church and not even a believer anymore (my wife is the only one there that knows this). Because of this I don’t know what the less offensive opinion is. Do I take communion with everyone else and lie? Or do I remain honest about it and abstain? I’ve spoken with the pastor but it’s only been small talk. Do you have any advice on this?

The invitation the pastor should be giving is this: "Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another." While the sacrament in the UMC is open table it's not wide open. You are not alone in partaking outside of the invitation.

I've come across many Baptists who do not believe only Scripture has authority. They of course follow it and no other religious text, but some are firm believers in following traditions and rules. I know Baptists vary on that though.

So… being a life-long Methodist from rural Alabama (that’s disgusted with the overall leadership within the conference), we’re basically a Baptist church minus the indoor pool. Being separated from “modern society” by being in the rural area makes it much simpler to follow Biblical teachings than it is in more metropolitan areas. As far as infant baptism and in regards to my personal experience within multiple congregations between Alabama and Georgia, most people seem to understand it now as a ceremony of promising, as parents and as a church family, to raise the child on a Godly manner. As far as not being able to lose salvation… So, are we then to believe that if you’re supposedly saved and redeemed at some point but later denounce Jesus and blatantly teach and live against Him that you’re still saved and Heaven-bound? As far as baptism, itself, it’s becoming more and more common in the Methodist church (that I’ve seen) for people to choose immersion… especially since if you directly translate baptism for either the Greek or Hebrew (I can’t remember which), it’s basically defined as full immersion. For communion, we also see it as purely symbolic. The fact that you’re probably correct in your info of many Methodist congregations means that this coming split can’t come fast enough. How do you teach and represent the Bible when you blatantly teach against the Bible?

I think that we should always question whether a church teaching or practice is essential to salvation. For instance, Does our salvation depend on whether we celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday? Or whether our salvation depends on whether we are baptized by sprinkling or submersion. We can start with what we believe are less significant truths and work up to the significant truths.

Thank you for sharing. I have great respect for the Methodist although it appears to be many different sects of the denomination. I shared an interest in joining at one time. However it appears it has been a twist in its origins. What is the difference between Martin Luther of Germany 🇩🇪 and John Wesley of England, besides their countries. What about Scotland? Is Christianity based on the practices of each country? In ⚓️ Maryland, it appears to be multiple sects of the Methodist denomination. Our state is known for being strongly Catholic, Methodist, and Quaker, due to the lords and Nobles of England and Germany. Their wealth and benevolence built Maryland’s wealth. My guess the power of influence causes so many differences and changes. It is my understanding Protestants existed in Maryland before Catholics due to their persecution in European countries. But different ppl tell different history. So it gets both confusing and twisted. Maryland was stated to be the birthplace of religious freedom. Today Maryland is mostly Secular including strong pagan practices of the dark world. If America is a new country compared to Europe possibly, as each group immigrated to America Christianity got a different twist and ultimately twisted. Christian history is important. It helps us understand the Bible is true and the behaviors of those in society. Christians have done great service around the world. Possibly Being a true Christian involves all this persecution and division because ppl don’t want the Good news to spread. Thankful 🙏🏽 God has more power than Christians.

All of the denominations can be confusing, but the plan of salvation is really simple. Read Romans chapters 3-10. That may seem like a lot of text to read, but it's always best to keep text in context, in my humble opinion. Based on what the Bible says, I believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God. In order to be saved, one must confess & repent from their sin, and ask Christ into their heart and forgive that sin. If you visit local churches, pay attention to what the Preacher preaches. It should be what the Bible says, not social, cultural, or political issues. God's word is all that is needed.

Sola scriptura means the Bible is the only source of information for a Christian's beliefs and practices. Others believe church traditions should guide them too. Jesus Christ often rebuked the church traditions and emphasized God's words. Most other terms are self explanatory except for sacrament. That means that performance of certain rituals like the Lord's supper are sacred in nature and do something to enhance the person's holiness. The Bible teaches we should do it as a remembrance of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. It doesn't make us more holy but when we do it, it should challenge us to ensure we are living pure and holy lives. Closed communion means only born-again believers should participate. Open means anyone can. Baptism should be carried out by believers wishing to identify with the body of Christ. Some denominations teach that it washes away sin.

Unfortunately, many Independent Fundamentalist Baptists are not holding to traditional understanding of Sola Scriptura (i.e. that the Scripture is the only infallible authority, but tradition including creeds, confessions, and catechisms has authority insofar they are in agreement with the Scriptures and therefore are fallible authorities in the Church) but they are holding to what we call as Solo Scriptura or sometimes called as Nuda Scriptura (Bare Scripture) that only the Scripture has authority, thus church, creeds, confessions, catechisms, church fathers, ministers, and other ministerial books outside of Scripture has no authority in the Church, and sometimes out of ignorance called “too catholic” if something has resemblance with the church catholic/universal. Btw. I'm a Reformed Confessional Baptist. Soli Deo Gloria! 💖

I look at both standard and king James because sometimes it's harder to understand the older English phrases. Comparing the two helps me make better sense of what I'm reading. If the standard doesn't make sense when comparing to the King James or vice versa, then I do more research on the phrasing as well as consider the original Hebrew or Greek. If I'm wrong in that, then give me more info because I'm at a loss at how comparing texts on proper translations (not altered versions like new age or Jehovah witnesses) could lead you astray.

The KJV has many mistakes and mistranslated bits, think critically and don't get brainwashed by nutty pastors. KJV only people are crazy and beyond help unfortunately, this probably wont get through to you as you are too brainwashed. Think critically and go beyond some silly sermons. Read the church fathers and actual theologians not some fool on a lectern.

The independence of a local church sort of allows it more freedom to interpret the Bible as it chooses allowing the Bible itself to be the church doctrine. It's sort of non-denominational. I like the idea of trying to be perfect in this life though because it's like Baptists don't even try to be perfect holding that it's all about getting people saved from hell. However if people strive to be loving well actually if they ARE loving. Trying doesn't matter if it doesn't get you there. But being loving would probably win more converts because people could come to church expecting help and they would get it thus since so many people need help they would always come back and hear the message. However striving to be perfect may not actually make you loving. In fact not trying to be loving might make you more loving. Catholics seem to be more loving even though they are sort of the most legalistic. Jews are also legalistic and yet seem to have a kindness about them. The Jews in the Old Testament saw God not as the wrathful Old Testament God but as merciful and loving. Besides the idea of eternal damnation is never mentioned in the Old Testament. Catholics Teach it and they do seem to be the most loving. Maybe the most loving church is kismet. It's unknown what creates a loving individual. The various combinations work for some and less for others. The good church is the one with the most loving members. But you can't predict what teaching will generate these qualities. All you can do is judge the tree by its fruit. If the members are good the church is a good one to attend because it will probably also make you loving and merciful. If it doesn't then try another church.

@@jeffcurtis5470 the issue we have here is that when Wesley spoke of perfection he was talking about the Greek understanding of perfection when most people think of the Latin view of perfection. An example of Greek perfection would be a basic boat that floats and gets you from point a to point b, it is a boat that is perfect in its boatness because it fulfills it's function, but it could be improved with a motor, a navigation system, a stereo, etc. Etc. The point being that Greek perfection leaves room for the struggle with sin and room for improvement. While Latin perfection means that something has achieved the absolute apex of what it could be. In the Latin sense you are correct nobody can be perfect in this life. However, in the Greek sense you are not.

But they should just be upfront about their beliefs. In my understanding of Methodist view of infant baptism is this. It is purely the responsibility or at that point a dedication of the parents of the infant and secondly the responsibility of the Church members to bring that Child up in the teachings of Christ. No way is the infant saved at that point if it’s life. The salvation should come later in the child’s life under its own desire to do so.

I don't understand the position that "perfection" is impossible, but that it is impossible to lose salvation. I agree that entire sanctification is impossible in the flesh (i.e., we will still sin and need to repent.) What if someone is saved, then some time in the future... 10 years, 50 years... sink so low in sin, and refuse to repent? You can say "Well that person wasn't a Christian in the first place", but sin is sin. If you accept that the saved can sin in the future, I think it is ignoring human nature not to believe that someone could sink so low and refuse to repent. What happens to them?

Not trying to start an argument, I'm honestly curious how that works... I'm definitely closer to the Independent Baptist side on almost anything, but an Arminian position that doesn't allow for someone to lose their salvation doesn't compute in my head, just looking for an explanation. To be fair when talking about The Wesleyan Quad, many people are turn off by the concept of “tradition.” I can see why, but what do we mean by this? We do not mean it like The Roman Catholic teaching on tradition. No, we do not. Rather, when I teach it I use the concept of “History.” How has The Church interpret this it is vast history, particularly within The Age of The Church Fathers? For example, the divinity of Jesus. Arian used scriptures almost as “sola scriptura” to argue Jesus was a created being and not God. How is it that all Evangelicals, Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox accept Jesus as divine? Well Wesleyans would assert: we believe The Holy Spirit guided those arguing against Arian, and Church History has accepted since its inception that Jesus is divine and we interpret scripture that way because of Church History or some Wesleyans would say because of Holy Apostolic Tradition or tradition. Again, I understand why some this word tradition is not very palatable, and that why I use History.

I am Baptist but I refuse to be classified as evangelical and fundamentalist. I am not going to conform to these terms. I like the flow of the Baptist service but I believe more like a modern Episcopalian except I don’t align myself with the Pope or the Catholic Church. I believe many people in church are not born again including some Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Catholic, etc. Please make sure you're right with God and ask him to save you from your sins if you have not.

Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist. I was saved in what is called an “Independent” Baptist church and attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield Missouri. Unlike The United Methodist church, the Catholic Church, whether Roman or not, and various Presbyterian denominations, technically, there is no such thing as a “Baptist” denomination. I’ve since left the independent Baptist movement and for almost 50 years been aligned with a southern Baptist church. There was just too much fussing and fighting amongst the independent Baptist movement. Obviously, at one time they were really being used of the Lord. As a member of a cooperating church, one church amongst thousands who cooperates, pools the Lord’s money, with others to spread the gospel, I can’t help but chuckle when some of my independent Baptist friends tell me, “Your preacher is told what to preach.” That would definitely be a case of the “tail wagging the dog.” Trust me, I have heard too many poorly outlined sermons preached by Southern Baptist preachers for that to be true!

Methodist ministers could own slaves and it was common to have segregated services for blacks. Times have changed and so it is with homosexuality today. Baptist churches also had slave owning ministers and promoted segregation as did other denominationsof Christianity. Just as with the debate on homosexuality today, slavery advicates had gospel pasages that were claimed to back up their positions. Religions evolve over time over all kinds of issues from a womans place in society, dress codes, divorce, unwed mothers etc. just my opinion.

Entire Sanctification is absurd on it's face. However, Sanctification is a real thing. You desire God and not sin, are seeking Him often, and are definitely not living in sin. There are a lot of Methodist denominations that still teach that. They identify as being a part of the 'conservative holiness movement'. Examples are the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Connection, Bible Methodist Connection of Churches, and Evangelical Methodist Church Conference.

I recently left the UMC for a Southern Baptist Church. The bottom line is that the council of bishops is made up of lifetime appointed bureaucrats that are more interested in saving the company rather than souls. I have no regrets on my move but I am trying to get myself reoriented to the differences. For the most part, I already leaned more toward Baptist beliefs than UMC. my parents UMC recently went to GMC. I hope this leads to improvement for them.

I am sorry you feel that way about the UMC, I have not had that experience in the WV UMC conference at all and I never made got that impression from the council of bishops, rather, they created a plan that was holding to the principle of religious liberties (each church congregation deciding the issue individually) that our nation was founded on, but the 2016 General Conference voted for the traditional plan which kept everything exactly the way it is.

Now the Roman Catholic Church is going Episcopalian.....like the UMC. I was in the Catholic seminary mid 1970s. I am glad that in June 1978, graduated from college seminary but didn't pursue further RC graduate studies. I will stand on the WORD OF GOD and not on false and incorrect teachings of "Roman Catholic" professors. Now even conservative RC priests are being silenced by the hierarchy here in USA...very a strange time we live in.

There are plenty of Christian ministries that do "do" the word, they are not just hearers only, not just a social club. Some of those ministries have a specific church connected with it on the side. The trick is to join an active Christian ministry and you will find people on fire for the Lord. (And maybe a church that is not just a social club)

This is a scientific issue. Gay people are born gay and is not an optional choice!!! Period!!! Yes, gay immorality is as horrible as heterosexual immorality, but a church should not automatically reject gay people anymore than Jesus would not automatically reject sinners! He would reach out to them and offer forgiveness and love! The "charity" component of the Methodist Church's rejection of gays is astounding!! Thank goodness that the young people of the world are rejecting this uncharitable response to gay people and are leaving churches in droves!!!

Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. I grew up Methodist predominantly in the Southern U.S. and I would say u wouldn't usually experience racism or anything like that today even n smaller rural areas.. The United Methodist Church tries to be very welcoming to others but that was not always the case n places like where I grew up.. I am Catholic now but I didn't leave Methodism because of anything to do with racism or anything. In general most mainline churches like the UMC have seen large declines n membership and I can say I have seen a few rural congregations close n my area n recent years.. Hope that helps.

I’m not very religious but I don’t condone homosexuality. It just doesn’t make sense from a logical standpoint of propagating and preserving the human species. The scriptures of all the Abrahamic religions condemn homosexuality. Therefore, if you claim to be a Christian, a Jew, or a Muslim, homosexuality cannot be a part of your life. Those are the rules. I don’t know what’s up with these new interpretations of the religions. Any time men start to manipulate and interpret the word of God for their own benefit and for the benefit of their congregation, the religion has been corrupted and twisted. Your religious organization has been infiltrated. I was raised in the Christian and Islamic faiths. My family members are mostly Christians and Muslims. I say I’m not very religious because I don’t actively practice or go to religious services. I blame that on my Aspergers Syndrome, extreme introvertedness, and sometimes extreme antisocial tendencies. I hate being around other people and stay to myself. It’s sometimes very difficult for people with Aspergers to believe in God simply because of the way our minds order things. Although I don’t actively practice and maybe I’m more agnostic than anything, I still adhere to the way I was raised. These morals and ethics will be a part of me forever. My morals and ethics, which can be based in religious teachings but be totally separate from your belief in god, just won’t allow me to ever accept homosexuality.
