Block fuel is sufficient to fly to your destination safely but what happens if we expect disruption during the sector? Maybe we need to de ice on a remote stand, perhaps there are TS’s forecast en-route or our destination? Heavy snow is forecast, how long can we hold if the runway is closed?
All these variables require sensible fuel planning and potentially additional fuel to be carried. In this brief tutorial I’ll discuss PIC discretionary fuel, why we’d take it and how much and hopefully you can apply it to your next virtual flight 😊

As always, excellent tutorial! Fuel is time, and we think of fuel in terms of time!

Careful, the information this video is actually useful in the real world and therefore almost certain to not come up on the ATPLs 😂

I used to work as a fueler for Swissport. Most of the time they wouldn’t mind 100-300 pounds extra. FedEx even took 800 pounds extra most of the time. Just depends on the airline and the plane. What would also happen sometimes is, given enough time, the gauges roll down as the fuel settles in the tank Or especially if it was a hot day and the fuel was less dense.

Maybe I can’t see the forest through the trees, but decoding the TAF to understand what timeframe it is referring to is something I struggle with.

Talking about fuel, Captain, Which situation burn more fuel? Engines on high power during take off/climb Or Engines during approach/landing, flying through all that drags in low speed.

Haha, yes. I’ve found VATSIM events are a legitimate reason to carry extra fuel! FD2S

Yank you very much! Something came up to my mind while watching the video but it wasn’t explained: what value do we put in the RESERVES field in the INIT REF page in the FMC? That should be what Simbrief say at FINN RES + ALT+ 0.6 ( or 1.2) ?? Thanks a lot!

FINN RES + ALTN In this tutorials flight plan that is 911 + 1351 = 1662 (So 1.7 in the FMC) FD2S

Curious... are there any penalties or consequences to the airlines if one of their fleet has to make a minimum fuel declaration? I'm sure there is additional paperwork for an actual fuel emergency, but what about the min fuel call?
@flightdeck2sim
@flightdeck2sim 2 ай бұрын
The block fuel is the legal minimum. Deceleration of a MINIMUM FUEL or MAYDAY call requires a safety report. It’s likely these calls will be made due to unforeseen circumstances. There will be an investigation to see how it got to that situation but nothing more 👍🏼 FD2S
