Please don’t do that it’s not designed to be worn that way and could do extra damage to your body or may not work properly. Try adding a padded sleeve over the seat belt or if possible adjust the height of the seat belt. There are lots of tutorials for quilted sleeves for seat belts. You might not even be covered by your insurance if you end up injured, if you aren’t wearing it the way it’s meant to be worn.

Regarding seatbelts: I'm not going to tell people one way or the other, but I will say that after hitting a deer on the freeway going 70 mph, the seatbelt locking up and the airbag exploding into my chest upon impact...it felt like I had been punched in my right b@@b by someone's fist!!! Now I'm VERY aware of making sure that seatbelt goes over the shoulder and completely BETWEEN "the girls" and never letting it slide in front of them because of an awkward fit. I never even considered that as a potential problem before. For me, lesson learned!

Endure that cut; as you head will not endure the steering wheel or the air bag. Better yet, get a belt pad to be both safe and comfortable. Hi Tracey! I know you think you have your seatbelt on, but really you just have it fastened. Yes, they can cut in, but you are well-equipped to make something that will cushion your chest/neck. We don't want you to be seriously injured if you have an accident. My father was killed in an accident long before seatbelts and air bags. The steering wheel crushed his chest. Please don't let that happen to you

I found nice pads that velcro on to the seat belt. Much more comfortable! Look in the car department of a big box store.

I made 2 quilts for 2 of my grandkids using Walmart fabrics. They came out absolutely beautiful, kids love them and they use them every day not worrying that they destroy a grandma’s heirloom quilt. So, is NOTHING wrong with Walmart fabric at all 🙂

Yard sales are a great place to find fabric! Recently I found a huge tub of premium quilting fabric for $1 per piece. It didn’t matter if it was a four yard piece or a one yard piece, still $1!! I was beyond thrilled!!!

Loved this video, Tracy! I'm not a beginner, so here's my take on some of the categories you brought up. Backstitching....I have never made that a priority, but I do backstitch when my piecing is a lot of tiny pieces. Patterns....I've always been a better seamstress and quilter if I follow a pattern; I don't trust myself LOL. But after almost 20 years of quilting, I look at the tutorials online. Some of the demonstrators cut on a cutting mat that has marks. I go back and figure out the cuts based on the video, and some of those patterns I have figured out. That way I don't have to buy them. Yes, quilting gets costly. Sandwiching the quilt...I am blessed to have a large hard wood living room floor, so I get on my knees (my husband got me a cushion...old knees need it!) and use those curved safety pins. That spray is awesome but as you say, it is expensive, plus you should open a window if you have breathing issues. Pre-washing--I tried to prewash once, and the fabric came out of the dryer so wrinkled, I said NEVER AGAIN, too much ironing. Colors running: I used cheap Joann Christmas flannel with lots of red in it. The red color ran, but fortunately not onto other blocks. So I just stay away from flannel with red in it. I wash all my quilts (any color) with 2 color catcher sheets. That seems to really work. My cousin always has trouble with red running, but it must be for another reason. Fabrics: I have used quilt shop expensive fabrics, cheaper Joann cottons, and Hobby Lobby.....no problems. I have noticed Kona solids are at Joann...they are cheaper than in a regular quilt shop, but the quality is not as good....thinner I think. Sorry for the novel, but I just wanted to share for anyone else too. In quilting there are no police or judges, thankfully!!! :)

Good morning, I always enjoy watching your videos as they are inspiring for all quilting levels. I watch your French Rose quilt and free motion videos often as a new quilter I want to accomplish both. Please take my next comment as a concern and not criticism. I too had the same issue wearing a seat belt and needed a remedy. When placing the seat belt under the arm it now removes the seat belt's ability to keep your torso from being thrown forward. My remedy was a seat belt cover on Amazon that's made with soft fabric to eliminated the harsh rubbing against my skin. It's attached with velcro so can be adjusted to anyone. With your creativity I'm sure you can make one and tweak it to fit you perfectly. ❤

I recently made a flag wall quilt; all of the fabric came from JoAnn, the red was Singer brand, tossed in four color catchers with the laundry (washed it with my black tops, some old, some new) had zero bleeding from the red or dark blues onto the white and there was only black on the color catchers.

My dearest Tracy- and additional readers- please find a way to wear that seatbelt correctly- as a former ER nurse (now hospice) the amount of potential trauma you could endure in an accident if not properly worn is life threatening- ( ex: horrific internal abdominal damage and the possibility of your torso being lurched forward and back causing a torn aorta) your family and this quilting world needs you❤

Exactly, I think I would rather no seat belt than what could happen with it wrapped across chest under arm. There are seatbelt strap pads, can even make them to keep them from cutting into you.

I have found using osinters tape on my machine makes an outstanding guide for new quilters. If you cut five or six short strips of tape and kayer evenly, then with your needle in the down position, press the tape in place. Straight seams and even every time.

OK I got a new machine and I picked up,that manual and read read read. It's the Bible of my machine. I love my machine. I'm practicing stitches. Mine has over 100 stitches. I'm going to learn what is stitch is good with what. I like landscaping quilts. Maybe someday I will make a traditional quilt but for now its what i love and enjoy

I’m with you! I own a stack of patterns and an even taller stack of quilting books, and I almost never use them. I do pick up bits of inspiration sometimes, and incorporate them into my favorite- scrap quilts! I’m currently using up my blue scraps and strips and am on my fourth top. Still lots of blue in the bins!!

Growing up patterns were expensive to buy when we’re making clothes so we would clone our clothes. Yes that’s not a new thing lol. So any kind of handcrafts have done whether it was knitting, embroidery, or sewing I tended to away from the pattern and do my own thing. Sometimes it ended up in disaster, but I was usually able to fix it. I got into quilting by accident in a year and a half ago and I just started figuring things out myself. In fact, I was following one of your tutorials on quilt as you go and didn’t watch the whole video and ended up going in a direction that was slightly different, but it’s become, my thing. So my point is that patterns are fine but when everybody’s making the same thing, it’s not unique anymore and it’s not your own thing. So I encourage anyone even if you’re just starting out to let the fabric talk to you and go with the flow and just create things and be happy with it. Don’t worry about what the police say.

I use one Shout Color Catcher sheet per yard of fabric and have never had a problem. Some may say I'm using too many but I'd rather "waste" some sheets than have a dye bleed.

I don’t prewash my fabric either, time is precious. If I think I might have a problem, I will test a small piece in a bowl with soap and water. If water changes colour then I would probably prewash or at least soak in water. Let dry and press. I am also leaning towards simple patterns that work up quickly, I’m not getting any younger and need to get my stash reduced. I am sure I will not have to make any purchases for a while. Love to see a second video

I make my own spray baste using a recipe on a site called string and story. If you google homemade basting spray, the string and story blog should pop up! I’ve basted many many quilts with this recipe and I have loved it! I do wash my quilts before I gift them and it washes the baste out.

The difference from Walmart/Joanns etc and quilting fabric stores, is the previous are first/second runs until they get it 100% right for the quilting fabric stores. They don’t want to throw it away. So it goes to the low budget stores to be sold. Even though it looks the same, there is a difference. This is what I have been told.

Some patterns I have a problem with and have to do extra reading...over and over and over until I get it or I will put it a side for another time. I own antique singers. 1927 singer 66-6 is my absolute everyday sewing machine. It does not back stitch however if you take 3 or 4 stitches in the beginning and lift your pressure foot and put it back through you basically just back stitched 😊 Love your channel. I have a confession. I have actually never owned a color wheel lol

I generally use a quilt pattern the same as a cooking recipe. It is a suggested starting point.

I backstitch when I piece quilts too. It is sooo aggravating to see a seam unravel, having to cut the thread to stick the unraveling part under the needle to sew it back up, then getting back to where you were when you spotted that dratted unraveling seam! And I feel it makes the piecing more 'sturdy', especially if the quilt is going to be washed a lot (kid's quilt or floor quilt for example). I found using a 'peeker' (a viewfinder tool) to view only portions of cloth helps me decide if they go together. That and a lamp with a natural light bulb. When I go to the store the overhead lights can make fabric colors look off so I carry a small light that I swapped out it's bulb for bulb that emits natural light. I always wash my fabric and here's why: Was the warehouse where it was stored sprayed with pest spray? If so, I don't want to be touching those chemicals. If it wasn't then I could unwittingly be bringing insect eggs into my house which could contaminate my other fabric.

Some great tips here! Instead if sk***ingredients a cat, my Mum had a phrase " Many a mickle makes a muckle", so if my pieces are mickles then maybe I'm muckling. So impressed that you can advise on quilting while driving, cooking or doing the laundry. And that food looked really good. I made macaroni cheese last week and after 2 mouthfuls it ended up in the bin. I believe that access to the Internet and Channels on KZbin both help and encourage those who are visual learners, especially giving tips and an end product to identify with. Thanks for this one x

I have a lot of allergies and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity so I have to prewash all fabrics before handling them. Anytime I've ever not done so, my sinuses stuff up, I have sneezing fits and my eyes burn. I also always use Color Grabbers to reduce the chance of color bleeding while adding my own starch solution, ironing or bleeding on a finished quilt. Usually, the only backstitching I do while piecing is on edges I know will be on the outside of the quilt top (as well as stay stitching 1/8" all the way around the outside edges once final assembly of all blocks is complete). I generally deliberately avoid backstitching on inside edges because I nearly always strategically iron seams to one side and "pinwheel" intersections on the back of my blocks. Backstitching just makes it way too labor-intensive and time-consuming to pick those stitches back out (and increases the chances of weakening or even fraying the fabric at those junctions) to separate the seams and pinwheel properly. (I understand that a lot of quilters might not like to pinwheel their seams, but I personally get a hit of endorphins every time I do it 🤩) I've tried many different methods for basting over the years (hand-stitched, pins, basting spray, washable tape, etc.), but my all-time favorite is Elmer's Washable School Glue. It is super easy, fast, mess-free (relative to basting spray that gets on every freakin' thing), non-toxic, inexpensive and washes out when you wash the finished quilt.

Hi Tracy, I like patterns that have a video with it. I need to see, hear, and do. I also have a lot of trouble reading some patterns. I’m a beginner so if I get a free pattern I usually make sure it has an attached video.

I too love the speed of the sewing machine.. it's here, it's done! Oh, when you said "sit and sew" my heart went pittypat ... I thread baste my quilts. After a few quilts you get a lot more speedy. I can baste a full quilt in an evening.

Im making my 30 yeat old granddaughter the quilt she chose which is, "Tall Pines by Lori Holt. It has thousands of tiny peices. I did make my own block with larger peices which would be easier. Hi! I never use patterns either. I think they look way too confusing. It would probably take me 5 years to complete one. I make my own patterns...in my head LOL. I usually do easy stuff like squares/rectangles. Whatever size the quilt comes out is a mystery until the end. LOL. I did recently try my hand at HST to make a pinwheel quilt. It's coming along beautifully. ... The end was funny, you put your camera in the trunk LOL!!!! Have a great one!!

Back stitching, I do it only when I assemble the main bigger blocks, sasching, borders, not the different little parts, they don't get manipulated much.

I started quilting about a year and a half ago. I didn’t know it would become a hobby…I just wanted to make my first grandson a baby quilt. I bought designer fabric at full price and hand quilted it. I loved it so much I learned more about my old domestic machine, bought a few more tools and cheap fabric from Joann. My first quilt was okay but I didn’t love the fabric quality and I invested so many hours on it I really think you should at least ‘like’ the fabric. So I started buying bundles on sale from suppliers of designer fabric online. I bought more and better sewing tools and watched hundreds of hours of KZbin videos like yours. To keep the cost down I also stopped buying bundles of precuts and started buying yardage of fabrics I liked at a great sale price. I’m like you and don’t really like patterns. I like the process of making my own designs. I always pin baste my quilts to help keep the cost down. After all, I never sell my quilts…every quilt I’ve made has been throw size or smaller and are given as gifts to people I love for all sorts of occasions or no occasion at all. I love watching your videos for inspiration ❤

Like you I discovered I love EPP. I find it so relaxing. The great thing about it is there are so many possibilities; small quicker projects, large projects that can take years, a quick block for appliquéing to something to pretty it up, even 3D EPP to make decorations or fabric bowls, even the way you go about doing EPP has so many options. All I know is it’s highly addictive and I love it, it really should come with a warning. We all love sewing with beautiful fabrics but I hate the way some fabric snobs hide behind phrases like quilt shop quality and traditional quilting when the whole ethos of quilting came from need and reusing fabrics that could no longer be remade into other items of clothing. Use what you can afford. Ultimately to quilt all you really need are needles, threads, scissors and fabric everything else is nice to have but not necessary.

Terrific video, covered a lot of ground. Some people are better at writing patterns than others, I don't have difficulty following the good ones. I tell everyone the only rules in quilting are safety rules, everything else is opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I pick & choose what I want to do and generally do that which gives me the best results.

Great tips! I think as a beginner, the MOST important thing to learn is how to use your machine (I just learned it can thread my needle!! and I have had it for over a year) and learn how to do a consistent 1/4 inch seam (which was harder than I thought). Also, measure twice, cut once! I keep hearing that some patterns are easy, so far I have tried (only 4 patterns) and they were clear as mud to me - however, that was partially my fault as I wasn't able to lay out 338 blocks on the floor (having cats... nothing goes on the floor that isn't instantly laid on or played with) I found a different way to do the layout and it sort of worked out for me. Another wanted scant 1/4 inch seams on block but 1/4 inch on the rows/columns - that is a no from me. One or the other! Also I like (no, I love) me some square quilts, so I often change the number of blocks or layouts. And then there is quilt math... < ---- we are just not good friends....

I use needle and thread to baste stitch and use large safety pins, too. I'm fairly new to quilting...okay...I did my first one at age 14 and I'm 60 now, but didn't do any more until about 7 years ago. Anyway...I make my quilt designs up..thanks for explaining the terms!!
