Let's see what 23s bring to me :D *What do you think about this video? Super kudos to this controller for saving the aircraft. Why would they change the direction of the departure? I think they misheard the Heading of 130 instead of FL130. If the ATC did not notice the CCA428, this left turn'll make them fly into the Lantau Peak (3068 ft)

Happy birthday, Victor. Chinese pilots flying in Chinese airspace never use flight levels like this, Hong Kong is the only part of China that uses them. So when they hear a three digit number it is usually a heading.

It's scary to hear and watch how close was this flight to a total disaster and even MORE SCARY was you could hear the sense of urgency from the ATC (more than the pilots). It was out of instinct that she didn't use ATC language at one point by saying "turn right" --- my goodness. WELL DONE HONG KONG!!! And, so proud of the professional and sharp ATC.

Given that English is supposed to be the international language of flight, and non English speaking pilots are supposed to have passed tests to a given standard in English, this pilot's English was far from acceptable. And if you want to hear poor English and indeed see poor flying, bordering on dangerous, look up all the issues Air Asia X have, even in Australia. At one stage only a couple of years ago, there were eight investigations going on around the same time in Australia, involving Air Asia, both in the air, and even on the ground. Pathetic airline, hiding behind bullshit lies about their incidents.

Misunderstand FL130 to heading 130 could happen to anyone in radio, no matter how good English speaker you are! Maybe some correction here: The mountain at terrain alert should be more south by the green route abort 3cm on the map, that is the true 3000 feet mountain not the mountain on the green route. As that little mountain in "Tai O" village not tall, but the most dangerous terrain for the "Lung Tsai Ng" mountains all the way to the south are high enough to make them crash if they didn't change the direction. Still a close call. But there has a serious matter afterwards: Air China refused their flight crew error and questions about the air traffic control officer’s directions. WTH with this? All departure route for VHHH was set there long ago pilot MUST follow.

Jo Fox she could have spotted that deviation to left a bit sooner, i would say. Knowing, that the flight was following a SID procedure. Those first few minutes after departure, when the pilots are cleaning up the aircraft, raising the gear, raising the flaps, setting climb speeds, could have distracted them, and made them think they passed PRAWN fix, where they then are allowed to turn left to Rumsy, well clear of the high terrain. A lucky flight crew.
@rubenvillanueva27536 жыл бұрын
Basil Alzubaydi listening to the tape provided, i can only discern that she had three (3) other aircraft, and they were all in climbing phase. Three, plus Ac428 does not put this into a very busy scenario. It is great that she corrected the deviation before it became a disaster,. I have in my career seen this happen, wether it was an early turn or busting an altitude restriction on a SID, one corrects it, as she did and you press on with your other traffic.

jahurz93 wow, this HK air traffic controller said ”this shit”, really good English skill. I think some Chinese pilots can manipulate the English language pretty good. If any pilot made any trouble caused by their language, then just file a complaint or a safety report. Judging people by their nationality is really low.
@jahurz936 жыл бұрын
Am not judging by their nationality. Just stating what we experience in our region when they come in. There are a lot of good China folks with very good english especially those flying the long haul sectors some of the best instructors are even from china. There are just unfortunately many with poor basic english due to rapid expansion and that is unacceptable when it comes to flying. Redcap, Singaporean and Malaysian crew have been filing reports because of the potential hazards. LOL. A simple instruction to fly into heading 230 and they seemed to be unable to get 230 message i dunno how many times they've asked to double verify that atc had to ask vicinity pilots near it in the air to HF the message to them when the instruction and audio is very clear. In certain times our own local pilots would message them over in mandarin to get the instructions straight and understandable to them but if we dont have any chinese speaking crew around then its a long waiting game for others. Not asking them to sport a polished brit accent but just a basic command and hearing. I believe if the mainland low cost carriers implement full CPDLC when flying to foreign sectors the issues could've been reduced in great numbers but sadly not all of the airlines have them onboard and we can only sent it to some of the airlines having them.

They would not use FL160 for 16,000 feet. It only changes to flight level at 18,000 feet. This is where the FAA set it. At this altitude, everyone sets there altimeter to the same pressure levels and that way they are all flying at their designated heights relative to each other. If there flight level is FL200, they may not be at an actual altitude of 20,000 ft, but they will definitely be spaced 1000 ft from someone at FL210. That is my understanding anyway.

An ATC in HKG once told me, there was a Chinese airline pilot who cudnt tell "red" from "west". He instructed the pilot to push back with red procedure (can't rmb exact wording, but sth like that) and the pilot didn't get it at all and asked more than once "west??" ...

Air China now flying to RUMSY.......... ATC: don't give a damn where you're flying raise you're nose up EXPEDITE climbing before you hit the mountain.... that ATC lady was AMAZING keeping everyone so safe on that flight.

I maybe guess the flight crew lost situational awareness for some reason during SID. The PM did not found and correct the PF‘s or autopilot's error. Cockpit resource management may be a problem.

I like VHHH controllers.. flew by there a couple times.. They always give instructions no more than three items at a time.. (altitude, heading, expected STAR, runway in use, speed adjustment, etc) on the other side of the world.. they just give you like 10 items in one setting and expect you to repeat it word by word... we should learn something from VHHH

I agree. I do find the amount of data shoved from most ATC intimidating. Furthermore, these Hong Kong controllers were more discernible than many controllers for whom English is their first language.
@kkho21986 жыл бұрын
until the current generation, english is a well-learnt (and official) language of Hong Kong. not exactly first language, but we do have high standards of it.

It strikes me that when my mother suffers even the tiniest inconvenience, she is 400 times more hysterical than an air-traffic controller who has only seconds to prevent a massacre

Why are you comparing your mother to a random person? I mean we can all learn to be calm but there’s reasons why certain people aren’t fit for certain jobs

Ok that's it I was going to book Air China from KLAX to RPLL for my flight this week because they're really cheap. I think I'm sticking with Philippine Airlines.

Outstanding job by ATC! Calm, professional, clear. That pilot should face some discipline though.
