I would like to say that it took me well over 20 hours of solid repetition; viewing this video, pausing, looping, slowing down and starting over to get these 3 modes (melody, chords and bass) committed to memory and under my fingers. I have since been able to branch out and play along with Paula cole's version, Miles w/Adderly, Chet Baker, and Eva Cassidy's versions of this song. I cannot stress enough how rewarding it is to be in this position of accomplishment. When Jim said it will be a lot of work, he was not bullshitting. It is a lot of work and well worth it. Thank you, Jim for this GREAT lesson.

You are welcome Frederick. Learning to play anything well takes tons of work. Good for you. :)

20 hours isn't so bad all things considered. I should commit and spend the time

Great comment … and I’m with you 100%. At first I couldn’t really see the need to play the melody and chords but now that I’m on it I can see the wisdom. And you’re right, it’s a TRUCKLOAD of hours but so worth it as you say… opens other doors. Still playin’ along with you Big Jim … what a gift you have given us who REALLY want to get better. You showed us the way, clear as day.

I'm with you..I love the struggle and the feeling of accomplishment..ive been playing 35 years. But 9 years ago I got serious about learning and I play daily...and it's life-changing. I've progressed more than I ever thought possible

I understood Joe passed away Feb 2021. I am just now after 50 years as an ear player getting around to his lessons. What a marvelous individual, musician, teacher. The accolades are many and hail this gentleman, and I mean, gentle, in the highest regard and esteem. Here I am today finally learning "Autumn Leaves" like it's supposed to learned melody and chord structure. God, Mr. Stinnett makes all this so damned easy and here was for years toughing it out like a dumbass.

I have just become interested in Jazz & walking bass lines. I have just discovered Jim Stinnett. Its such a MASSIVE shame he is not with us anymore but still would like to thank him for his passion, his communication skill, his teaching clarity, his ability to make learning fun & his beautiful charisma & smile. I will now watch & learn from all his videos. Thank you Jim. You ARE amazing! From a Londoner living in Iceland
