Thanks Jared, I'd been looking for some help in getting a strong line down for this standard. I was just wondering, what software do you use for notating the bass lines?
@JaredPlane9 жыл бұрын
Claviceps I use a free notation software called, Musescore.
@seoparse5 жыл бұрын
You should take into account that besides playing quarter notes you should also learn how to build half-note lines with some offbeats and runs on every 2 or 4 bars, etc etc... The better way to do this is to transcribe the lines from the recordings (or to get some sheet music) and get a lot of practice in the real band. I prefer to use more roots and fifths (especially in intro and A1/2), scalewise motions with chromatic approaches in tunes such as Autumn Leaves (especially when performed with the singer or in "cool" manner) are preferred in climax of the tune. Anyways, that approach when you write out your line is very important. Jared, you was the man who inspired me to do it when I just started. When I play the tune by chart "on the fly" - the lines seems to be not so smooth and accurate. Writing lines helped me to improve the sense of diatonic function. Thank you for your lessons.

Several reasons: it helps you to think ahead when walking. You can use these written ideas on gigs. It helps with understanding harmony and chord progressions. It helps with bass clef notation and sight-reading.

I saw 'walking jazz standards #1 autumn leaves', and i want to know the song that is played from the beginnig to 20 seconds!

이예진 Hi Yejin. It's one of my own songs. It's called, Just Around The Corner. You can find the recording on my channel, and download the sheet music from Jaredplane.com. Thanks!
@user-ju1vx6oy4k7 жыл бұрын
Jared Plane Thank you I found sheet in your homepage! but what's the meaning of 'concert' sheet??
@JaredPlane7 жыл бұрын
이예진 Great question. "Concert" refers to instruments that are "non-transposing", such as piano, guitar, violin and vocals. "Bb" charts are for tenor saxophone and trumpet."Eb" charts are for the alto saxophone.

Jared, great lesson. Got a question. I know to get gigs I need to know standards. Where versions of a song should I try to learn. I recorded Chet Baker playing Autumn Leaves and that didn't go so well. Thanks
@JaredPlane7 жыл бұрын
Michael Addiego Hi Michael. I use the Hal Leonard Real Book volume 6 for just about every gig. It doesn't have every standard, but it's the most popular version. Hope this helps.
@michaeladdiego77867 жыл бұрын
Jared Plane Jared, thank you so much for that info.
@JaredPlane7 жыл бұрын
One other thing, it has a chart for Autumn Leaves, but it's in the key of E minor, rather than the more common G minor key. Just keep that in mind! :)
@michaeladdiego77867 жыл бұрын
Jared Plane thanks. I'm looking at the Hal Leonard books out there and there's one for B flat instruments and another for C instruments. Which one is it. This is probably a dumb question
@JaredPlane7 жыл бұрын
It can be confusing, I know! I assume you're a bass player, so I'd go for the bass clef version. Bb and Eb versions are for horn players, and C versions (or "concert" versions) are for regular treble clef readers, piano, guitar etc.

At bars 5 through 8 (as I see) you play Adim(b9) - D(b9) - Gm and Gmadd9 instead of Amin7(b5) - D7 - Gmin7 and Gmin7.... Why like that?? Thanks already!!
@samjyang42094 жыл бұрын
D7 can have virtually any kind of tension chord and as long as 1) it sounds great and 2) your band knows that the tension is there. (This is because dominant 7 is a chord built upon such dissonant sound, tritone, that you can put any seemingly dissonant sound on top of it and it'll work). In this instance, the song is well known to have b9 tension on the D7. But if it works for your ear, it can be D7(#9,b13), D7(#11), (D7(b9, b13), D7(9,13) - literally anything - rather than D7(b9). Hopefully that helps.

The videos I released back then were of lesser quality than what I produce these days due to many reasons (lack of video-editing skills, knowledge, confidence on camera etc), but then again it's free to view for anyone who has access to the internet, and what I receive in ad revenue amounts to essentially nothing. Feel free to check out some of my more recent videos and see what you think - the quality of the information and video production is much improved. Anyway, thanks for your comment.
