I'd like the developer to take these notes and use them to update their game. Mainly the physics behind the straight punches v the looping punches, if someone developed the right boxing sim I think it could be a seriously good tool to have

My limited understanding of the platform tells me it's not practical at this point. The Oculus Quest is a fairly limited piece of equipment in terms of VR, but it's the standard in terms of mass adoption. For a while, I had a (much older) Oculus Rift before 'upgrading' to a Quest 2. Playing this game, Thrill of the Fight, was much worse on the Quest 2 compared to the Rift because the Rift has more cameras and has better tracking on/view of the sides. On the Rift, I could block punches to the side of my head while on the quest they would always hit me if I brought my hands to the side of my head. As far as the Quest was concerned, my hands just stopped existing. 😅 My guess is the nature of how the controllers are tracked is just not very friendly to making the physics of punches more realistic, just based on experience and intuition. I'm not a developer so I could be wrong (and would love it if I was proven wrong), it just seems beyond the scope of what the current standard headsets are capable of. I wouldn't be surprised if a more elaborate rig using something like Valve's setup could do a better job, but the majority of developers are going to make things for the platform that most users are on. It's "a waste" to develop for the more expensive, feature-rich headsets.

@silverfireVRgaming
@silverfireVRgaming 8 ай бұрын
@@ZovcDrafts While you are correct that inside out tracking is more limited compared to lighthouse tracking, the Quest 2 can track things much better than the Quest 1 could, and the Quest 3 tracks even better. The Quest 3 also has different camera placement, allowing for better tracking pretty much everywhere except directly above the head, in addition to improvements in the controllers themselves. So, while I haven't tried the scenario you described on my Quest 3, I wouldn't be surprised if it were able to do it. Also, Thrill of the Fight was developed for the Quest 1 and I don't think it really got any updates taking advantage of the newer Quest 2 stuff, let alone Quest 3. So the fault for the blocking on the sides not working could well be simply that it was developed for the most limited of the Quest devices, and if it were redone (like, say, a sequel were made), it would work better. And the punching favoring hooks and whatnot is more a matter of game design than limitations of the hardware. As I mentioned in a top level comment, VFC (Virtual Fighting Championship) has better mechanics in some ways, and is a newer app that is still being worked on and improved upon. It does have more arcadey stuff like stamina and combos, but if you ignore that stuff, it's a solid fighting game just like Thrill of the Fight, only also multiplayer so you can fight other players. I mention it only because I feel it does a better job at the shortcomings you point out, yet is also on the "limited" platform of the Quest devices. :)

As a swordsman I was hugely impressed with WI fencing as part of the WI oplymics package which is now obviously a very old game - atleast 20 years. Some one put way too much attention to detail in this - it not only uses real stances and form but know what stances and form you are using and adapts and counters. Its amazing how detailed and realistic some games can be - and equally amazing how off the mark others are.

Can attest that TOTF is great cardio and most realistic boxing mechanics I’ve tried in any game. I’m not a boxer but years of martial arts experience. Couple of points I’ve noticed: 1. So far, it’s hard to play the inside game effectively (getting close and effective trowing hooks and uppercuts). As a grappler and striker, my tendency is to get close, and the game doesn’t seem tailored to that style. 2. To be successful, it seems better to wear the opponent down some, then instead of closing the distance, backing up and t-ing up combos from slightly further away. 3. The game by default is set to move comfortably, meaning that punching power is scaled each round, roughly adjusting max power to your max effort speed. 4. The dev is great and responsive on Reddit, awesome to get feedback from the ones that know best and are so helpful.

Hard disagree there my friend, barring an outrageous run up. I not talking about literally in a clinch, I’m talking about a tight uppercut or hook. When it’s close, you can get your full body completely in grounded support. Granted, this may be a bigger factor in heavier weight classes. So if you are light and relying less on mass and linkage, vs speed, then … fair point, I somewhat talked myself out of the hard disagree ;)

Work on developing your hooks. If you can throw a fast hook from the bleachers, you'll get lots of knock outs. You'll know when you see the orange or red damage indicator, and they grunt, and they get a wound on their face. 4 punch combo, 3 jabs and a hook, and they'll be on their back if you got good speed behind them.

Quest 2 and Quest 3 are about the most user-friendly electronics devices on the market. VR inherently is incredibly user-friendly too. I've put my Quest 2 and 3 on people that have never used anything beyond a simple computer, and they immediately understand all the UI (user interface), because you just literally press the buttons or point a pointer at it, and then play the games. The mixed reality portion of it menas you do not have to take the HMD off to see the real world, it's a lot like what people thought AR technology would be like. I have VR sessions where I just don't take it off to do other things around the house, can watch videos with a floating screen, clean some dishes, eat, drink, talk and interact, pet my dog, lol. These systems are built to introduce people to this technology, it's incredibly seamless to reality for anyone to use. Most important part is to make sure to set it up correctly, there is a "sweet spot" in the lens for the best clarity, like glasses, so you are going to move it around your face until you find that spot. Make sure to set your IPD (interpupillary distance) correctly, and of course make sure the headstrap and top strap is on tight but not too tight that it is uncomfortable. Next tip is to stick with teleportation locomotion, and avoid artificial locomotion until you can get acclimated. Baby steps into that realm first, and make sure to leave VR as soon as you feel discomfort. A lot of the "magic" (presence) of VR is convincing your lizard brain and subconscious that VR is reality. If your lizard brain and subconscious start to think that VR makes you feel discomfort or nauseated, you will get that feeling even you think about VR, so to avoid that, just do short sessions of VR, work on staying longer and longer of the course of a few months, maybe 30min to an hour every few days, and then pump the number up slowly. VR is an amazing tool, one of the greatest consumer innovations there is. By far, it is the best entertainment for the cost, and there is an insane amount of content. More so if you stream a gaming PC to it to play more graphically impressive and realistic games. Quest 2 is only $200, btw, it's pretty crazy how low the cost is. Games are really cheap too, everything from $5-$35. I would recommend the Quest 3 ($500), biggest difference in the Quest 3 has color mixed reality, while Quest 2 is black and white mixed reality. Both have great resolution and really bright colors, both are super light and comfortable too, especially if you get a 3rd party headstrap for them. Another difference is that Quest 3 controllers do not have a big tracking ring, so they are a little less cumbersome. The kit you see in the video is the Quest 2.

1) You should try VFC (Virtual Fighting Championship) as well, if you haven't. It's got stamina and combos like a fighting game, but I feel some of the mechanics outside of that are better than Thrill of the Fight. 2) Thrill of the Fight used to support bHaptics vests, which allow you to "feel" the punches by vibrating where you get hit. bHaptics updated things and the developer of the game didn't update his implementation, so it no longer works with the game, but perhaps in the upcoming sequel, he'll put the update bHaptics back in. Would add even more to the game.

I'm pretty sure you all realized it but the in game the only shots that count are to vulnerable areas, punching to break down their guard, weaken their arms, being able to pull down their guard won't work so that could be the reason why the boxers had a difficult time. You really can't feint in the game. I think if you mentioned to them to just pretend it's mitt training; hit when an area is open, see what opens up and hit again, and repeat, they would have excelled quicker. Also don't bother with upper cuts I could never get it working.

Those are the basic differences with video games. A lot of them will simplify offense and defense to an absurd degree. I don't know if any VR Boxing game is ever going to address this. I recall a Java Physics boxing game trying to although I don't play it much myself- it's a completely different beast from most any other boxing game I've played

Thrill of the Fight is amazing as a workout tool, and I love it for that. I'm a terrible boxer, both in real life and in the VR game though, but it's just enough time per round and always feels good as a workout... and honestly, the first week of playing it in VR, I wasn't even able to finish rounds. I was going super hard, way too hard because I was like, this dude isn't going to hurt me if I just whale on him. Outside of gaming on VR, this is easily my favorite. It would be interesting to see though, if the Thrill of the Fight devs could work with real boxers to develop a pro mode where proper form for punching and blocking was developed. It's a VR game at the end of the day, it's supposed to be easy to get into for the vast majority of people, but it does indeed seem like a legit option for boxers to train with given a little tweaking.

Another reason his punches probably weren't taking the guy out is that the game automatically reduces the force of each punch if you punch too hard. They should have learned the controller holding techniques people use so they could pick the one they like the most. That makes it easier. Also, the speed of the controller movement matters more than anything. Ocular has IR sensors so it needs to be able to see the movement which is easier to with wider punches like hooking.

@@E2O10 okay... but seth in all likelyhood does, especially considering it's a business expense. Like yeah, I don't know his financial situation and it'd be weird and off-putting to speculate too much about it, but I think it's a fair assumption that updating a pretty outdated prop he's used in 5'ish videos is a worthwhile investment it's just my 2 cents

@@E2O10 it's neither a request nor "do better", it's just my personal feedback. and it's based on his channel size, having sponsors, and general success rate of his vr videos. income per view swings wildly, and again, don't really like this avenue of speculation aboutthe financials of someone I don't know, but as a broad assumption I believe it's reasonable

@@lusteraliaszero "aah c'mon, it's 2024, gotta update the rig if you're gonna keep running this vr bit, ... give people the best chance to have a good time, no?" - that's exactly how it reads, that's why i pointed it out, no other reason. The point being, consider how your statements read - the intent is secondary.

The reason I find Seth doing better was because he wasn’t throwing the fast volume and he was out boxing. Hits register better for me atleast when I throw less long combinations and when I through hard shots not fast flurry’s. Same with in fighting if I am too close I find my shots don’t register as well. Quest 3 is a lot smoother and a lot more shots land and register.

The VR gamer has his fights on custom easiest settings mode a knock out to the gloves not a hope not even in easy mode would that be possible. The pros are on hardest settings. I have this game 4 years and since I joined a boxing class my skill level has gone up 💯

I was at CES two weeks ago and there was a cool demo a small company had setup where you put on a boxing glove packed with sensors and IMU's and it can tell you how hard you are hitting and what kind of punch you threw. I was hitting with about 200lbs of force with an 80% punch. I thought it would be much better if the glove had IMU's which could be paired with a VR headset and a couple punching bags, as well as a ankle sensor to detect kick power (at least with roundhouses, don't know about front kicks). If such a device set existed, you could put on a VR headset, some gloves, go to a gym with a bunch of bags, and do a super intense bag workout which can create fight scenarios using the bags as opponents, and you could also record a play session and replay it to get a review -- how hard did you hit? did you use correct form? Was your head looking at the right thing? etc. As a VR programmer, I think this would be really cool to make and I think it would end up being the best kickboxing app for VR in the world. Especially for MMA style gyms.

Hi, ive found that those custom rubber strap / cover for the controllers affect tracking accuracy, the rubber part does cover some of the internal infra red trackers. You can cut a hole in the rubber at the correct position to fix it, but i just ended up using the controllers without the rubber straps for thrill of the fight

"not getting hit back" I suppose isn't normally a thing to worry about in VR unless you have a haptic suit for it that is 😂 still this was interesting to watch nonetheless.

I used to play this a lot. The main problem I have with it is the gauging of power. Like, I could go full on 230 lb person throwing over a hundred punches a round with all my might and it does nothing, but if I fight someone, like the sparring partner and just lightly warm up, then the next opponent will get knocked out pretty quick with just a little heat no matter which opponent I choose or difficulty. But if I go all out on the training partner and then try the same thing on the next opponent, my punches do nothing. The Right rear hook seems to hit exactly where its supposed to. The left hook does nothing for me. They walk right through some of my punches... Yeah and also they can just land one lucky hit and knock you down. I can land literally 200 punches a round and they just drop me with one. It is possible to knock guys out with other punches but if it scales down the force of your punches then sometimes you can't do anything except rack up points.
