4:24 actually, runway 18 because of its independence to most other runways when used for departures, is the primary departure runway until a tailwind component of 10 knots. Its closed at tailwind of 15 knots, but with a wind at 02010KT youll have arrivals 07L/R Departures 18/07C for example. Usually the runways are not assigned by closest, but the SID the aircraft fly. 07C/25C is usually only used for northbound departures while everything else tends to go out of runway 18. There are a lot of dependencies between arrivals and departures on different runways depending on the SID (there are several different ones for each waypoint sometimes even 4 from the same runway, (for example there are MARUN 7M/6F/3W/9G/9N all from runway 25C but taking completely different flight paths to the same Waypoint in the end) depending on the aircraft, Time of day, etc. and each of them is to be used only when a certain part of the approach (due to conflicts with missed approaches) of another runway is clear. They are not all independent from runway 18 too. As a virtual controller at EDDF that is the hardest thing here in the tower, figuring out who can go where, and when. Sadly Tower3D doesnt simulate all the different SIDs. That would make Frankfurt a lot more fun / challenging.
@martinbarry96623 жыл бұрын
A typical config for EDDF would be landings on 07L/25R and 07R/25L with take-offs on 07C/25C and 18. 36 is never used, it's always 18 unless the tailwind component gets too high. P1 is rarely used because of the complex taxi through the cargo area, preference is for P and N11. N and L work best if you treat them as one-way, N westbound and L eastbound.
@vollelektrolysierer57733 жыл бұрын
Yeah in reality, you woudn't be able to use 07L/25R as the only landing runwayas it is to short for the really big brids (380, 747, MD-11)
@laulpoecken3 жыл бұрын
and to clarify if tailwind for 18 is greater that 15 knots then it is just closed. 36 doesnt even exist IRL due to the close cargo stands and buildings right before the rwy18 threshold

I thought it was bad etiquette to butt in with your request while the controller is expecting readback from an aircraft

Tip for getting planes to take the closest route to a runway is to just say: LAW1 RUNWAY 25C. If you don't give them the taxiway designations they will usually find the shortest route themselves. I feel strange doing like that, but there are a few instances on different airports in the game that is the only way. Like your videos. They are teaching moments for me, thank you!

In Europe plane's are only cleared to land whenever they are next to use the runway

It's quite funny - I subscribed to you after watching some of your gaming videos but I never realized you were a former ATC :D Greetings from a Frankfurt Controller :) Ops wise, the other comments have said almost everything. I might add, that in Frankfurt, all taxiway movements except for Y, M, R and P, including all pushbacks and tows, are controlled by Frankfurt Apron (121,755 121,855 or 121,955, that's what I do) The Apron Controllers sit in different towers and work for a different company than the controllers working the TWR frequencies, Delivery and the 4 taxiways left (Frankfurt Ground, 121,805). It's a quite unique system in Frankfurt.

You couldn't get a plane to move because you kept using the wrong callsign. You kept saying LAW170, but it was LAW172.

Yep! Good spot! Another of those game-y issues - a real pilot would have said ‘was that for Lattitude 17 two?’ and everything would have kept working normally! Good catch!

EDDT 5:24 is Berlin-Tegel, situated in the northern Berlin borough of Reinickendorf. During the Cold War being a part of West-Berlin situated in the French sector. The airport was operational between 1948 and late 2020. The code doesn't exist anymore today as the airport is closed and decommissioned, replaced by the brand-new EDDB Berlin-Brandenburg (named after Willy Brandt) International Airport south of Berlin.

The suggestions about telling aircraft to contact departure with the takeoff clearance are most likely from Europe. That's how they do it there. Only military tactical jets do that in the US.

Nice vid! Like it! Two more (fun) facts on EDDF: Agreeing with @Martin Barry, the reverse direction of RWY 18, RWY 36, does not exist (you simply won't find it on any chart!): There is no legal ground for that runway (direction). That is because departures or go-arounds on RWY 36 would lead exactly over downtown Frankfurt/Main, which is located straight and close to the north of EDDF. And Frankfurt/Main has a lot of high bank sky scrapers there :-P (ideal to crash into with one-engine-out situation on departure). For the very same reason, RWY 18 must only be used for departures and never for arrivals. RWY 25R is also forbidden for large planes, i.e. no A380, B747 or MD-11 there (see also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Airport#Runways). Main reason appears to me that its length is 2800m (~9240 ft) only. That is also why RWY 25R is mainly only used "in addition". "Main runway" for landing at EDDF is RWY 25L (prevailing wind direction is west to south-west). In that sense, the configuration you have played is rather unusual: You would have the arrivals primarily on RWY 25L, and only "overflow" (e.g. side-step) the smaller planes to RWY 25R, in case too much traffic's coming in. BTW: planes landing on RWY 25L, heading over to terminal 1 (that's in the north where most of the common gates are) are often crossing RWY 25C and are not taking the long route via M and T.

Actually in Germany, you switch to the departure controller by yourself. There are only 4 Airports (EDDF, EDDM, EDDP, EDDB) where you get handed over by the tower ATC.
@christianmorl67083 жыл бұрын
As a passenger you hate landing at 25R, because it means at least 10 minutes of taxi time... especially after a 40 minute flight. ;-) #DUS --> #FRA

Flying to frankfurt from Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Nürnberg or Köln-Bonn should be a crime. The ICE is actually quicker, even flying to Paris takes almost the same amount of time as using the train. (HAM, MUC, BER I can understand since the train connections are not that good.)

Actually in Germany it's common to have an automatic changeover to departure, usually at 2000', so such a strategy wouldn't have been entirely unrealistic, though it is a charted instruction rather than a verbal one.
@laulpoecken3 жыл бұрын
thats the case at most airports, but EDDF is an exception. Due to the complex runway / SID layout you stay with tower until a verbal handoff

One thing, you cleared aircraft to land before the one in front had landed. You shouldn’t clear landing unless the runway is clear and they’re number one. (This may just be a European thing) - also, you don’t say to the ramp. You’d request an individual stand. May again be a European thing
@NoDakExpress2 жыл бұрын
both must be european things based on my experience here in the US. But it has been a while since I last controlled traffic - so maybe the rules have changed! Thanks for watchin!

I can understand why you only set your timer for an hour. Have you ever tried St Thomas, from 9am-10am? I want to see how you would handle a 3x stop and go with other multiple aircraft in the circuit, with a mixture of aircraft types. It's quite a mess, and having them hold in a pattern you still get that odd -500 penalty for aircraft being too close. I have yet to see anyone who plays this game come up with a viable solution.
