Commercially/professionally it’s not used much if at all in the west afaik. If this is in an Asian country it could be different. Old style suits are still made by certain companies but it’s mainly for a niche history buff corner of the diving hobby. Visibility is bad and the weights make it laborious compared to modern helmet diving, but I want to try it at least once

Brings back fond memories of my early days diving salvage with my father. You missed out quite a few 'tricks' but I guess the video can only be so long. We wore thick woollens under the suit to help maintain body temperature as the water would leech all our warmth. The air supply pumps were still manual hand pumps, 1 pump per diver, 4 men per pump. To call us up for lunch the hot aromatic food was held near the air intake, the food smell would have us at the surface in no time. Similarly, the men turning the pump handles were rotated regularly as their sweaty B.O. would also be pumped down to us. I hope you were briefed never to bend over as your suit was not laced to your body, but you were not deep enough for it to be life-threatening. Your air exhaust is at the top so if you bend over your exhaust moves to the bottom and your suit inflates and you surface fast, feet first. Lethal if you are at depth. Always check your suit for residents before you get dressed, nothing worse than having a cockroach or mouse appear in your helmet when you are under. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Sea Trek has a much nicer modern version that still uses the same concept. The helmet still weighs 70 pounds, but underwater it feels like 15 pounds.

Pearl divers across southeast asia use diving suits like this to this day. Theres really nothing wrong with it as long as its maintained and surface air delivery has become a lot more advanced these days. Its safer and more efficient than freediving, and much cheaper than a SCUBA system

@@VoorTrekker88 these suits are usually used with modern surface hookahs, or boat based pumps for less well off divers. Thats why I said surface air delivery has gotten better these days. And note I said its safer than free diving the80-100 feet it sometimes takes to reach pearl beds, not that its safer than totally modern setups. Theyre still used because theyre much more straightforward to fix in rural areas with very little money as compared to modern regulators, masks etc.
